Excellent video
👍👍
I am lucky enough to have been a teenager during the pop explosion during the 60s. I have played a guitar since my teens and I know that the Beatles and the Beach Boys used advanced chords in their music because they were the more difficult ones to copy. The Stones, etc. were basic (but I still loved them). Jose Feliciano was also a master musician that I loved.
Just change the hands for George Martin and there you have it, None of the Beatles could play the piano
4:01 simply put: it’s called LSD haha
There's no need to make a case for Paul McCartney. His music already proved the case.
I’ve been a Beatles fan for like decades. I know a little of chord structures & all. I started playing the rhythm guitar when I was in med school, but then med school is really very hard, especially for a person having to study, go to the wards to treat & heal patients & attending classes which are really the backbone of a doctor. But I was able to fill in the vocals on almost all of your piano 🎹 playing because I had heard all their solo music. So opening notes, and of course chords, I’m able to identify literally all the songs that I’ve heard (yup), I’m as of December 2924, I’m 51 years old. Well my post/comment is that you’re such a genius on your own right, you actually in my honest opinion make covers of all most loads of songs, not just the Fab Four. I wish you success in your music pursuits. Cherio, Hemant Pande MD also known as Dr Hemant Pande, depending on your country of residence 😊😊
McCartney has the style of an average 4 yo....and you played it wrong...he doesnt even use his right thumb
John is better. More "feel."
really lovely video and I appreciate how deep you dig into the details of their styles. If I'm not mistaken, George and Ringo have bits of keyboard/organ playing spread across plenty of other Beatles records. e.g. Ringo's "chord stab" on I'm Looking Through You and George's Hammond organ sound on Blue Jay Way
What’s the song at 4:48?
I didn't actually know George or Ringo played piano. I guess when you're professional musicians you do pick up the rudiments of various instruments here and there from spending so much time in the studio.
Hearing about how george didnt couldnt identify an augmented chord is a good reminder not to obsess over technicality and theory when youre playing and think more about feeling (unless of course youre a teacher or something)
Why did Nicky Hopkins play on Jealous Guy and Free As A bird? Was Jealous Guy too comolex for John to play?
Quite simply John couldn’t play anywhere near the level of NH. He could have played on it of course but it wouldn’t have been anymore complex than Imagine.
@martinfinnpiano I think jealous guy on piano is much more complex than Imagine, would you not say?
This is what content I come to wish for and see on UA-cam ❤️👌
Very much appreciated!
@martinfinnpiano my pleasure Martin and a very merry Christmas to you too sir.
Totally agree. Genius.
Thank you!
-Paul: I can’t believe you didn’t mention Maybe I’m Amazed, or other post-Beatles songs. Paul was hands down the best pianist of the four. -John: my favorite was his keyboard bit on “I’m Down”. He’d start playing with his elbows and doing this faux-stride thing that was a lot of fun. Famously, during the Shea Stadium show, he was laughing the whole time. George: He does mention during that convo with Billy Preston that he loves how on a piano, all the notes are laid out in a linear format so it’s easier to visualize chord changes. Also worth noting is that in his solo career, he’d use augmented chords frequently. Ringo: that honky tonk style was used in his first solo credit with the Beatles-Don’t Pass Me By. Last fun fact: “Because” was influenced by Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata.” One day, Yoko was playing “Moonlight Sonata” on piano. John asked Yoko to play it backwards. She took some blank sheet music, wrote the progression, and sat down to play it. John based the progression to “Because” on what Yoko played. Also, Yoko was a classically trained pianist and singer (despite her predilection for screeching and making noise).
Oh come on this is nonsense. There are and were far better musicians using more complex and interesting harmonies. The Beatles were a manufactured band manipulated to combat the success of Elvis. The very idea that any of the Beatles were musically accomplished let alone 'the best singer songwriter' is just laughable. The' tunes' are from the musical George Martin. All this is obvious when one looks at the drastic change from their pre-beatles days as typical kidddie strummers at the Cavern to a slightly elevated structure under Martin (I don't but the idea they knew what half-dminished chords were) and the return to pop normality afterwards. It is therefore not at all surprising that McCartney was and is musically ignorant when the foregoing is understood. Martin remained quiet about this because to do otherwise would shatter the scam. If you really want to hear creative songwriting and use of interesting melody listen to The Singers Unlimited.
Interesting that George Martin the incredible songwriter didn’t pen a single hit before meeting the Beatles, isn’t it?
@martinfinnpiano Also interesting is Martin's entire career AFTER the Beatles. Not much there, sadly. Martin had the good sense (and skills needed) to rise to the occasion when the once-in-many-lifetimes talent like the Beatles knocked on his door.
@paulsawtell3991 Speaking of nonsense: Your entire post😂
Amazing song! As a music teacher I love the concept :) my students need to listen to this on repeat lol
Thank you for your kind words, Peter. I would be honoured. :)
Honey Pie is so creative, isn't it?
Absolutely Peter! So much in that tune. A beautiful old-tune arrangement and I love the intro too.
Loving this tutorial Martin, thanks! What a great deep dive on the genius of Paul!
Thank you Peter! When are we going to see some videos from you?

