🧙 Books by popular fantasy authors | reading vlog [CONTAINS SPOILERS]
⚠️ This vlog contains spoilers! I will be talking generally about the world, character backstories and parts of the plot that I don't consider to be major spoilers throughout, and I will mark major spoilers clearly, but if you don't want any spoilers, please do not watch this! ⚠️
Welcome to my first reading vlog! In this vlog I picked three books by three very popular fantasy authors that I hadn't read from before to see how I liked them. There were good parts and bad parts, and I had a lot of thoughts, but I ultimately did enjoy all of these to some degree.

🌏 Around the World Book Tour - An Introduction
I enjoyed the video and your thoughts. Happy New Year!
Thank you so much! Happy New Year’s! 🎆
I agree with most of your point you made in this video. I would add there is a parallel between what happening with the publishing industry and what happened to the comic book fad of the 90s before the big crash right after. Special editions and collectible issues were the big thing and people got sick of it. Readers were pushed out in favor of the "investors" who thought buying these limited runs were going to make them money down the road. Then the bottom fell out. In a time when the average American (as this is the frame of reference I have) is reading less books, do the publishers really want to overstay their welcome with these special editions when people start getting tired of subpar books that look pretty and nothing else? In my eyes, a special edition should come after you sell a couple million copies of your first few print runs. When everything is special, nothing is.
That's really interesting. I didn't know about the analogous situation with comic books. I think special editions are just becoming part of the marketing for books, the same way sometimes a pretty cover catches your eye, now it might also be sprayed edges. And to some degree the fact that they're so common makes it easier to say no because its no longer a marker of a popular and well-loved book but just a choice that someone at the publishing house made in an effort to sell more books. That being said, the FOMO is real, and I wish retailers would concentrate on doing more special editions of backlist titles rather than new releases like you said. There are so many "older" books I read this year that I loved, and I'd love to have the option to get a special edition at a not ridiculous price. I don't even care whether it's limited, I'm just shallow enough to enjoy the fact that I have a pretty copy of a book that I love 😂
Cat's idea was super awesome! I'm fairly new to the terminology of neurodiversity, so I love hearing more books representing that and I'm taking notes since I want to expand my knowledge! I didn't participate because I was a bit unfamiliar but now I have a lot of recs from yourself & others who did this 🥰 Sedated is actually really relate-able. How am I always able to get so many different recommendations from you?? Because that's 100% true, and it's something I went through, and had to break myself from old workplace. I was in a lucky enough place to be able to stop working without anything to fall back on, and I do notice that there was a huge correlation between my mental health & the toxic work place once I took a step back and left. You were SO close, and I love it!
Thank you so much for this comment! You always have such nice things to say ❤️ I got a lot of good recommendations out of this from everyone else who participated as well, so it's exciting to have even more books to read 😄 I also saw a lot of my own experience in Sedated. I've had to take breaks from work and change roles because I recognised the job was causing me mental health issues, and luckily my managers and workplace were actually supportive of that, and things changed for the better. Which just shows how addressing the obvious problem is more valuable than trying to make individual mental health the culprit, and I wish we had systems that better supported that on a wider societal level.
@@TheKatBite Of course!! Always love your videos & the recs because I'm always trying to expand my reading range 🥰 I honestly wouldn't even know where to start so having a guided recommendation like this is so helpful!! YES! I really wish managers or management take courses or even read some books such as Sedated to get a better knowledge on how to maintain their workforce. Unfortunately for me, I'm on the opposite spectrum when I spoke out about it, they kind of just brushed it off 🥴and then I was like, OK, bet, I quit 😅
These sounds like amazing reads! Have a wonderful holiday season 😊
Thanks very much! You, too! ❤️
If you think mental health is better under socialism I’d suggest you speak with a Venezuelan.
I think, like many things, it's probably less about the specific ideology and more about the economic and social conditions and the distribution of power in any given place.
Happy Holidays! I agree with you about mental health and autism. Those topics need to be discussed and out in the open.
