- In this video I'm trying out tempera sticks for the first time. I'm using them in six different ways:
Color swatching
Color mixing with and without water
Mixing with modeling paste and then with a stencil
Using with a stencil and a baby wipe
Using them to draw a pear
Using them to add to a mixed media wood panel art piece.

The finished piece is SOOO nice.
Thank you! And it’s evolved a bit since then too! I added wax on top. You can see a pic on my Instagram if you’re interested. instagram.com/p/CZcwzysuIEK/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=
So fun watching you just play around. I picked up a random box of art supplies at a thrift store today and it had several of these tempera paint stick in there. I’ve literally never heard of them. I have heard of tempera paint but have never used it. So fun to think outa the box. Gotta love art 😂! And.. girl… put ur lid back on your paste 😂 no wonder it’s dry 😂! Great video! Learned a lot! Definitely subscribing
You could also try scribbling onto a slick surface like a glass media mat or non stick mat, adding water and then painting with it.
thank you!
I have a book like that. I find it very helpful.
I think it’s so great to have! 💕💕
I have my students use the neon colors and they blend really well! We do neon pink, yellow, and blue (more of the CMY primaries) and they blend really nicely to create secondaries. Thanks for the video:)
Ohhhh I will try that! Thanks for sharing! 💕 What age group do you teach?
@@jennifertobinart I teach Elementary (K-5) 😀
@@priscillahopkins2498 wonderful 😍 I taught K-5 art and High School art & ceramics. Sometimes I miss those littles. 💕
Super Insights, thanks for this video 😊
@@kristin.1124 you’re welcome! ☺️
I'm just starting out in mixed media and art journaling. Love you videos and thanks for inspiring me to create another piece
Happy to inspire, Mandi! Thanks for commenting. 💕💕💕
@@jennifertobinart your welcome. I look forward to your next videos to
Thanks for the terrific video! Lovely little piece! 'd love the name of your UV protectant varnish!
To get them to blend you need to gesso your paper then you can use stencils over them and a baby wipe through the stencil to take away the colour, I've used them for years the faber castell ones and cheaper ones
Good to know about the gesso! The stencil technique worked for me without gesso. But I’ll definitely try gesso first before trying to blend. Thanks!
Great video! I love the tempera on panel idea!
They glide nicely on panel! I enjoy it. 💗 Thank you for commenting.
fun stuff
Thank you!
I bet they’ll blend really well on sealed paper like over gesso or collage medium.
thanks, Marta!
And maybe rubbing them together with a finger before adding water.
Oops, she did that. Looks like it worked better than blending with water.
@@minnahumble2294 thanks for your input though! ☺️☺️
How do I not have molding paste in my arsenal of art supplies lol? I think I would love the texture it brings. Loved the pear and your swatch book. You've inspired me to play with my supplies more.
Molding paste is one of my top supplies!! I LOVE it!! Thanks so much & happy to inspire. 💕💕
Have you ever tried dropping in about three drops of water before you seal your medium or modelling paste jar? Since it’s water-based, I do that to keep them from getting very dry. But maybe I’m doing something that is not recommended. I don’t know.
I haven’t done that, I’ll have to look into it. Thanks!
Hi Jennifer I find when I want to use water It helps if I blend immediately after I lay down the color. These seem different than the gelatos the tempora doesn't seem as water soluble.
