  • Strike while the iron is hot, they say. Well, it's taken the fat bearded one over a week to sort this out, so that iron will be rather tepid now. Never mind, I'm sure he'll be sharing some great records...Yeah, right!

    Really great haul You got there Hedley. Had forgotten about the Poodles. And a loving almost closing with soulful gospel leanings of Bobbie Whitlock ✌🏻.

      I forget the Fab Poos (as their fans affectionately call them) had a minor US hit with Mirror Star. I believe their first two albums were not released in the US, but were edited together into a album which was released in the US on the strength of the Mirror Star single.
      One day I'll get around to doing my response to your gospel rock video. I've got so much stuff I reckon you'd love.

    "You're all looking absolutely lovely" - just dripping with genuineness - made me chuckle. Fab Poodles went well with the B-52s and the like. Wish I'd hung on to them. Never knew Don Gibson sounded so cool. Dig the Motors, etc. Another great video!

      Hey J Neb! Thanks for watching. The Fab Poos are great when it works, but there is an inconsistency. Probably because of their comedic approach. That is a cool Don Gibson tune.

      Yeah, The Motors are a fun band. The hints of Motown R&B really lift it above their first album. I still can't believe that album gives Lou Rawls such a big billing, considering he only has two songs on the album. Sneaky marketing.

    Oh you encouraged us in with new wave and then hit us with country...I enjoyed the Don Gibson. Glad you had some success in Rob's Records, I'd have walked straight out once I'd sussed there weren't hidden bargains.

      Ha! I suddenly realised when I was editing the video that it was yet another country heavy one. Should've bunged in a needle drop of The Motors to readdress the balance. That Don Gibson tune has been enjoyed by quite a few people, must be good. It wouldn't sound out of place on that Choctaw Ridge comp.
      I didn't last long in Rob's Records. I had a carrier bag full of records cutting into my hand, I was hot, substantially worse off than I had been two hours earlier and I was getting the fear.

    You've got me with Fabulous Poodles, and Willie Nelson ! Have never seen that early Willie, hope to run into one someday..Don Gibson " Oh Lonesome Me".. loved the way Neil covered that on " After The Goldrush".

      You know what JT? I don't think I've ever twigged that that was the same song. It's been so Neil-afied it's unrecognisable. I think I'll take Don Gibson's original or Gene Vincent's version, over Young's.

    Some great finds there - coincidentally was spinning the Fab Poos yesterday - came in a 24" collectable sleeve at the time - found mine at a local library record sale a year or so after it came out; tricky to assign to a genre. Those shops like Bob's are always interesting/scary - got one near me: The Record Detective Agency, where the owner can nail the price of anything you unearth to within 50p on the median discogs price in seconds. Standouts for me were the Motors (the glorious monikered Bram Tchaikovsky), Willie and Whitlock finds (was not aware of the latter). Cheers, Paul

    • @anotherfatbeardedmantalkin5893
      @anotherfatbeardedmantalkin5893  2 роки тому

      Hey! A 24" collectable sleeve!? I didn't know that. How brilliant and annoying at the same time. I've always like the look of the Bram Tchaikovsky album cover which is a swipe from Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future. Great design.
      Bobby Whitlock is one of those artists who people have only really heard of through their work with more famous pop stars. The lofi country folk artist wrote a great song called Guilty by association, which is inspired by his experience being best known for having his first album produced by Michael Stipe. Backing vocals on the song were by Stipe.

    Hi Hedley. I sort of remember the Fabulous Poodles and I do love those cover photos with various folks wearing pink specs. Very new wave!
    I do like Nottingham and go there about once a year as my pal Michael lives there. Rob’s Records is something else, though I have found some good stuff in there. Take care, John.

      Hi John, thanks for popping round.
      The Fab Poos' albums are a bit hit end miss affairs. They can knock out some great new wavey tunes, but their penchant for comedy can be a bit tiresome.
      I was rather happy with what I managed to find at Rob's Records, I've been after that Bobby Whitlock album for a while. I'm sure I could've unearth more, but fatigue had set in and the hunt was over for me.

