I love seeing someone as twp as me travelling miles and miles to collect an auction car. My last 2 were Cheltenham - Near Wrexham (3 trains) last November and last month Cheltenham - Bury St. Edmonds via London (4 trains incuding the tube). I drove a 340 back in the 1990s. One of the best balanced cars for that era that I've ever driven.
My mam had one of these 360’s years ago, very comfy and we quickly realised it was actually better than the sum of its parts, great long distance cruiser and frequently borrowed by me and my brother 👍
I had a red 360 glt was a stunner.. I was down mathewsons last week...... There's a stunning grey 3 door glt in this month's auction 17k on the clock I think. There Was a chap looking at it who had come down from your neck of the woods
Just come across this. 1986 360 GLT owner here from Aus. Looking forward to seeing a lot of (English) speaking content of this car!!! New subscriber for you, good sir!
Hi, thanks for subscribing! a few more 300 series videos here you might like - (GLT) - ua-cam.com/video/hsPjCdmxWYc/v-deo.html (GLS) - ua-cam.com/video/ODkhQqkTA7k/v-deo.html (GLE) - -ua-cam.com/video/0Rci2h2cL_c/v-deo.html
My grandad had a red, 1984 ''360 GLT Injection'', C60 CYM. Lost to the scrappage scheme. My pipe dream car. That start up sound brings back many memories!
I learnt to drive in a 1.7ltr Volvo GL and it was good fun to drive and despite its box/wedge shape it was responsive. It was also rear wheel drive (span it once! didn't actually crash into anything luckily) and had some poke.
Great little car, Volvo 300 series definitely an unsung hero of the 80s, when all the fast Ford Escorts and VX Astras got all the plaudits. Your 360 GLE, will be great, once it has got all repairs done 👍 😊
Great video 👍those 360 seats either velour or leather are incredibly hard wearing, even the foam used around the seat frame is strong & doesn't crumble like on Sierras or Cavalier's. I changed the heating element on a '86 D reg & the clips Volvo use are very strong.
A19 better road than A1 on the whole . I had a 363 . New car and kept it for a few years. Reliable and decent family car . I would have had another but had a go in a Mk2 Golf Gti and realised what I was missing in my life !
Congrats! Frankly a totally different (and superior) car to the 340s. Proper Volvo 2.0, real transmission box. Had this for several years in the 90’s. Recommend upgrading to bigger alloy wheels and rubber. Makes it a proper drive. Keep the great vids coming.
I had a 343 and 2 360 GLEs, really good cars. I bought them all at 2 years old and sold at 4. All carburettors. After I sold them, they all rusted quite quickly. Never understood why given Volvo's durability. When you do the water pump seals or cambelt, it's radiator out, and that is grille and bumper off, as it's mounted in front of the panel. Dead easy.
Good car Chris, I would have driven it back to Fife from Pickering, providing I knew that the timing belt was reasonably new. Those 2 litre engines would get you anywhere as long as the timing belt has been replaced. My dad's C reg 360 GLE timing belt snapped right on the 4 years anniversary when I had already bought the genuine Volvo replacement for fitting. It bent a valve and when being repaired we had the double cylinder head gasket modification done to allow it to run on unleaded fuel.
Another great video Chris. Best back up vehicle you'll ever get despite no tow bar 😊. Keen to see what you unearth wen you start pulling it apart. Sills may tell a tale.
I learned to drive in a 340 CVT, a Mustang and a Carina II before passing the test in a brand-new 440. I´ve wanted what they used to disparagingly call a Renault Volvo ever since that day in 1994.
The Volvo 300 series was a transformation from the Daf variomatic. Volvo brought daf cars out and rebadged the daf as a Volvo and got rid of the CVT transmission. Interesting fact the 300 series has the gearbox bolted to the back axle. I loved my 360s had a white saloon and red 3door GLT.
Had a silver 84 GLE saloon (A211CUX) in the family in the 90's - earlier B19A with 92hp and Stromberg carb - from 37k miles to well over 140,000 as I recall. Tin worm got the better of it, but what a comfortable cruiser- no power steering so was heavy to park but just lapped up the miles. It went everywhere with us kids, and apart from one torn carb diagram it never failed to get home. The Redblock really made the 360 what the 340 should have been with the massive low down torque and high gearing - a good thing really as it had lost interest much more than 4500rpm, but an indicated 100mph was 3500rpm. Would dearly have loved a late 89 GLT hatch with PAS. The thing in the day was to transplant the B230FT from a 740 or 760 = instant 180hp from the factory and many many smiles.
I started as a Volvo Salesman at Linn Glasgow in 1988 and remember these well. What you want-if you can find one is a 363 GLT- but in 88 we only had the 5 door for sale. Might have to back to '84?
Great purchase! I'd love to own one of these too, also for nostalgic reasons I guess. Personally I like the spec of this example. I am VERY surprised though that it's carbureted, but typical for a British car I guess, in Holland the GLE designation is reserved for the top spec fuel injected model. Also seems very odd to me that you're able to pass an MOT without working odometer.... One things for sure, you can't kill the motor in these, extremely reliable engines, pulls nice and full of character.
I had a white 343 DL(?) 1.7. Surprising quick. Like driving a bus while sitting in an armchair. On tyres close to the limit on ice I fishtailed and missed a cyclist by millimetres. Heart stopping fun ! Fun fact : Don't jack up the back using the diff as my Volvo main dealer did or it will leak without end.
Did you get off the train at thirsk and then by road to Pickering it’s a nice part of the world we drive through Pickering on our way to Scarborough greetings from South Lanarkshire
my first volvo was a 340 1.4gl.........2nd - 340 1.7 gle............volvo 480 (gorgeous paris blue).......volvo 850 estate........then a v70.few of them....currently on a v40 d4 lux nav..........300 series were built like tanks and easy to work on yourself.
@@markcollins457 it was essentially.a DAF design Daf 66/ Volvo 343 which Volvo took over the car side from Daf around 1976.( Daf truck business continues today). Engine on the 1400 (343) were courtesy of the Renault 12, the later came the 1721 cc ohc unit from the Renault 21 in 1986.. These 360 were VERY desirable because the RED block Volvo very own design ,very torquey + ligh ( though strong ) body+ rear mounted gear box ( Volvos own =lots of RWD fun. 😁
@@mikemartin2957I believe Volvo revised it twice ? During its life, the 2nd revision possibly in 87 or something…that’s the one where Volvo replaced the entire dashboard. The original 340 only had CVT automatic transmission I think…and obviously very old, crude version. People generally didn’t like it hence Volvo offered a manual transmission as well when they took it over. Has to be remembered, these cars especially the 360 were not budget cars back in their day. This wasn’t in the same pool as say a little ford fiesta.
Haha I live in Falkirk I've got an old 1998 E11 Corolla that's due an MOT 20th December, if it fails but I put alot of work into it hoping for a pass you could probably take it off my hands and give it proper treatment 🙏🏻
Had a 340 1.7 it went through aluminium propshafts like they were going out of fashion. Think the 2.0 Used a better locking mechanism on the prop shaft to prevent wear to the splines on The prop shaft. I think root cause was soft/worn rubber bushings for the de dion axle and possibly the engine mounts. Heavy steering, and rear higher than the front didn’t think it was a good car.
The 1.4 & 1.7 used a naked prop spinning away under the car - the 2.0's all used a torque tube with a steel prop inside bolted to the clutch housing and front of the gearbox - which was why they handled considerably better than the 340's. - and the gearchange didnt move around as you came on and off the power.