I definitely agree. With these I would have to act FAST if I wanted to blend! 💕💕
@@jennifertobinart So true I thought they would blend better. I even tried Gamsol that didn't work at all lol. I do like that they glide on smooth and silky. You really put the work in testing these out Thank you😊❣
@@lunakat7020 haha good to know about the gamsol. Thanks again for the feedback on my video. I’m glad this session of mine is helpful for people. 💕💕
Hi Jennifer, Happy Valentine’s Day! I’ve been thinking about you & wondering how you are? Then magically this video popped up! It was soooo fun to watch you create that little scene with the leaves! Leaves & trees are my favorite subjects, so that was really nice to see it become that from just random tempura marks. Is it for sale? I looked in your shop, but it was a long time ago, so probably it’s gone! Part of why I was attracted to it is because I watched you make it! That is very satisfying, for you, as well, I would guess! Do you do that often, actually paint in front of us? I didn’t mind that the music was playing & you weren’t talking too much. Then the spell was broken when you set the brush down in the turquoise paint! Too funny & you didn’t get upset, just added it to the edges of the frame! I love it! I moved things around & my desk is in front of a window now & it’s fabulous to have that light! It’s north-facing so it doesn’t get the really bright sun morning or afternoon. Your little plaque “create” (and the other side “breathe”!) is front & center! Hope you’re doing well, I’d love to watch you paint, or create, with whatever! Take care! Erica❤
Erica, hi! I think the other ironic thing is that I just posted a YT Short the day you messaged me and it’s me painting your art card!! I actually do still have this painting, but it is also now covered in a layer of encaustic wax. 😍😍 I have pictures of it on Instagram. Are you on IG or Facebook? I could message you pictures if you’d like. Or email, whatever is easier.
I’m happy to know that you enjoy watching me create and I appreciate you taking the time to check in with me! I MUST finish editing & post some more videos because I miss it and I do love the connections I’m making with others on YT. 💕💕💕
@@jennifertobinart oh wow! That’s really crazy!! I think it must be meant for me! I’m sorry I don’t have either Facebook or instagram, but if you could email that pic, I’d love to see it. I don’t know what encaustic wax is, so that will be a new surprise! The weather has been horrible for you, hope all is ok! I actually re-watched your clean studio, just to reacquaint myself with you! If I just get a little more done on my new space, I can send you some pics of that too! It was very nice of you to respond to me! Erica❤️
You’re so sweet! 💕 I sent you a private message on Etsy in order to get your email address.
We did have some yucky ice recently & that’s not fun for us! We don’t clear the roads as well as you guys do further north. 😉😉
Email sent! Let me know if you don’t get it for some reason. Thanks again, Erica! 💕💕
@@jennifertobinart I don’t think I’ve received new pics of it? We’re in the middle of a new ice storm & nobody saw it coming. There’s been no plowing or salt! My son works in Edgerton & never left Lawrence, cars every which way!
Do you ever put a few drops of water into modelling paste or gesso or medium that is getting dry? It helps but I don’t know if is something that’s not suggested.
Hi, Minna! 💕 I don’t actually think I’ve done that! Probably depends what you’re creating. If you’re selling your work and want to stand behind the longevity of your work, I probably wouldn’t advise it. If it’s less serious work or experimental, I’d say do whatever works for you!
could you use some of the modelin g paste to blend the colors?
Amazon carries The Crafter’s Workshop stencils. Although I don’t know if they have your specific ones.
Thank you!
Do you need to use a fixative with these? Do you know they work with acrylic paint and paint pens?
yes, I always use some type of varnish or fixative. :)
Cross hatch them on wood.As they layer theyre floppy and interesting.White is great over darks.
Genius! I need to do that because I prefer working on wood anyways!
Could you put up the name of the varnish that you used to seal your last image?
Sure… here is the link for you: Krylon K01378000 Gallery Series UV Archival Varnish Aerosol Spray, Matte, 11 Ounce www.amazon.com/dp/B003VWMM5A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_6D78539Q7MSXX1GNHE0Y?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Thanks!
do they dry out if the lid is left off?
@@susanbarackman-artist7670 I’m actually not sure, because I haven’t done that 🥰
How do these compare with gelatos?
so u would consider them creamy ??? i got some from hobby lobby that r soooo dry
Oh nooooo! Mine glide across paper. Did you get a different brand?
They appear to dry quite quickly after applying to the paper....maybe why they don't blend that well ?
@@kathyb5740 that’s exactly right!
Good demonstration. Thanks. Doesn’t “tempura” mean oil based?
Not that I’ve heard. I understand acrylic and tempera to both be water based.
Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed it!
