Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) over Adirondack High Peaks 10/16/24 and Lake George 10/19/24
Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) settling into the western sky over the snow covered Adirondack High Peaks on Wed. Oct 16, 2024, and then again over the Bolton Landing are of Lake George on Sat. Oct. 19, 2024. The nearly full moon was shining brightly on the 16th, lighting up the snow covered peaks, fall foliage, and clouds rolling over the mountains. On the 19th there was a nice dark sky after sunset, with the just past full moon rising about an hour after sunset, lighting up the lake and mountains. The comet was easily visible by eye on the 16th, and just barely visible by eye on the 19th, but was captured quite nicely by my Nikon Z6II and 24-120 f/4 lens.

Oct. 2024 Adirondack Northern Lights Week, Auroras on Oct. 8, 10, 11 w/ Mountain Air by Dan Berggren
Переглядів 3432 місяці тому
The week of October 7th, 2024 was a week to remember in northern lights history, with several KP 5, 6, 7, and 8 bursts that lit up the northern (and southern) skies around the world during two full nights of auroras. I photographed several time lapse sequences from locations in the SE and central Adirondacks. The first was from a wild beaver pond in the Bolton Landing / Brant Lake area on Oct. ...
Aug 12, 2024 KP7 Aurora & Perseid Meteors over Brant Lake in the Adirondacks of Upstate New York
Переглядів 2584 місяці тому
We had a KP7 aurora during the peak of the Perseid meteor shower during the early morning hours of Aug. 12, 2024. There was a mix of clouds and clear skies during the 3 hour and 20 minute long time lapse shoot, but there were some really nice northern lights during the time period I photographed. Every now and then you'll notice the streak of a shooting star, along with an otter that shows up i...
May 10-11, 2024 KP9 (G5) Northern Lights & Clouds Dance over Brant Lake, NY in the SE Adirondacks
Переглядів 4347 місяців тому
From May 8-11, 2024, a huge array of sunspots rotating around the sun blasted several successive X level solar flares directly toward Earth, resulting in a continuous KP8-9 (G4-5) solar storm that lasted close to 24 hours on May 10 and 11. It started here around 3 PM EDT Friday the 10th and lasted through noon or so on Saturday. After checking the short-term aurora forecast on the evening of Ma...
Shades of Totality during The Great North American Solar Eclipse
Переглядів 8308 місяців тому
I've been so fortunate to have experienced the 'once in a lifetime' experience of totality during a solar eclipse twice - once in 2017, and again in 2024. No words can describe the scene, and no photos truly capture the stunning sight we see during the few short moments of totality. I photographed a time lapse of totality with a 17 mm focal length on a Nikon D750. I was intrigued with seeing th...
Geminid Meteors and Aurora over Brant Lake 12/14/23

This time lapse video clip covers about 2 1/2 hours of beautiful clear nighttime shooting during the peak of the 2023 Geminid meteor shower in the early morning hours of Thursday December 14. The clip starts about 1:30 AM and continues to around 4 AM. A subtle aurora was active at the time adding color along the horizon as well as some shifting shafts of northern lights. Note the meteors appear...
April 3, 2023 Clouds and Sunrise Colors over the Bolton Landing Area of Lake George, NY

The winds were calm, and clouds were moving in ahead of a storm when I set up my camera along the shore of Lake George, NY to capture a time lapse sequence. This view, from just south of Bolton Landing, looks NE to Dome Island and the Narrows between the Tongue Mountain range on the left, and Black Mountain and the Shelving Rock area to the right of Dome Island. This 42 second clip contains 50 ...

The 3/23/23 forecast was for G1 and G2 geomagnetic storms for the evening. I checked around 8:30 PM and saw the clouds had opened up and there was an aurora glow across the northern sky. I grabbed my cameras and headed down to the Brant Lake shoreline and set up one camera for a time lapse shoot that lasted from about 8:50 to 11:50 PM. The most intense part of the display was from 10:50 to 11:2...

Seeing a bright display of the northern lights in person is a simply amazing experience. The aurora reached a KP7 level in the early morning hours of Feb 27, 2023. The camera picked up a wide range of color tones as the varying lights shafts moved across the horizon from 4:09 AM to 5:26 AM when dawn light began to drown out the aurora. Blending the exposures creates a mesmerizing time lapse cli...
Otter Cliff Sunrise, Acadia NP 6/14/2022

On Tuesday morning of my 2022 5 day Acadia NP photo workshop, I set up a camera to do a time lapse sequence looking out over the ocean from a viewpoint on Otter Cliff. I love watching the mist dance around in the early morning light, as a photographer (guess who!!) photobombs the time lapse at one point, and a lobster boat comes in on its daily rounds at the end of this hour long time lapse seq...

Brant Lake Ring of Fire 9/4/2021

On Sept.4, 2021, the Brant Lake Association suggested that in lieu of an end of the year party cancelled because of covid, that everyone build a campfire in the evening. I was asked if I might capture the event in a photo. I didn't see many campfires, but the combo of house, boat, and car lights made for a good photo, and this time lapse captures the essence of the evening with some nice soft s...

The music for this program was a collaborative effort by Adirondack folk musicians, Dan Berggren, Dan Duggan, and Peggy Lynn, and composer / musician Casey Filiaci, who also or...

Scattered among the northern lights and stars, are a few small meteors, a few jet planes and satellites, including one that flared brightly during one of the individual 20 second exposure...

Too much private land ownership in the Adirondacks. The entire park is under ownership of some form! Should be declared a National Park! Not sure that would make difference but the current arrangement worries me! Nothing but a big money grab! Let the arguments begin!!

Richard Farmer it’s getting like that all around.... I don’t mind paying to get in or paying a little each night I stay because that pays to keep things in good working order like roads and cabins and such. BUT all over NY, lakes and other great places to fish and hunt and camp are now being owned and controlled but not only the state but regular civilian ownership which then they either charge an arm and a leg OR they ban any recreation.... I grew up hunting and fishing for food on my table and would love to teach my newborn son one day but I cannot. In all honesty, it is all about the money and now people know they can make a few bucks letting someone fish hunt or camp so they’re going to do it.

I know your post is from 4 years ago, but the question of nationalizing the Adirondacks is still a relevant question. Personally, I wouldn't trust the federal law with squat. They tend to ruin everything they touch lately. However, Albany can mess things up without trying. It's is up to the local residents of the Adirondack region to make sure that the Adirondacks are preserved the way they are so future generations can experience the beauty and charm that is like no other. Growing up in the area, I have memories that I will always cherish.

@@flyonwall360 Yeah, well that isn't working either and I'll site the local from the Long Lake area who, out of spite, introduced bass into Little Tupper Lake because when ownership transferred from the Whitneys to the state he wanted motorized craft allowed and the state wanted to keep it as pristine as possible. One man's act, a native Adirondacker mind you, wiped out a heritage native brook trout strain from the biggest and one of the best trout waters in the 'Dacks.