They built these 360 years ago?
There was a GLT and a GLE version that were often used in racing in the Netherlands (360 NOT-Modena-cup)
Sadly now there aren't many left...
I turned one down for 50 quid, then found out it was rwd and hot Renault engines fit, silly me

Yes, they were very pokey !
I have never seen one of these Volvo's before. What an interesting looking car. Can't wait to see the restoration on this one.
I had a 360 in the 90s , brilliant cars, good luck with the project, looking forward to the next update.
I've had a 1981 340 GL, two GLTs great car

Loved this Chris...cheers buddy, enjoying the journey...
You should compare volvo notes with Geoff buys cars...😂😂
Bring on part 2 Chris - looking forward to seeing this one be brought back to life 👍
Had one years ago absolutely loved it the best towing car plenty of grunt Volvo reliability built strong lovely motor
I loved my 340 gl. Drove it to a scrap yard with 225k miles on it.

I had a 360 2.0 in the late 90's before i got a license. They like to spin the wheels. if wet asphalt. 3rd gear no problem on old tires ofc 😛

You say it's tired but it looks pretty good to me... I agree with the seals but other than that it looks great and high spec one too!

Had a 360 GL myself- great car to be honest, very comfy, and quite lively as well!

I5s not unhealthy it's like you quite rightly saud: "nostalgia!" :-)
Nice. Gave me memories from our own family. It was first Western car in our possesion. Red 340 with 1.6 Renault diesel engine. :)
I’ve got a picture of this car on my phone from when I went to view the auction! Was nearly tempted myself… Enjoy!

I have a 360 GL in the same green colour. Love it! The interior in mine is beige....... I don't love that...
They’re great wee cars, that one did well to get you home. Off to a good start!
What a nice merc, definitely do a review 👍👍
Probably more reliable than its successor, the 440.

They didn't ditch the cvt gearbox, you could get a 340 with a cvt right up to the end of production.

Worth replacing the fuel filter as well
Looking forward to part 2 !
I had a late model 360GLT 5 door with power steering F reg
Ahh the special GLE, It stood for Generally Lacking Enthusiasm.
I always like the car and think the coulor is the best it.

i had an 340 diesel an petrol it is an rearly good buid car in mercedes and big volvos it has an transaxle and is an very good drift car
These are rare now. Folks had a 340gl. Nice car but servicing was super expensive.
shouldnt be expensive.....none of my volvos have ever ever been expensive to service..........your folks garage was expensive for run of mill parts.
'When you shouldn't HAVE hit bid'!!!!!!
Looking at the mileage I suspect the right most digit is actually tenths so the mileometer is reading 8755.3 (probably 108755 or even 208755)
Another cracking video pal as usual, whats happening with the c2
Wasn't this model a joint effort with Volvo an another company, i kind of remember something on those lines.
Renault. this one got a real Volvo motor not the Renault 1.7 and 1.4? 340's got the Renault shite

How much was it ?
I used to have a 340, 2.0, GLE, Whats the diference between a 340 and a 360?
340 had a Renault engine- 1.7-1.4, 360 has a 2.0 Volvo engine.

Anybody else see "Fanny" Lol
Come to think of it- yes 😂
burnt valve?
@@glen3468 or sticking valve ! The more the stem gets lube trickling down it will become ok. Wynn s or Redex is great for this.

"Shouldn't HAVE". "Shouldn't HAVE hit bid".
These weren't particularly great cars at the time
Why would you buy a car with such an appalling MOT history and a mileage which hasn't updated since 2010 ?
Change your medication !😏
I had one in silver great car , id have another
sills rotted out on that had one in 92 you should watched pre vid on it b for auction he said they look roted out on it
wot you mean rotted out in 92? when it was 4 years old? lol
I did watch the video and was aware it needed welding.
