Five Great Folk-Rock Bands You Should Listen To

The fat bearded one returns to some folk-rock…Which had absolutely no connection to his previous ones bringing in the views. This is a selection of what he’s calling “traditional folk-rock”. Which means it draws from the traditional folk of England, Scotland, Ireland and, in one case, further afield.

The fat bearded one is exceptionally incoherent, as he tells the story of Playboy Records, Ray Harris and Trace Studios. All of the photographs used are the copyright of Kenneth Christian. As this video is throwing a light on the little known music which was produced at Trace Studios for Playboy Records, I hope Mr Christian forgives my use of his images to illustrate the story. Love the Smiths songs Hedley. I should really do this tag - most of my records would qualify. Cheers, D
Great stuff Hedley, seems like Garcia was all over everyone's sessions in the 70s. If you are interested, I dropped my Americana tag earlier last week. Take part if you so choose!
@@samstjohn1994 Hi Sam. Yes, I watched your Americana tag. I am meaning to join in, I just need to find the time. Cheers - Hedley
@anotherfatbeardedmantalkin5893 thanks, I'll be on the lookout!
I came here because first i went to Rachel.s but it said 'Art Discussioin'...Art and Rachel are totally incongruous (especially that dope Maslof)...so I came here instead.
@@TheSixthBeatle-p9k I think you're safe from art discussions here...Although I can't guarantee I won't go off on one about my love of Vermeer in the future.
@@anotherfatbeardedmantalkin5893 Hedley I was counting on you to promote some music art , which you did, and you often do on your channel
I'm very close to the Smoky Mountains... everything about the people are bittersweet.
Great unexpected and unusual choices. Smiths choices especially. Nice job.
Hey! Thanks for watching.
No one can ruin my perfect songs!❤
Love the answers. The Chas and Dave by a popular band was totally pushing it 😂!
Hey! Chas and Dave were very popular in their day. You couldn't turn on the telly in the early 80s without seeing them, be it their appearances on Top of the Pops, the series of popular adverts for Courage Best Bitter, and they even had their own prime time TV show. ...Granted, they're less popular now.
No radiators in the music attic? You need a fan heater! I'm struggling with some of these questions so I'm hoping you'll give me some ideas.
I do have a little heater, but it's whirry noise really annoys me, and interrupts my enjoyment of music. It also creates an odd heat, which I find quite stifling.
What a great tag, marvellous answers Hedley, really enjoy the "Smiths" answers. I do not own any so if I do this I will follow your lead. Cheers man!
Yep that's a pretty sad selection Hedley. Nice take on the Smiths...
@@gatefold33 Well, waddaya do? I've already shown some Smiths records once this year, I ain't giving Morrissey any more of my time. This was far too easy for me, 99% of my music collection is sad bastard music.
I thought the Birmingham mistake was building HS2 there.
Boom boom! Very good. A bit of politics there.
Nice video and some sadness all around. Thanks for the tears and laughs.
Cheers. I'm not very good at being sad and mopey, I just don't have the commitment not to smile and have a laugh.
Thanks, I did have a good motherfucker. Cheers!
Expertly done. Liked the Smiths twist and the classical addition. You went deep into the caverns of sadness.
Oooh, the caverns of sadness. I like that. Sounds like the title of the next Indiana Jones film.
Hedley, good video. My choice for 4. It’s a love song, but it’s sad: Cal Smith - Country Bumpkin. Thanks, Chris
Afternoon Hedley. As usual you had me chuckling away with your wit. Great answers to a really good tag and the mind boggling "thanksgiving" confusion had me laughing. Have a great weekend, Floss.
I really don't know how I managed to go from Thanksgiving to Motherf**ker. I'm putting it down to the cold and the sad bastard music. Cheers - Hedley
This is the first response I have seen. Very good, especially the Thanksgiving part!
@@EmbryonicRobot Ha! Yeah my sad bastard mind wasn't fully operational in the cold.
Amy Winehouse. Back to black..is that sad enough for you
Thanks for the nomination. And Happy Mother F*cker to all the Yanks 😀
Tears in your Beer: although, not a typical country song, Loudon Wainwright III's Downdrinking At The Bar crossed my mind. Nice, how you handled the Smiths.
@@narrowfield6846 The Smiths need careful handling...Mostly at arms length. Can't disagree with you on Loudon 👍
Ugh, this is such a sad and depressing tag LOL! My own upcoming Vinyl Tag 2025 (Red's Version) will have just a simple set of questions, and y'all will have fun showing the answers. POOOKE!!!
Hi Hedley, great video. I loved your responses and the way you manipulated the answers. Have a good weekend. Steve
@@SteveWhitty1965 Thanks, Steve. I showed some Smiths records not long ago, so I wasn't going to give Morrissey any more of my time. Cheers - Hed
"a pathetic rain" haha
@@moc5022 It's mostly pathetic rain in the UK. No commitment.