    Good evening Hedley. Great to hear that you hooked up with John and Paul. I do not think that I know Paul. But I do know John. If there was ever a 'Best VC Video Intro' category I would vote for John hands down. >< I do remember the Fabulous Poodles. I have the album Mirror Stars. I think its called Mirror Stars. Or something like that. >< I remember James Griffiths talking about The Motors with me. >< Real quickly. I heard a lot about Nottingham through the years. What is it like? Is it primarily city or is it country like? I really like the song 'I'd Rather Live the Straight Life' on the Bobby Whitlock album. I am sure that you will like it because it has some country feel to it. He kind of reminds me of a soulful Joe Cocker. >< Fantastic update. BTW. You are looking absolutely lovely yourself Hedley. >< Have a super week. Catch up soon~
    Rob/Boston

    • @anotherfatbeardedmantalkin5893
      @anotherfatbeardedmantalkin5893  2 роки тому

      Hi Rob! Yeah, the Fab Poos album Mirror Stars was a US only release combining songs from their first two records, which didn't get a US release.
      Nottingham is a largish industrial city (the 7th largest in the UK) almost slap bang in the centre of the country. It's an old city, so it has the prerequisite castles and old buildings and has the tourism based on the connections to Robin Hood...Or at least the myths of Robin Hood.
      There was quite a few albums around the same time that have a similar feel to that Bobby Whitlock album. I think it's the influence that Delaney and Bonnie had , bringing gospel to rock music.
      Cheers - Hed

    Great that you hooked up with John and it sounds like you had a great time in Nottingham...I bumped into him last weekend at The Moseley Folk Festival.
    My brother and I headed towards Nottingham many years ago with the intention of doing some busking..sadly, the big end went in the car by The Belfry so we never got there!.
    I love that Motors album..and it's a lot more interesting than the debut..Airport is a fascinating pop song, with all its twists and turns and rhythm changes.
    Those shops with piles of records everywhere are fascinating, and it never ceases to amaze how the owners can keep so on top of everything under those conditions!!.
    Queens' funeral is a week Monday which means I'm owed a days holiday now at work as I'd already booked that week off.!
    Good to see you again Hedley.

    • @anotherfatbeardedmantalkin5893
      @anotherfatbeardedmantalkin5893  2 роки тому +1

      Hey! I meant to ask John if he bumped into you at the festival, but I assumed that it was highly unlikely in the crowds. Mind you, I'm always surprised how tall John is (he looks slightly Hobbit-like on camera), so it wasn't out of the question you might spot him looming over the crowd.
      Yup, lucky the funeral is going to be on Monday, which means I should still be able to head to the Vinyl Tap's £1 clearout on the Tuesday. I've even bought myself a new record bag for the occasion.
      As I said in the video, Airport is a song I remember as a cover version, so hearing the real version is an odd experience. Familiar, yet different. I'm trying to remember which other songs had covers on that Parade of the Pops tape. I think their was a faux Kate Bush, possibly The Man with the Child in His Eyes.
      Cheers - Hedley

    The Don Gibson cut had such a nice groovy soul feel to it, pretty good stuff. I use to have a few Fabulous Poodle albums but not the one she showed. I love the samples, so many of those albums I might now have bee interested in but then you hear a sample and it tweaks your ears. I never had a Terapin, I did bring one home but it really began to smell so I had to let it go

    Hey Hedley, love that Sleepy LaBeef album, Wes McGhee sounds interesting, but somebody give that guy a dictionary!!!! I never see that Willie or the Merle Branded albums in the wild, great finds. Crown Records if memory serves me, and often it doesn't is one of those labels that put out bunches of obscure, cheaply recorded LPs with the "throw it against the wall and see if it sticks" philosophy. And sometimes it works, like that RR albums it sounds like!!! I really enjoyed the visit, take care my friend.

    • @anotherfatbeardedmantalkin5893
      @anotherfatbeardedmantalkin5893  2 роки тому +1

      Ha! I probably shouldn't have used that song by Wes McGhee, it's not really representative of his music. His later 80s albums go in a Tex-Mex direction, and sound not unlike some of Flaco Jimenez's collaborations with Peter Rowan.
      I think Crown, like a lot of the smaller US record labels, were making budget records to be bought from convenience stores and gas stations. They were never designed to get big sales, just make a little money to feed back into the business.
      I've got another Red Rhodes album from later in his career produced by Michael Nesmith, which is a far more trippy and rocky affair.
      Thanks for watching Elliott - Hedley

    Hi Hedley. Hooray it's the Motors! I've been thinking of doing another video on that LP, the first I ever owned I think. They had to replace that awful cover with an alternative one, as no-one was buying it. Unfortunately the other cover was even worse, so people carried on not buying it.
    The Fabulous Poodles get a mention in my Squeeze book at the moment John Bentley joins the band, as he was apparently a former member, though I've never actually seen his name on any Flying Poodles records I've ever found (which isn't many). Is he on that one? Bentley was from Hull but I'm not sure if the Poodles also were, or how he came to be in them. Even though I was nominally in touch with him, he was reluctant to share anything all that meaningful with me. There's something a bit Jam-like about the bass playing on the needle-drop.
    Very much like the sound of the Don Gibson and Joe Tex records. Interesting to see another Wes McGhee. The 'standing outside the movie theatre' album art on that particular record is very similar to one I picked up a while back by Dave Dudley...wonder if it was a series?
    Looks like you had a run of good luck in Nottingham. I haven't been there for many years but I used to review jazz gigs there, in a small room above the Bonington Leisure Centre. Cheers, James

