Saltburn's Oliver Quick: Understanding a Sociopath

- Last couple of days, Oliver Quick lives in my head rent free. Since the movie reveals little about his background, I can't help but wonder what led him to become such a psychopath. From what we do know about his family and upbringing, it seems like he had a fairly ordinary and decent life.
So, what was actually wrong with Oliver?
Saltburn is one of the most disturbing movies I’ve seen recently. It is visceral, disgusting but also a unique expression of the blurred lines between hatred and love. And Oliver is the focal point of it all.

Barry Keoghan for Oscars! He definitely deserves an Oscar for this performance. He became completely different personas at different parts of the movie. What a weirdo, in a good way!
I know him from 1917
I cant wait to see him as Joker
Not 2024. But most definitely in the Future. This year belongs to Cillian and RDJ. But Barry is on his way. He is riveting and insanely talented.
No Oscar nominations for Barry or Saltburn. BOO!
Great work. I think he straight up murdered Venetia. He had to make sure she was dead. And only way to do that is drug her and make it look like a suicide. If you watch back the scene where he discovers her, there’s an insane amount of blood across the bathroom floor. It feels like she struggled. And not only this, but I believe he orchestrated the “suicide” of the father. Ollie is much too cunning and determined to leave these types of things to chance.
I think this is one of the most accurate analysis on Oliver, good job!
Glad you like it!
Just wanted to say that there are plenty of Sociopaths and Psycopaths out there that are nothing like Oliver. It's a spectrum. Not every psycopath or sociopath is an abusive monster. Most of them are just people who lack empathy and can't seek help because their disorder is so stigmatized.
Agree.
This makes me paranoid that I have a sociopath because I trauma dump too much. I don’t do it purposely and I’m not gonna do it.
Do you realize that those sentences barely make any sense? Besides do u think it's normal to share weird stuff about your psyche while also using improperly medical terminology? Some people would do anything for attention
The story is a déjà vu of The talented Mr. Ripley's movie.
This. Ace. Thank you. Excellent.
Can u write in some comprehensible way?
I just wanted to thank you for understanding this movie, well done 👍
I would be careful with judging / assuming lovely his family. I do know family and they are playing super nice polite family in front of strangers but behind closed doors it is totally different story.
Well his dad was definitely not dead. He also said they lived in squalor but clearly they had a comfortable house. And he’d been lying to his parents too because they thought he was 1st in his class. It’s pretty safe to assume everything he said about them was a lie.
It's clear that his Mother lets him get away with anything. He probably learned early in life how to manipulate via doing it to his Mother.
I was confused, surprised, disgusted, and entertained by this movie. 😂🤷🏾♀️
Sociopaths are lazy. Psychopaths put in work. Oliver put in work, so he's clearly not a sociopath.
Yeah, I knew that kind of comment will come. I'm not sure why I didn't address it in the video, but you're right, he does exhibit psychopathic traits as well. But in a clinical setting, actually there is no difference between sociopathy and psychopathy. These terms simply offer two slightly different ways of understanding the diagnosis of Antisocial Personality Disorder. As you said, psychopaths tend to engage in more calculated behaviors. So, I think Oliver displays both psychopathic and sociopathic traits.
Not at all the psychiatric distinction between the two.
there’s definitely discrepancies in real life though
What's the intro music called?
Delorians - Daisy
need to see that movie
damn, if you watched this video its already ruined lmao.
ah no havent watch it yet, I heard about the movie a lot + I love this channel so I definitely should watch that movie xd @@spacekitt.n
It's not a good movie. Watch Talented Mr. Ripley to see how this movie wanted to turn out but failed at it.
Well you've just ruined it for yourself mate ffs
Umm-Oliver does not grow up in humble surroundings! There is also a bias in this film in favour of the upper classes- and I think that this is the angle that the film director more properly understands- perhaps because it’s more aligned with her lived experiences. The deconstruction of Oliver is less well realised. I think that - “The Talented Mr Ripley”, is a far better psychological investigation of a psychopath.
In the standards of UK, it's humble. (Plus, when you think about Felix's situation.)
Going Mykonos is not that expensive for middle class Brits or Americans @anjulamutanda2000
@@ValaritasYT I'm from the UK. Oliver's life is pretty good. I would say though that he is at the top of where the middle class can reach. You can't become member of the aristocracy unless you marry in, or, take what they have medieval style.
🔪
Talented Mr. Ripley-----same plot.
👍🏻
wait is sociopath here the same as ASPD
I didn't see it but people say its disgusting + weird
It does have some weird/disgusting scenes, but I think the story, character building and symbolism really makes up for it. It's really a shame people on the internet reduced it to 'ew that movie is so gross because of that one scene'. SMH
@@boop9948 i agree. i sometimes looked away honestly, and it helped that i knew what the scenes entailed so i didnt have to see it to understand what he was doing. but overall, those scenes really drive home how unhinged and obsessive oliver is and how little he cares about what is normal or acceptable in the process. it was important to include them for the story and character, not just shock-value.
Exactly!@@lunabibiane
All the disgusting/weird scenes are very over the top and try-hard. You can tell it was made by a person with a little talent at framing scenes but no real talent for making a compelling story. The villain character just does things. He has no depth, no personality, nothing. He just does bad things because he wants money. It's boring but shot in a way that makes it seem less boring. It's a flash in the pan type movie that wont be discussed in a couple years when people talk about serious, well made films.
Oliver is beguiling because he follows his desires. And celebrates his wins.
Oliver’s humble beginnings? That’s a bit of an overstatement. His family was solidly middle, if not upper middle, class. Pretty big house. Mykonos every year! He wasn’t actually a poor kid. You lost me after that.
The party goers don't forget Oliver's name, they are the Canton's friends they.litetally don't know him.
👍👍
So is he a sociopath or psychopath?
Socio path Oliver uses his Social awareness to help get what he wants, socios have lack of empathy, psychopaths often stay alone becuse they have no empathy at all !thats the difference Oliver is a socio path
@lachousalle31@@novadark1 Both. plus, psychopaths use more planned and calculated behaviors.
@AndreFlickUS no not both ,common misconception and Oliver has empathy he just lacks it ,now yes psychopaths are more calculating! Socio paths are good at only calculating under social situations
Haven't watch it but general demographic of people who have said it's good made me think it's trash.
The movie sucked at so many levels I can't start with one
Or you just don’t know what to say?
@pavlinahrebackova3000 the hasty ending, the cliché of gay baiting, basic social class struggles, including disgusting scenes to make people talk about the movie, poor character development for Oliver, etc.