This was fantastic, Hedley! 😂 The Smiths had me cracking up. My wife darting her eyes at me from the other end of the couch. Some fantastic prose as always in your descriptions. “A howl into the cosmos…” “A pathetic rain…” Exactly! I’ll need to check out that Flubber album. Good fun indeed. Happy Motherf***er!
@@TheDigitalGramophone Hey, Jon. Sorry for The Smiths dodge, but I just showed some Smiths records, I'm not giving Morrissey anymore attention. I hope some more sad bastards join in, I'm always happy to let a bit of sadness into my life. Yeah, I hope you had yourself a nice Motherf***er too. Hed
Well done Hedley, that Jean Sheppard record sounds interesting. I feel significantly sad now and hope to be depressed enough after the holiday to add to the thread. Take care my friend.
@@elliottcrews4997 Hey Elliott. Thanks for watching. Glad to fill the VC sadness void while y'all are having turkey and arguing with relatives. Cheers - Hedley
Mazzy tagged me for this tag. I was surprised you didn’t pick the first song that came to my mind.
If that’s an LP you’ve got a really huge index finger 😂. Hank has got to be the most depressing of them all. Jacqueline du pre, sad story exceptional cellist. Enjoyed the video.
Maybe I need a little hand on a stick to pull-off the CD-vinyl switcheroo. No one did sadness like Hank...You know, in a good way. Cheers - Hedley
The Straight Story is a fantastic movie with a wonderful soundtrack. Great choice.
@@mozzie22 My sister and me argue over The Straight Story. I think it's lovely, but she finds it maudlin and sentimental. I wish they'd released the soundtrack on vinyl. Cheers - Hedley
I rather enjoy a few days on my own.
@@vinylrichie007 I spend most of my days on my own, so I need to be rescued from my decent into existential despair on an evening.
I just made my choices for this thread. I’m surprised you didn’t pick the saddest song of all time.
I think I'd be up for York - especially as we nearly moved there. Beautiful city. I'd have been all over those Japanese records having tough deliberations. But like which sushi to go for....... Lou Reed hmmmmm yes I don't remember it but was working a la record shop then it passed me by unlike New York. Weather Prophets in my indie ballpark too. McGarrigle have seen and very close to getting no idea what stopped me. I'm with you on the dull regular stalls I am a decent browser and can spot what I'm looking for pretty quick. Bargains, samples, cheese. Not necessarily in that order. Your beard is looking very beardy and full. Lovely. As a compliment of course. I start then bottle it. I don't want to maintain it either. Far too much effort. 90s I had bad sideburns but no one ever told me.......
Hi Hedley, thanks for posting about York Record Fair and for the video. I organise the fair and was planning to number the stalls on the information "booklet" but there were some time issues and the stall numbers were missing. Will definitely get the stall numbers sorted out for next time. Hope you can make it on 5th April. Thanks, John
Hi John, Well done on organising the best record fair I've been to. I never fail to come away with an armful of records. I hope you don't mind me mentioning the numbering. You had already gone above and beyond what was needed, and I was nitpicking. I'll have to persuade my mates in the video making "Vinyl Community" to join me next time. Roll on April. Cheers for all your work - Hedley
Great Tex Withers story
Only mekons i have is a single song " this funeral is for the wrong corpse" a CPGB CD
Fantastic introduction, very artistic
Another brilliant video, great LPs
@@moc5022 Thanks 👍
Got the CD version of the christy moore comp. It's a good one. Goes well with the planxty comp that came with a DVD of 70s TV performances
Hey! I can't remember if the album came with a download card or if Amazon gave me the download, but I got mp3s of all the tracks which were not on the double vinyl release. That was about another 20 songs.
Is that a balalika behind you? Great video, don't have any idea who these artists are. You didn't mention the dreaded 'psych' or 'prog' or god forbid 'Northern soul'
Hello! No, what you can see behind me is a guitar I made out of a wine box. What's your beef with Northern Soul? It's just bangin' soul music.
Yugoslav folk...subbing right away Haha!
@@moc5022 Give me another decade, and there might be some more Yugoslav folk coming along.
Score on Horslips for £5, that’s their best LP. Nice acquisitions
Yeah, I couldn't say no at that price.
Hey Headley..That Weather Prophets album has sat in my Local Oxfam for months now £12.00. I remember they were meant to be the next U2, but it was the well trodden path of Indie band jumping to a major, slightly losing the magic & getting swamped in producers, bad advise & ending up hating each other, a similiar story with the House Of Love who also jumped from Creation & had a nightmarish experience. Theres an amazing book about Creation Records by David Cavanagh which details both bands decline, its fascinating & horrifying in equal measure. I bought all the Mike Nesmith albums in the early nineties when you couldnt give them away after The Lemonheads covered 'Different Drum' The slide on 'Wax Minute' 'Harmony Constant' & Calico Girlfriend is really magic. I love all his stuff.