Happy holidays to you as well! Absolutely! That's why I loved this reading challenge for surfacing a lot of those topics in my reading 😊
Not me getting this video recommended under ''Everybody wants to rule the world cover in Classical Latin (SOFTBARDCORE)'' This may be a sign
Interesting... 🤔
You did so well on the challenge. I feel "Bodies" could potentially be ticked off with Sedated and/or Untypical, but in any case, you ticked off so many prompts and I'm so glad you found reads you really enjoyed. Sedated sounds like it might have interesting crossovers with Empire of Normality, which talks about how capitalism is ultimately what led to this idea of a "normal mind" and hence impacting neurodivergent people in not so great way ^^' Thanks so much for participating in the event! I'll definitely host it again in 2025, it was so much fun :)
I had such a great time with this, and I'm looking forward to next year! ❤️ I will definitely add Empire of Normality to my TBR 👀 It sounds right up my alley because I've been thinking a lot about the term "neurotypical" lately. Typical by what measure? Says who? Is there a bell curve? This challenge has definitely made me want to read more about neurodiversity and put a lot of great books on my radar.
@@TheKatBitethat’s so great! That was exactly the goal of the event so I’m really pleased 😊
You did great on this event! Sedated sounds great and infuriating! Is there a call to action in it or is it just stating the facts of reality? Very interesting reads all of them.
I don't know if there's a specific call to action. Obviously being aware of the connection both in your personal life and in understanding what decision-makers are doing is really important. I think it's one of those things where shifting public mindset is key, but at the same time addressing the problems is a very complex operation 😔
@ Absolutely! And in some cases, we might have the power to make changes for ourselves. That’s not the case for everyone of course, but just the sense of getting back some power can be empowering (duh), meaning not sitting around and waiting for the doctor to “cure you” when you can change job or location or whatever, if you know that’s a cause of stress. Validation is powerful too.
Ooooow, I'm soooo glad you found a new favorite thanks to the Neurovember event! It makes me so happy 🥰 Can't wait for your video about the nonfiction books you read for it as well!
It was a really great readathon! Thanks for putting it together ❤️
I didn't know there was a new release from Hazelwood. Might have to read it for this season even though I have a million and two books to read before the year end 😂 Genuinely... I may or may not have been sold for The Coven by you LOL. Sometimes I just want something little mindless 🤪 Can't wait to see what you read for Neuronovember! I didn't participate on it because I was in a reading slump & I wasn't too aware about what constitute neurodivergent but I can't wait to participate next year!
I didn’t know about Ali Hazelwood’s new release either. I just saw it on her Instagram and immediately downloaded it 😂 I hope you like the Coven more than I did if you do pick it up. I often don’t mind something a little mindless, but for me it bordered on sloppy. On the other hand I did read the second one, so I’m not sure what that says about me 🤔😅
@@TheKatBite It's so short so it might be a nice palette cleanser after I finish The Poppy War 😂 I hope so too! Honestly, sometimes we just want the story to get better and it's 50/50 if that'll actually happen
Loved hearing about all these!!
Thanks! I'm glad to hear that ❤️
What a great video! You’re very eloquent, definitely adding some of these to my TBR 🙏🏼
Thanks so much! I'm glad you found something interesting 😊
I haven’t heard of most of these!! So many beautiful covers!
I hope you saw something interesting 😊
Ooh I love hearing about these books. I have only read one of these so far (Invisible Women) but Evicted sounds really good and important. Adding that to my TBR!
I'm glad you got a good recommendation! 😊
I haven’t read this book yet but it was recommended to me by a friend the subject matter is very interesting and important “Sexy But Psycho” by Jessica Taylor. Basically about how patriarchy monopolises women’s trauma against them.
I have that on my shelf! I haven't read it yet, but I'm looking forward to it. Glad to know others have also enjoyed it 😊
This is such a fantastic video! The Value of Everything is going on my TBR. I also loved Evicted and Invisible Women. You are so good at analyzing these books. Thanks for tagging me in it 😊
Thanks very much! And thanks so much for being the inspiration for this idea ❤️
How do you come out with book after book recommendations that are so amazing to help me broaden my knowledge? You already know I'm interested in Invisible Women, but I'm now interested in The Value of Everything & The Tyranny of Merits the most from this list. Just from the synopsis of all the books as you go through it, it's already giving me a bit more to think about.
Thank you so much! That's kind of my goal. I'm hoping that everyone who comes across the video comes away with at least something to think about even if they can't/don't pick up the books ❤️
I remember hearing about Evicted some time ago but I forgot about it, but now it is back on my TBR. Invisble women sounds like a book I should read! Great video :)
Both great reads. I hope you enjoy them 😄
So many interesting books. Great video. Thanks.
Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it 😊
Invisible Women is such a good read but also so frustrating and maddening. All About Love is on my 40 Before 40 list and I'm really looking forward to getting to it. The Cost of Sexism sounds really good! Thanks for all the recommendations.
Yeah, Invisible Women was incredibly impactful. I think it was my gateway book to a lot of non-fiction books centring women.
I've been loving fantasy books -- especially ones that make me kick and laugh. I'll be adding Sorcery and Small Magics to my TBR! This is the first time I've seen your edition for A Fate Inked in Blood. Your copy is GORGEOUS 😍 I haven't read it even though it's been on my TBR for so long -- I was supposed to read it with Cat but my life went all over the place 😂 I definitely thought that Bride was going to be on the list because at the beginning of the video, I kept eyeing your copies of Ali Haelwood books.
Sorcery and Small Magics is so good! Would obviously recommend any on this list, but I really loved that one, and I think it's a great cosy read especially at this time of year 🥰
I really love you going through all of these recs, and also into specific details as to which book has which points that stands out. From your list, the books that really stand out to be is The Right to S. (trying not to get sent to YT jail because that happens too much LOL) & Invisible Women. I love seeing the statistics, and data and how that would relate (or not) to us. I can definitely see how things were designed and tested mostly on men and as a result, females often get missed in safety features. I remember there's one data point I saw a long time ago, is that seat belt were designed with maximum safety for specific heights. The average women is about 1-2" shorter than the specific height safety! TLDR, data relating to how the world is probably inherently sexist is an interesting fact! Definitely WILL pick this book up. Also the way you articulate all of the synopsis of the book is amazing 😩🧡 I feel like I got such good ideas of all the books and what I can expect going into it
Thanks so much! I'm glad the video was useful. Yeah, Invisible Women is so eye-opening and infuriating 😠
Kat recommend me some books to read on the next year ☺️
Any of the books I mentioned in this video!
@TheKatBite ☺️
The only one I've read in here is A Fate Inked in Blood. I agree with you that is was very predictable, but I (mostly) enjoyed in nonetheless and I'll be curious to pick up the next book! I really want to read The night ends with fire too, it sounds so good!
The Night Ends with Fire is great! Would definitely recommend, especially if you're a fan of Mulan 🐉
Hi Kat! I tagged you to do 'The Book Murder Tag,' if you are interested in doing it. It was created by Noah at The Book Wyrm. The video is on my channel now. Great video by the way.😺
Thanks very much for tagging me! I'll check it out 👀
Thanks for the recs! I've added a few of these to my holds list at the library.
That's great to hear! I hope you enjoy them 😊
A few of my fav feminist fiction books Historical -The Mercies by Kiran Millwood Hargrave -Snowflowet and the Secret Fan by Lisa See Dystopia -The Core of the Sun by Johanna Sinisalo Fantasy -Tender Morsels by Margo Lanagan (check TWs) -She Would be King by Wayétu Moore I have read "A Vidication of the Rights of Women" by Mary Wolstonecraft Shelley, and we still have the same problems she discussed in 1794. Things have changed and some of it no longer applies, but a lot of it higlights the same repackaged sytemic issues. "Witchcraft" by Marion Gibson and "The Barbazon: the hotel that set women free" by Paulina Bren are my next two nonfics.
Thanks very much for the recommendations! Looks like a lot of interesting books there 👀❤️
I read Invisible Women a few years ago and it was really important! Great list!
Thanks very much! ❤️
All those books sound so interesting. Invisible Women have been on my radar for a while, but I have a few feminist books on my bookshelves already that I should get to first ^^' I haven't read her latest works, but Mona Chollet is a brilliant author too - I think most of her books have been translated into English, in case you want to check her books out.
Ooh! Thanks for the recommendation! I'll look her up! ❤️
What a bummer about The Gods Below! I also feel like it sounded really good. The Familiar and Funs of the Dawn are on my list of books to read! So glad you enjoyed them!