      That cover reminds me of the first Barenaked Ladies' album, Gordon. The original cover is the most horrible photo of the awkward looking band being extra wacky, but when it was reissued only four years later the band had been removed and replaced with a basketball.
      The Motors look far less wacky and more like a reunion of a bunch of borstal boys. The pub rock group Ducks Deluxe look equally rough on their debut album cover.
      It's funny, I've been thinking about album covers and how important they can be in the success of a record. I've been buying cheapo records from Amazon over the last couple of years, and they all have a couple of things in common. The music is usually very good, equal to or better than similar more successful artists, and the covers are all design nightmares. This leads me to think their is a correlation between poor cover design and lack of album sales.
      John Bentley isn't on this Fab Poos album, but I can see he has a writing credit on the track Doctor on their first album. I wonder than if he was with them early on when they were just called The Poodles. I'll have to get the liner notes on the CD boxset I have, to see it that can enlighten us.
      Cheers - Hed

    Damn that Willie Nelson is awesome! I almost never find anything by him from that era. I also recently picked up an original Marvin Rainwater, and a comp by him too. I have a few of his earlier rockabilly material like I Dig You Baby on 45. Same with Don Gibson, got a bunch of stuff by him a few months ago! Sorry for the late sub, I could've sworn I was already subscribed!

      As I think I said, that Marvin Rainwater comp is all over the shop stylistically, but it's nice to have tracks from various points of his early career.

    Hello Hedley, ah record fairs, great fun especially if you can link up with some mates. Think I have that Fabulous Poodles about somewhere and I did find the Motors (with that cover!) in a charity shop some years ago, James had been talking about them on his channel just prior so I also had to give them a go in homage. Might have the reissue of Bobby Whitlock that Light In The Attic put out (with what they invariably refer to as a "tip on" jacket!). Can't go wrong with Bear Family for 5 quid, not a label I have much by except for one or two reggae releases they put out in more recent years, had no idea they had been trading since the early 80's. Willie Nelson is fairly unusual to find here as well on the whole though I've chanced across the odd bit for cheap in my travels. Ah Johnny Horton, I have that one as well (a surprisingly high percentage of mutually owned records in this video!), many times as a kid my dad would unwind after a long week of work by cranking up Battle Of New Orleans on the old turntable. Cheers!

    • @anotherfatbeardedmantalkin5893
      @anotherfatbeardedmantalkin5893  2 роки тому

      Oh, how I hate the American 'Tip On' jackets, Doug. I had to do some maintenance on the Whitlock and couple of the other records I showed. I really don't understand how it has become a noted feature and a marker of quality for represses recently? They were clearly the cheaper way to construct a jacket, as they were only printing onto paper and sticking it onto cardboard. The UK cover might be thinner and more flimsy, but the edges hold together and can easily be fixed with a bit of glue. What type of jackets do you get on Jamaican reggae albums? I'm imagining budgets were pretty tight.
      Have you heard Johnny Horton's version of The Battle of New Orleans which he recorded for release in the Commonwelth, which is from the British perspective? I that was the version which was a hit in the UK, I wonder if that was the Canadian version as well?
      Cheers - Hedley

      @@anotherfatbeardedmantalkin5893 No, we heard the American version with the Brits as the enemy, I had no idea there was another one! The Jamaican sleeves are cheaply printed on US style cardboard - and often recycled as well, it can be a hoot peering inside the sleeve and finding that it started life as another LP, or perhaps a cereal box, now turned inside out!

      Hey Flash! All three of the Fab Poos albums are much of a muchness. They all have some great tunes and others which don't really land, meaning they're all rather inconsistent. Their second album, Unsuitable, has their minor US hit Mirror Stars. As their first two albums weren't released in the US, they might be hard to find. Their was a US album which combined songs from those two albums, which will be your best bet, although Think Pink did have a US release.
      I thank you for your condolences. Being a staunch republican (Not the US party), I would happily see the back of the monarchy. So not much grief in my house. But I recognise the sad death of a mother, grandmother and great grandmother for the royal family, and respect how many in my country feel.

    That is a great Willie Nelson album. Hank has a filthy fucking mouth. The Motors for two pounds is good. Merle Haggard is one of the best. The Battle of New Orleans was a big hit in the UK, but in an altered version which isn't so down on the British. In the version recorded for the Uk and the commonwealth market, it's not the Brits who were running.