Paul # 1
Please do a Nicky video
I already did! 😁😁
Dissonance is a vastly underrated quality in music.
Wonderful video, I really enjoyed it and learned a lot! Another thing I think McCartney does incredibly well is matching stylistic touches in his melodies to the song subjects, like how "I've Just Seen A Face" almost seems to trip over itself, feeling really giddy and excited because of it. I've also seen many people criticize the lyrical quality of "Little Lamb Dragonfly" because a few measures have "la la la" as lyrics..... but the first line of the song is "I have no answer for you," so to me it's just expressing a feeling that CAN'T be expressed or rationalized!
He is a true creative genius.
John Lennon is too
Those were the days. Beautiful arrangement
He was a genius from 1962 until about 1980. After that… and ugh his lyrics after the Beatles were AWFUL. From Morris Moose and the Gray Goose to Temporary Secretary. And have you forgotten “watching the windshield wipers/gotta beware of snipers?” His Beatles lyrics are ok, but you didn’t even mention his terrible solo lyrics.
I think John described his lyrical abilities very well, once, when he said that Paul was a good lyricist who didn't think he was one, and so didn't try as often as he should. :) But if you want some great later solo McCartney, you might really like the album "Chaos and Creation in the Backyard", it's wonderful!
Great video! Thank you
i dont agree ,he is justb lucky guy only few pieces .nothing special in his music is fading
Lennon seemed to have a similar sense of melody earlier on (Julia.. Norwegian Wood ) but seemed to lose it later on . . .Whereas paul seemed to continue to write hauntingly beautiful melodies (Fool On The Hill, Eleanor Rigby , Junk ) As you say a true genious of our times
George wasn't a fan, he preferred a more minimalist Baseline
Maybe she was cleaning up the rice because she's the woman who sweeps the rice at the end of a church wedding
Thanks! Definitely will watch this over and over, slowing down, paused etc haha
Hugs from Brazil 🎉
Actually he didn't start singing with G in Yesterday, it's common misconception, listen closely to the original, he starts with F
You are barry gibb (member of the bee gees) but without hair, you look exactly like him
Thank you. Staying aliiiiiiiiiiiii-iiiiiii-iiiiiii-ive!!!
Great presentation. I thought he was familiar with theory but just didn't read music
At 72 I feel lucky to have grown up to the Beatles, eagerly awaiting their next release. You could always tell which ones were Paul's. Paperback Writer, Lady Madonna, etc. Incredible genius ! BTW, you sound very like him. Kudos.
Mozart was a genius. McCartney is above average.
He is a genius, those silly tunes like Rocky Racoon and Ob La di have brilliant backmasking
Thank you. It's so difficult to find a worthy tribute to such a genius as Paul McCartney. Your observations are enlightening and well communicated.
A couple of hundred years from now, the name Paul McCartney will join the names of Bach, Beethoven and Mozart. It's true today, but we cannot accept or admit it yet. An artist must be dead for at least a century.
Learned recently that Paul came up with and plays the haunting piano parts on Sexy Sadie. He truly elevated every song he's in.
Thank you ! Now I begin to understand what moved me when I listened to the blue and the red album as a 14 year old in a recorder shop . It was bone chilling. This was really "something else".
SO close. Got so close to the end of a Beatles video without hearing errors. George Martin explained how he came up with the ascending line in A Day in the Life, having to figure it out from John’s unclear description of what he wanted. Also, “wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door.” Look that one up. Paul explained exactly where the lyric came from and why he used it. Nothing to do with what you said. Otherwise, a fantastic breakdown of all things Paul.
I'm a 63 yo drummer, I've been professional on and off since I was 16. I'm FINALLY getting serious about learning the other instruments I've always 'played a bit of'. Primarily bass and keyboards aka piano. I recently found your Beatles videos and just love them. Always been a huge fan of the Beatles and their later solo work. In particular McCartney, all fascists of his amazing talent but his bass and his piano in particular so, your videos on these are really fascinating to me. I find them quite easy to learn from and emulate. (OK, well I love Johns piano too!) Of course, your own prodigious talents should be mentioned so, well done you! And thank you for taking the time to show us. Another other instrument Paul often plays, in particular on his solo work, is...DRUMS! My area of expertise. It's interesting as he has his studio kits set up basically like Ringo's 4 piece kits, drum sizes as well as configuration and cymbals. His drum sound is almost identical. Often using tea towels to dramatically dampen the sound as you can see Ringo doing in the GET BACK documentary. (Not my personal preference though it can sound great in context.) Even his style of playing is highly influenced by Ringo, though Paul uses a bit more flourishes than Ringo normally would. Where Paul really shines, and this shows no matter what instrument he's playing, is his dead on sense of timing. Of course Ringo is famous for this as well. Especially in the days before click tracks, this had to be a drummers #1 ability. Get the right tempo and keep it there! John too had this sense of time and I would expect that George had developed it as well just by osmosis. Though any samples of John and George's drumming that I've ever seen or heard is terrible! lol. I apologize for the long post. I was inspired by your great video! Merry Christmas and happy new year to all! JED FOX.
Great video. Thanks
this was an amazing thesis
