I love everything about this video. A beautiful print that you pulled and a beautiful connection between a human and her dog. You guys are so in tune with one another. I love that. I have six dogs and the little scene at the beginning of your video reminds me so much of my own life with them. Thank you for sharing all of this. 💜
@@amyclolinger-obryant2256 thank you, Amy! Reading this before Charlie and I head out for a walk. 😍🐾🐾 Dogs are the best! 💗💗
How would you suggest to varnish a print that you want to frame? Do you use an acrylic clear medium paint or spray? I found your videos to be very organized and easy to follow and also inspiring!
@@rwws1387 hello! And thanks for the kind comment. That means a lot! I used to teach public school art and this has been a fun way to keep teaching. 😍 I use spray varnish on paper because it’s just so much faster and easier. I especially like the Krylon UV Archival version in Satin. But you can do any finish you prefer. Link is in my Amazon shop under “Gel Plate Supplies” 💗💗
fantastic papers and lots of great ideas! (much prefer hearing artists' thoughts on their process. i immediately mute any music ;) thank you!!
Thanks so much! I like hearing an artist talk as well. 💗💗💗
Just bought my first gelliplate today. Thank you for all the good info. What about using ink on stamps to stamp onto the paint? Have you tried that? Wondering if the ink stays to be able to be pulled up with the paint.
@@guerita219 hello! I’m glad this video is helpful to you! So, I’m not completely sure what will happen bc I haven’t tried that exact thing. But if you use a stamp on wet paint, it will pull up some of the paint - leaving paint on the stamp and showing that stamp pattern on the plate. If you put paint on the plate and let it dry, then try to stamp ink on that layer of paint, I’m not sure if you’ll see the ink. That would depend on the opacity of the paint layer. I would also test out the ink on the plate and check for staining - if that worries you at all. The important thing is to experiment and have fun! 🤩
Fantastic! Can't wait to try all these! Hi from Melbourne, Australia.
@@shonarosemarybaker9211 Hi! So glad you enjoyed the video. 💗 And, I love Melbourne! Thanks for your comment. 💗💗
Hi aunt Jen! Just hit 3K subs!
@@Baseballboi222 AWESOME!!!! I recently hit 5k and that means you’ll probably pass me soon! I better get to work! Haha
@@jennifertobinart yup!
Excellent video, again! I tend to layer on paper as I can grasp the concept of that! I am trying to layer on plate more but am definitely overthinking it - and got excited about colour without thinking about its opacity!! Thanks for this ❤🎉❤
Really helpful video! Thank you 🎉🎉 i love how some of the blobs of rolled out paint bear a vague resemblance to a human form 🩶🖤🤍💛
@@laurabenns thanks for your comments. 💗💗💗 I noticed those figure shapes as well!
18:17 OMG!! ❤❤❤ Also: 19:45 my absolute favourite kind of pull. Love you and the gel plate!! I will have to watch this a few more times and then try and print along with you! Thank you so much 🎉🎉 🤎🖤🩶🤍
@@laurabenns ahhh yes! That is a great pull! I love printing too! 😍😍😍
Hi, these are soo gorgeous! It helped me understand masks better. I loved the very first ones when you were "cleaning" the plate 1:53 I love the "old wall" look, if you can show/work out how to get that effect consistently, id love it 🙃😉 thank you 🎉🎉
@@laurabenns hello, Laura! Thanks for the video ideas. I will make note of that. 💗
They appear to dry quite quickly after applying to the paper....maybe why they don't blend that well ?
@@kathyb5740 that’s exactly right!
Marvellous, thank you 💚💛🤍
@@laurabenns you’re welcome! Glad you enjoyed this video. 💚💚
How do you avoid the tape in the corner from appearing in your prints?
@@debrajackson-jones8849 Hi Debra, I’ve never had the tape show up in my prints. It is holding the paper down to the table & hasn’t left an impression. Hope that helps! 💗
My favourite format is pretty much how you did this one. Useful bits real time, other bits sped up, with your thinking over the top or music if you don't have much that you want to say.
That’s exactly what I prefer! Thanks for commenting. 💗
Wow! That final print is super luscious 🎉! Thanks!
@@janemcgregor5921 thank you! 😊
Super Insights, thanks for this video 😊
@@kristin.1124 you’re welcome! ☺️
could you use some of the modelin g paste to blend the colors?
Love everybit of this!! Thank you 🎉🎉❤
@@laurabenns thanks for your kind comment. 💖💖💖
I would like to know how to use the brayer in a way that doesnt make hard lines into the paint on tge gelplate.
@@carolineharnish5633 play around with different paints and different pressure with your brayer. Sometimes it just doesn’t work and will make lines. 🥰🥰
Love the journal on the side!!
@@nabbyr8112 I’m slowly filling it up and I love it!! 🥰 Thanks for commenting. 💕
Thanks for the terrific video! Lovely little piece! 'd love the name of your UV protectant varnish!
I think my favorite piece had the leaf prints on the gold background with the red from the sticks. That and some of the other prints would be beautiful if framed. I thought that was good use of a negative print with the hand pressed leaf impressions showing through. I will definitely be trying a similar version of the two prints described above. I also want to try some grasses. Excellent video. Thank you1
@@juliebooton1360 thanks for your comment, Julie! I hope you have fun making your own botanical prints. 🥰
do they dry out if the lid is left off?
@@susanbarackman-artist7670 I’m actually not sure, because I haven’t done that 🥰
What varnish is it please? Are the ear rings double sided?