Yeah, The Gods Below was a disappointment. I've now seen reviews from other people who finished it, and didn't feel there was a payoff at the end, so I'm glad I made the decision to DNF. Would 100% recommend the Familiar and Guns of the Dawn (obviously 😄)
all about love sounds really interesting. I've had Invisible Women on my want to read for a while and just hearing you talk about it makes me so mad, even though I already knew some of it. The medicine and hormones aspect 🤯 I always feel like it's such an "inconvience" to have to make adjustments for women, as if they aren't half of the population and should have been considered in the first place. Just imagine if it were the other way around and men constantly had to fit into things that were designed for women. We had those really low kitchen counters where I grew up, since they were made for women... They were then heightened, so my dad wouldn't break his back cooking... which was good. It's just so odd. I've also read about the point that Linda Scott made, I think in a book called Poverty Dynamics, and it was talked about how poverty can be helped by "letting" women be in charge of the household finances, on a small and large scale. And yes, a money argument is always good to have up your sleeve, when nothing else seems to stick! When is "Difficult Men" coming out? 🤔
Yeah, Invisible Women was so eye opening, but at the same time there are so many parts where I was like "oh, now I understand why I've felt this way before." 🙄 Linda Scott's book was really interesting, and in addition to seeing how women spent money it was also enlightening to see how men spent money, which was not so generous . . . However, I do wonder how much of this is due to socialisation, so it would be interesting to see similar research that tries to control for that. The insights are still valuable in that you're connecting gendered behaviour to outcomes, but it probably goes deeper than just "women are better than men at these things", which is perhaps a bit reductionist. "Difficult Men" is just called "history" and I don't think people always shy away from the ways in which men of history were horrible, but it seems we're much more willing to celebrate and make excuses for them 😐
@@TheKatBite Exactly. Yes, I think so too. I think that whoever is home to see the children hungry everyday while the other one is away caring about themselves is going to be a bit more group-oriented. Yes, completely agree. I also think it has to do with expectations and betrayal of trust. I've been thinking about it in other cases lately. Kind of like how you would expect crimes from a criminal, but when it's a police officer, it seems so much worse.
Definitely agree about the expectations. It's like antiheroes in media. If they do something bad, we expect it, and it's less egregious than if a regular hero does something bad.
Guns of the Dawn was a really fun read! I am hoping to get to some of his other works in 2025!
Glad you liked it as well. I think it's definitely a new favourite for me 😊
And by the way, congrats on hitting 100 subs!!! 🥳
Thank you! ❤️
I just couldn't, with Long Live Evil... I had to DNF it even though I was really excited about the premise. Now I want to know how it ends! Can you share in a comment (with spoiler warnings)??? No way I'll pick it up again, it made me cringe so hard I would hurt my jaws 😅
There was so much cringing going on in that book, I don't blame you 🤣 I swear if Rae had just acted like a normal human, this book would have been an easy five star for me. **Spoiler Warning for Long Live Evil** I can't remember the exact circumstances that lead to this, but the guard/assassin character, Key, gets sentenced to a fatal punishment by the king, which I think he maybe takes on Rae's behalf. In doing so, he's killed in front of Rae and gets tossed in the abyss. This prompts one of the first genuine emotional reactions I think we see from Rae. For some other reason (again, a bit fuzzy here) the king goes down into the abyss to become the emperor and fulfil the destiny Rae knows he's going to have. There's a big attack on the castle as monsters crawl out of the abyss, and Rae ends up in the throne room trying to not die. We then get to see the first scene we got in the book that was an excerpt from the Time of Iron series (but now it's happening "for real") where the emperor marches into the throne room, having just crawled out of the abyss holding the head of his enemy. Only the emperor is not the king, it's Key. My edition also had some bonus content "letters from the abyss" from Key to Rae, and I think that was part of what hooked me in for the next one 🙈 There's something about a pining hero that always gets me. I had the same problem with When the Moon Hatched, which also had some major problems, but the pining hero kept me reading 😅
@@TheKatBite Ah, that sounds like a good twist indeed ^^ Thanks for sharing!
I’m looking forward to reading Guns of the Dawn in 2025. I heard about it from Library of Allenxandria a while ago and Instead of reading it I hoarded it for later 😂 I’m so glad to see another person who is a fan for a reminder to make it a priority to read instead of hoard. I’d recommend Ogres by Adrian Tchaikovsky. It’s a novella written in 2nd person and I found it to be compelling and philosophical especially in context of power over others. Dogs of War has been highly recommended to me so that will also be another Tchaikovsky priority for 2025. Thanks for the great reviews!
