      @@buck13horn Yes, I do love Calexico's two collaborative albums with Iron & Wine. But then there's very little by Calexico I don't love. I still mean to pick up the album Calexico recorded backing the Scottish musician, Dean Owens. That sounded great.

    I haven't thought of that Supersucker's album in a long time. That was such a nice surprise when it came out. I think it's their best one. Cool to see Kelly Hogan and the Handsome Family get some love too. I saw the Handsome Family quite a bit in the late 90's/early 2000's. Would love to see them again sometime. Great video. I love Giant Sand - especially Ramp. I was listening to Calexico's The Black Light this morning. What a corker that is. I managed to see a lot of Americana bands back around 2000 to 2005. Mainly at Bonaventures in Bristol and the Borderline. My mate was massively into it all and I tagged along a lot. One of my favourite gigs was seeing Victoria Williams and Mark Olsen play. They were great, as were Richmond Fontaine. Best of all were the Sadies. Blow any band off the stage. Lots for me to check out here. Cheers, Steve.

      Just in case you didn't know, if you go to the Milk Carton Kids website you can download a couple of early albums by them.
      Supersuckers were a rock/punkish band who started to mess around with putting country songs on their albums. Then, much to the annoyance of some of their fan base, they recorded Must've Been High, a full on country album.
      They did a split single with Steve Earle. He covered their song Creepy Jackalope Eye, and Supersuckers did Earle's Angel Is A Devil.

I really appreciated your mentioning Tarnation in your last video and the Handsome Family in this one but I was hoping that you'd mention Freakwater who I think are one of the more criminally forgotten alt-country bands. That Handsome Family gig I mentioned at the Leeds City Varieties, was not the couple's finest moment. Brett Sparks was really quite pissed, which was funny at first, but as you realised he was incapable of performing I got a bit pissed off...But not as pissed off as his wife Rennie looked.

    Hi Hedley. I thought this would be right up your alley and actually tagged you for this. I do like Calexico but only have a couple of their albums. Most of my Americana artists seem to be even further out than 20 years ago. I have been trying to remedy that. You introduced me to quite a few new artists in you video. I liked seeing the Milk Carton Kids and if you like Everly Brothers tinged harmonies, I might suggest The Cactus Blossoms. I only have one album by The Handsome Family, but you have spurred me to give it a listen as I haven't played it in years. Along with introducing me to several new artists, there are quite a few that I am pretty familiar with such as Kelly Hogan, Iron & Wine, The Waco Brothers (Bloodshot was/is a fine label) and Todd Snider. Great response.

      I listened to the first Cactus Blossoms album, but nothing more recent. They sounded like the Everly Brothers were a big influence. In fact I very nearly showed the Everly’s Songs Our Daddy Taught Us, the stripped back arrangements really shows off their beautiful harmonies.
      After the scandal which brought down Bloodshot, their new owners have resurrected the label and are promising vinyl releases of some choice albums from their back catalogue. Hopefully some of my favourites will be on the list.

    • @anotherfatbeardedmantalkin5893
      @anotherfatbeardedmantalkin5893  8 місяців тому

      Hey! I’d say it’s a music which looks to country and old school folk. Rootsy. Of course Americana could describe anything which comes from America; Jazz, Hip-Hop, Techno or R&B, but in practice it’s become used for music, art and design which looks backward. Have a listen to the playlist I put together, it should give you the idea of what I think Americana is.

    ' Betty Lonely' heartbreaking and beautiful.