@@deborahlongmore2522 hello! I use spray varnish or liquid varnish (Liquitex). The sheen comes down to personal preference. And yes, all of my earrings are double sided and you see both sides while wearing them. I teach allllll the details in my online course: www.jennifertobinart.com/courses 💖💖
Are you on a 12x14? What kind of paper do you use? im new to it and my Rice paper won’t work (9x12) or My deli paper isn’t large enough! Thanks for sharing Your work!🏆🌺💙
@@nitawray1125 hello! Yes, this is a 12x14” plate, but I often use smaller. I use a variety of paper depending on the project. Here is a video I made for beginners where I include lots of info. I hope it helps! ua-cam.com/video/Hm52jjEUp4E/v-deo.htmlsi=xINNTAiajBpBvkra

The leaves! The grass. The LEAVES! Oh….the GRASS! Captivating ❤ and love your commentary!
@@joannc147 the grass is my favorite!! 🤩 Thanks for your kind comments. 💖💖
That was fun! Ok, now I need to get a gel plate! 🤣❤
@@joannc147 yes!!! Come join the fun! I have links to supplies in my video descriptions if that’s helpful. 💖
I always respect the artist more when they show what they believe is a failure. You have to show the good and the bad. Kudos!
@@kristinaandthegerman4554 thanks for your support! It’s all an important part of the process. 😍
Brilliant! You made me subscribe because you stated about the brayer and what shapes it makes when spreading painting.
@@Karibee61 thanks for subscribing! 💖
Love your work, and this is so well explained! I'm rediscovering Gelli printing, and I'm so frustrated - I can't for the life of me figure out what I'm doing wrong this time. I just end up with a splotchy mess because it just doesn't pull up all the paint. Is it the paper? Is it the paint? I'm using Utrecht paint, making sure not to use too much or too little. I'm making sure to wait a full 5 minutes before pulling, and the plate is brand new. Argh. I'd love some advice because I used to be able to do this! Thanks for any help.
@@schubertkind hello! How have things been going for you? Any better? I don’t usually wait five minutes before pulling the paper back up. Sometimes that helps for different techniques, but it’s not required for each pull. Let me know if you’ve had any luck or still need help! 💗
My brayer is picking up all the paint off gelli plate!!😢
@@CynthiaHellner hard to tell why without seeing it. But you might be over rolling. Like if you roll too much and it starts to dry, it pulls up the paint!
I Reeeeeally wanted to know if the softest ones re better, i am thinking of buying a SILICONE brayer, but worried aboyt sticking issues and qud LOVE to know if anyone has used silicone brayers on gel plates???
I reach for my soft Speedball brayer constantly and LOVE it! I have a link to it in my video description so you can see exactly what I have. 💖💖 What brand is the silicone brayer you’re looking at? I want to look it up…
Love the grass prints!
They’re my favorite! I need to do more! Thanks for your comment. 💖
These are amazing! On the grass prints, how long did you let the paint dry before doing the pulls? Thanks for sharing your techniques.
Honestly, not very long! Just until I can touch the plate and I don’t have paint on my finger. You can zap with a hair dryer on cool setting to speed it up. Thanks for commenting and I’m glad you enjoyed the video! 💖
I’m impatient & like to keep the paint session moving. 😜 So I now usually work on 2 plates at once.
@@jennifertobinart Thanks for sharing the various paint colors you use. This was helpful in selecting a pallet that's complimentary to foliage.
@@clayfisher3194 you’re welcome!
Could you please tell me which paper youre using for the prints? It looks thin and nice
It’s actually packing paper that my movers used. 🫣 Not claiming it’s good quality or anything. But I had TONS of it and I do enjoy using it on my gel plate. 💖💖
Amazing my first time with the gel plate thankyou
You’re welcome. Have fun playing and experimenting! 💖
Better paint = better prints because good paint has more pigment. Have you tried Golden or better yet, since you like layers, Golden Open? I can’t help imagining your prints made with Golden.
I love Golden paints! So delicious!!! I think Opens are one of the few I still haven’t tried. I should prioritize that. 😍😍
Super! After painty leaves dry, but before they get crispy, i press them in books to use for a collage. Metallics are especially lovely.
Fabulous idea! Thank you. 💗
Thank you, finally someone told about which paper can be used ☺️🙏
Love that my videos are helpful. Thanks for commenting. 💗
I love the long grasses! I will try and subscribe..thank you.
Those are my favorite too. Thanks for following!
Hi! Thank you for the tutorial. I just got a gel plate and am looking forward to trying it. I was wondering if you are letting paint drying in the plate and layering on the plate, have you had issues of the paint layers not adhering to the paper or other item properly? Thank you
Hello! Yes I do a lot of layering! Depending on what I’m working on will depend on if I layer things on the plate (yes, letting dry between) or layer things on the paper. You’ll start to learn what you love the more you play! 🤩 I also have other videos where you can see how I pull things together and layer up, in case that helps you. Enjoy!

Cool!
I like your style.
Thank you! 💗💗
Although posted two years ago I enjoyed listening Into your studio tour. I connected to your comments about sewing and the sewing machine because it reminded me of amazing Australian Fibre artist Lorna Crane whose online workshop "Perfectly Imperfect" liberated me from my inner sewing critic ( be quiet Barbara is the best I've heard yet!) Lol😂). All the best I look forward to following your channel.
I’m so sorry I haven’t replied yet! I remember reading this the day you posted and being so glad you got a laugh about my inner critic mug! Thanks for sharing and I need to look up the fiber artist you mentioned!! I appreciate you taking the time to post such a thoughtful comment. 💖💖💖
Wash the gell plate before putting it away
This is very interesting. Have you videoed making picures for me to watch?
Hi Clare, I’m not exactly sure what you’re looking for when you say “making pictures.” But I have several other painting videos on my channel. Enjoy!