Thanks so much for the recommendations! Would definitely recommend Guns of the Dawn for your 2025 TBR 👍
@@TheKatBite you’re welcome and I’m looking forward to it. May your next Tchaikovsky be a winner too!
You have so many gorgeous editions 😍 I also love that swirling sky painting on your wall. I kinda want a proper room tour now 😂
Thanks very much! I have a weakness for special editions 🙈 and I’m really glad I have wall space to have art. The swirling sky is a local artist from my hometown obviously inspired by Starry Night 🌌
These all sound like documentaries I would watch! I haven’t read these kinds of nonfiction books for other than uni, but the topics all sound very interesting. It always baffles me how much money and wealth there is in the world, when so many have so little. Depressing yes. But worthwhile to learn more about. Happy reading 🥴🙃
Yeah, it's insane and depressing and fascinating all at once 🥲
So many interesting picks in there! Always love to hear what kind of non fiction other people read 😊
Me too! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm currently reading one of the ones I picked up (Sedated) for Neurovember!
loved your video!! ❤ tip: go to settings > select camera > composition section > level then it’s gonna appear a horizontal line on your camera to make sure it’s leveled 😊
Thanks very much! I'll keep that in mind next time I film outside of my usual setup 😊
Your new shelves are too good❤❤. I don't have a book shelf or many books right now but I'm manifesting to make it one day.
Thanks! I’m hoping you get your dream shelves one day as well! ❤️
@@TheKatBite thank you so much 💕✨
I love watching these types of videos myself. Would your husband consider doing a video with you talking about books?
Agreed! It’s always interesting to get a look on what’s on people’s shelves! I doubt my husband would ever want to come on camera. He’s not a very online person, and I respect that ❤️
Evicted is so good! I love non fiction, thanks for the inspiration!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I read Evicted when it first came out and it still - to this day- sits proudly on my top shelf and is one of my absolute all time favorites. It was very eye opening and taught me so much. Love it!
Absolutely! I’m looking forward to reading his more recent release as well. I imagine it will be just as eye-opening (and depressing).
@ oh! You just reminded me to research and put that on my tbr list. Thank you😃 and thank you for the video.
Evicted sounds like a read I need! Adding to my future reading. Thanks for talking about it!
Would definitely recommend!
Evicted was such a good book! I read it a few years ago and it was so influential in how I see housing. Elite Capture is going on my TBR right now. I'm reading Some People Need Killing right now and I can already tell it will be one of my favorite books. Really important reading!
[Apologies if this is a duplicate, but I think YT may have censored my first response because of the book title 😂] SPNK is also on my TBR. I’m looking forward to hearing what you think of it when you’re finished.
Excellent video. Loved your reviews. Very clear and detailed. Thanks.
Glad you liked them! ❤️
That was such an interesting video! I'd love for you to cover the celebrity side (musicians, writers, etc) of the topic too in another video. On the social movement/advocacy front, I've seen toxic behaviors in non-profits being basically covered up or volunteers exposed to such behaviors being told not to say anything about it or just not daring to speak up because it would "hurt the cause", which was a legitimate concern (but still terrible when it was used to keep people silent). I don't have anything smart or useful to say about it, I'm afraid ^^' I've just been struggling with that dilemma. There is also something even more shocking when people who publicly fight for a good cause also behave in terrible ways on other fronts - it's hard to reconcile, even if you acknowledge that everyone is flawed - there just are different levels of flawed! Don't meet your heroes, they say...
Yeah, absolutely agree with everything you've said. I think it's really hard when someone's job or image is associated with something morally good when they themselves are not are not exemplars of those or other related morals. I think to some degree people hate hypocrites more than unapologetically bad people. The lie or the perception of a lie adds insult to injury especially when it feels like admiring that person was part of your own identity.
I really liked Beach Read! It was the first contemporary romance I read and really made me realize that there can be well written romance books with deep themes and character development. I loved Beach Read and Funny Story by the same author.
That's definitely how I felt about it, too! It felt serious but in a way that was still accessible and familiar enough to feel like a romance. I'm looking forward to picking up more books by Emily Henry in the future 😊
