Alia Atreides: Understanding An Abomination | Dune Explained
In-depth analysis of Alia Atreides, also known as Saint Alia of the Knife and the Womb of Heaven. She is the sister of Paul Muad'dib Atreides.
Like many characters in Dune, Alia’s story is a tragedy - maybe the most tragic one. Hers is a story about a woman predestined to destroy herself. Alia is an abomination and to really understand Alia and her suffering, we need to understand what it means to be an Abomination.

Stilgar's Story Is Darker Than You Might Think | Dune Explained
Переглядів 147 тис.21 день тому
In depth analysis of Stilgar from Dune. Whenever I saw Stilgar in Part Two, I couldn’t help but recall a quote from the first book. While his fanaticism made some people laugh, for me, those scenes were a reminder of a deeper tragedy. Javier Bardem’s amazing performance brings out a more humorous side of Stilgar, making him a source of some comic relief. But while his zealotry may seem amusing ...
What Actually Is This Golden Path? | Dune Explained

Dune explained. If you're a Dune fan, you've probably seen a lot of online discussion about the Golden Path. This term is the key point to the debate about whether Paul and Leto Atreides are heroes or villains; and for many people it’s the only justification for their terrible actions. All those wars and the deaths of billions; they were all means to forge this way. So, what exactly was this Go...
Why DUNE's Messiah Is A Lie? | Dune Explained

Dune Explained. Who are the Kwisatz Haderach, Lisan Al-Gaib and the Bene Gesserit? In the world of Dune, the concept of a promised savior is a reccuring theme. Whether called the Kwisatz Haderach, Lisan al-Gaib or just the Messiah, it all points to humanity's desperate need for a god-like hero. But with his Dune novels, Frank Herbert explores the dangerous side of this need. Because in the book...
Paul Atreides Is A Warning | Dune Explained

In-depth analysis of Paul Atreides. For all life, Frank Herbert believed heroes were a recipe for disaster. Even if we found a real superhero, he thought that flawed mortals would eventually gather around such a leader and form a power, and this power would somehow be abused. And with his Dune Saga, he actually warns us that a society relies on a single charismatic and powerful leader is in gre...

Midsommar explained. We all crave a sense of belonging. It's that warm, comforting feeling we get from being part of something bigger than ourselves. And especially in modern society, the formations ...
Saltburn's Oliver Quick: Understanding a Sociopath

Last couple of days, Oliver Quick lives in my head rent free. Since the movie reveals little about his background, I can't help but wonder what led him to become such a psychopath. From what we do know about his family and upbringing, it seems like he had a fairly ordinary and decent life. So, what was actually wrong with Oliver? Saltburn is one of the most disturbing movies I’ve seen recently....

I disagree. Without belief we wouldn't have heroes. We wouldn't have much to live for. We would be little more than animals. Remember , one mans terrorist is another man's freedom fighter, or hero, and only victory or defeat determines the lens he is viewed through. Is it tragic to have devotion to the point of being willing to sacrifice yourself for a cause, especially one that is foundationally to benefit all of your people (as opposed to a sefish motive)? I don't believe Stilgar would consider it tragic, at least not at this point in the saga. And I'm also beginning to disagree with the false messiah label. Regardless of whether the story had initially been planted, Paul IS the fulfillment of the prophecy; he IS the Kwisatz Haderach and Lisan al-Gaib, and therefore not "false" as an imposter would be, or a Sabbatai Zvi was in real world. Just my 2 cents.

Otto has the wish and drive to improve his families standing. He doesnt do so by some dagger and poison method but by carefully political movements and diplomacy. Honestly the only argument you could bring against his political actions in general is saying that in a feudale society no one should dare and try to improve their own standing. Also if you look at daemon only through his actions...than daemon is a bloody psychopath

Excellent breakdown! Human beings can invent and create stories that become engrained in their cultures and then morph into heroes, myths, and ultimately religions with God-like figures that manifest themselves in beliefs sustained by and with prophecies. Joseph Campbell, a literature professor, of comparative mythology, and religions wrote extensively on these themes. Frank Herbert, as well as George Orwell, are more relevant today for their precise analysis of human behavior!

Alia was both victim and villian. Poor girl. It was nothing that she wanted but she couldn't escape. She, her mother the Lady Jessica, Chani and Ghanima were all victims of other people's greed. They were so strong and intelligent, but Frank Herbert doesn't fully develop them. They were all pivotal to Maud Dib's becoming the emperor.