Hey! The Weather Prophets' Mayflower is a solid album. I can imagine someone looking to propel them to the big league, but Peter Astor is no front man. I'm not sure how he came across on stage, on record he's proficient but rather lacking in personality. Not helped by some rather bland lyrics. More recently he's making albums as Ellis Island Sound, who produced instrumental music which goes in all kinds of directions. Good stuff. Cheers - Hedley
Weather profits similar to Rough riders . Horslips and Spud all four have some great some middling and some boring tracks but the better tracks are excellent. But all your choices are good excluding those jap ones. Why no singles do you have a grudge against them?
I remember seeing the Beat Farmers at Club Lingerie. One of the dudes in Weather Prophets looks like the singer from Radiohead. The Lucinda Williams sounded great. I’ve never seen that Michael Nesmith album.
Hey! The Beat Farmer's Country Dick Montana had two rules. "You don't touch my hat, and you don't touch my ass." I think all late 80s indie bands had a dude who looked like the singer from Radiohead. It was contractual.
Love that early Lucinda album too. Your pick up always interest me. The John Martyn Church with One Bell you flipped through is such a beautiful record. All moody covers and supposedly the label bought him that church in trade for doing a covers album. And of course the entire Buena Vista family of records are classic. ❤️🔥
Hey Mazzy! I'd spent up by the time I came across those John Martyn albums. He's an artist I have only a few records by. I have Solid Air and an 80s live album, which has far too much unlistenable jazz rock for my liking. Maybe I'll look out for his earlier folky albums at the next fair. Hed
Evening Hedley. You got some great albums there. Shame about the "blind buys" but worth a go all the same. Thanks for the video, all the best, floss.
Hey Floss. Yeah, I was disappointed by those Japanese records. It's even more frustrating that they did have one good tune on both of them. Why couldn't they have extended that to the whole record!?
I’ve watched many of your videos and was impressed with the quality of sound from a LP. Do you use a filter to clean pops and clicks from your LPs?
@@marvinlowe3097 Hi Marvin. Thanks for watching. Right now I'm running an Ortofon 2M Blue, I'm connecting a Behringer USB audio interface from the output of my Schiit Mani 2 Phono Stage into my laptop and editing on Audacity. Apart from turning the gain up or down, and fading in and out, I do nothing else. No filters or anything to clean up the sound. So it's basically just the sound of the record. Cheers - Hedley
First time to check you out and enjoyed it!
Cheers 👍
Hedley, nice fair, thanks for the tour. You got some nice albums there, don't have that Lou Reed yet, but I been holding it a few times but always something else that was more important to follow me home. Never seen that Tina Turner album before, sounded cool. Ibrahim Ferrer have a marvellous vibe. Do not think I have heard Kate & Anna before, need to check it up. The Japanese albums was a nice punt, the first tune had a nice swing and the second wasn't to bad, but I guess both was not your cup of tea. Cheers
Good evening Hedley. Nice to see you again. Longtime fan of Mike Nesmith. I got a chance to see him play with The Monkees and I did not miss out. I actually saw them a few times without Mike and once with him. Even better with him. I saw all of them before they sadly passed on. I think some of the stuff from Palais was songs that he recorded with the First National Band. <> Really appreciate your honest review of "Magic and Loss". Being a big Lou Reed fan. I am always interested in hearing what our fellow VC members say about his solo albums. <> I always wanted to dig a little deeper into some of the older Tina albums. She really had it all as a performer. I would say that you did really well at the Fair. Thank you for taking us along~ Rob/Boston
Hey Rob! I'm very jealous you got to see Mike Nesmith and The Monkees. I bet those were fun shows. Yeah, the material from Live at the Palais was predominantly from his albums he recorded with The First National Band, although considering it was recorded the same year as From A Radio Engine To The Photon Wing, it's very surprising he presented no songs from that album. I'm not a big fan of 80s Tina, but her proper soul records are great in my book. After I filmed the video I saw that Tina Turns The Country On! is getting a 50th anniversary "half speed" remaster, released next week. Talk about surfing the zeitgeist. Cheers - Hedley
19:21 ~ Rob/Boston
Hey Hedley. I have that Lucinda record. Not bad for so early in her career. I think she released another on Folkways after that. I have all those McGarrigle albums as well, but not minty like those from the cheapie bin. Cheers.
Thanks for swinging by Jack. I totally acknowledge that Williams would go on to become a better writer, and record better albums, but there's something about those early folky recordings I love. Considering the minty nature of those McGarrigle albums, I imagined they would be 80s reissues, but I discovered they were original UK pressings when putting them into Discogs. Well happy. Cheers - Hedley