🤔It seems to me that Travis is grappling with existential depression? And can't cope with the fact that safety is an illusion: that *feeling* safe & *being* safe are 2 unrelated things. Travis, as a war vet, feels safe in unsafe situations (like war) but can't handle the fact that he somehow feels unsafe in perfectly safe conditions (not bein' in a warzone). I'm guessing Taxidriver is about the realisation what *Existential Idiocy* actually means. Allow me to explain what *Existential Idiocy* means: 👨‍🏫The Default Mode Network (DMN) is a network of brain regions that are active when the individual is not focused on the outside world and the brain is at wakeful rest. It's like the brain's "autopilot" mode, involved in daydreaming, envisioning the future, and retrieving memories. This network might be active when we're pondering the big questions in life or trying to gain insight into our own emotions. 🧠On the other hand, Existential Intelligence refers to the sensitivity and capacity to tackle deep questions about human existence, such as the meaning of life, why we die, and how did we get here. Individuals with high existential intelligence are proficient at understanding and contemplating complex existential features of life. 💠While both involve introspection and contemplation, they are not exactly the same. The DMN is a physical network in the brain observed via neuroimaging techniques, while Existential Intelligence is a theoretical construct that is part of a proposed model of multiple intelligences. It's possible that individuals with high Existential Intelligence might have a more active or well-connected DMN, but this would be a question for empirical research. 〽I suffer from existential depression because my Existential Intelligence is too high, meaning that I'm accutely aware that I'm surrounded by Existential Idiots [= people with low to 0 Existential Intelligence] so they'll always choose 💰(or whatever shorttime goal they have) over survival of mankind. Existential Idiots will happily become millionaires by poluting the environment. To me Existential Idiots are to society, what sociopaths/psychopaths are to humanity. I'm drawing a parallel between these 2 types of individuals based on their impact on society & humanity. 🔪On 1 hand, you have *psychopaths,* who are often characterized by a lack of empathy and disregard for the feelings and rights of others. On the other hand, you have what I coined *Existential Idiots,* individuals who prioritize short-term gains over long-term consequences, potentially to the detriment of humanity's survival. The lack of empathy and disregard for others' feelings and rights, often associated with psychopaths, can have detrimental effects on society. Similarly, individuals who prioritize short-term gains over long-term consequences, the so-called Existential Idiots, can pose a threat to humanity's survival. ♻It highlights the importance of empathy and long-term thinking in maintaining a healthy society and ensuring the survival of humanity. It also underscores the potential dangers of systems that prioritize short-term gains without considering long-term consequences. 🌐However, it's important to remember that people's actions and decisions are often influenced by a complex interplay of factors, including their personal circumstances, societal pressures, and systemic structures. It's crucial to address these underlying issues in order to promote empathy and long-term thinking. ⚠In short: *I suffer from existential depression because I'm accutely aware that in* *my lifetime I'll always be outnumbered by Existential Idiots.* *Unfortunately modernday society does not yet recognise the dangers of* *Existential Idiocy as it has done for psychopathy & sociopathy.*

Tywin is known for his stoic, extremely intelligent and calculating attitude, and also his cold, manipulative and often unrestrained personality, even towards his family. The character insists that everything he does is because of his family. Tywin's own father, Lord Tytos, was a generous and caring man whose misinvestments and indecision brought House Lannister to ruin. As a result, when admitting to Arya Stark that Tytos was "a good man", Tywin regarded his father's kindness as a source of weakness. Therefore, he successfully rebuilt his family's fortune almost single-handedly, and this, coupled with his total destruction of House Reyne, led him to embrace ruthlessness as a principle of keeping the family in power. Ironically, his harsh actions and unwillingness to serve as a caring father figure have resulted in severe emotional problems in all three of his children, who are terrified of him. Tywin only sporadically visited his home at Casterly Rock, and on the occasions when he returned, he would deal with severe punishment for any transgressions his children committed while he was away. Overall, however, for a man who claims to value family above all else, Tywin hypocritically destroyed his relationships with his own children. And even though he was a very efficient ruler, Tywin made FIVE (5) COLOSSAL MISTAKES: I) he always seeks to promote the interests of his house, even at the expense of the kingdom (for example, he would not forgive the crown's debt to House Lannister); II) his methods are excessively cruel: he employs extremely brutal warriors like Mountain and Lorch, gives them freedom to commit atrocities while carrying out his orders and has no qualms about killing small children, babies or even entire houses; III) even though he believes that family is the most important thing to him, he mistreats his children and sees his legacy as more important to him than family, that his house needs so many heirs to build House Lannister; IV) although Tywin is powerful and respected, his power was only built on fear, which made his house vulnerable after his death; V) Tywin's power, arrogance and stubbornness made him believe he was more superior than anyone or anything, even the gods, old and new. Committing acts, such as the Red Wedding, believing that no consequences would follow from their actions, even disregarding the words "Northerners will never forget", never realizing that their hold on the North would be lost and their home would be brought into a dangerous situation by their daughter in her mad quest for power. In the end, his infinite prioritization of his legacy over his children ended up destroying his goal and killing him as well: after many years of abuse, hatred and disrespect, Tyrion killed him and thanks to Cersei's foolishness and selfishness, destroyed Jaime, the rest of the family and Cersei herself. All of this can again be attributed to Tywin's arrogance, because he never believed that any of his children could actually oppose him, or even kill him, and also never really understood the extent to which in terms of cruelty, incompetence and deep selfishness Cersei was willing to go for power. Ironically, Olenna's relationship with her granddaughter Margaery showed how Tywin could relate to his children without being mean, overbearing, or cruel; and again, his fiercely conservative nature prevented him from understanding how important a positive relationship with them was and,... Now the head of House Lannister, Lord Paramount of the Westerlands and Lord of Castelry Rock is Tyrion, the son Tywin never wanted to be his heir, although everyone - except Tywin and Cersei - recognized as best suited for the role, perhaps even better than Tywin himself would ever have been. Other power moves: 1- never ask permission! 2- make yourself so independent that you don’t need them 3- make yourself indispensable 4- power is in the way you stare, your voice, your walk, your posture. 5- you must have courage to be powerful 6- have the courage to walk away from what doesn’t serve you. 7- have strong boundaries.

She's a definite villain, but not a narcissist. She didn't start as a villain, and her journey into villainy is interesting. She loved Leto, and a narcissist can't truly love someone more than themselves. She was a lot more timid before the Atreides were wiped out, and I think she was driven by revenge just as much as Paul, and after drinking the Water of Life she knew how to gain revenge--raise Paul up to Emperor. Everyone else suffered for it, including Paul and Alia.
