Worth mentioning, if you are sharing a mooring post with another boat it is good manners to tie your rope under the other fellows. You never know, he might want to leave earlier than you next morning.
Many years ago whilst visiting Norwich overnight I suspected some students intended to untie all the ropes during g the night as a practical joke. My solution, lower the mud anchor on the side away from the jetty. Awoke the next morning to find we were still in Norwich while others were not so lucky. On lad I spoke to later found he had drifted 5 miles down stream!
Good advice Derek. I'm always a bit wary of mooring in Norwich so only tend to stay for the day which is a shame really.
Very good, we have done some narrowboat holidays and I bought a length of rope to practice the correct knots. If we get a boat on the Broads I will be all set. Thanks.
Good to hear and see you soon on the broads.
Thanks for watching.
Just bought a boat and now have it at Brundall . Was a bit surprised at how many different ways people had tied up .Glad to say I've moored up with three lines ( as you showed ) especially as I'm moored stern on and have an outboard being a Viking 26 .Previously only hired cruising yachts . The third ( spring line ) certainly keeps the outboard away from the walkway . Will certainly watch your videos from now on as they are so clear and well produced . Thanks .
Hi John. Thanks for the comment and I'm glad the video has been useful to you. You will find the extra spring line very useful in the tidal conditions that you will find further down towards Great Yarmouth especially.
Thanks Mike, that was very helpful. You showed how easy it is to do the mooring hitches.
We're off again on the Broads in.a couple of weeks, can't wait :)
Sorry I didn't get to reply in time for your trip. Hope you had a great time. :-)
Thanks for the explanation
Thanks for watching 🙂
@@boatermike no problem. I haven't been up to the broads yet
Interesting video. On our canal boat I was taught to tie-off to the boat not the post. Is it different with GRP cruisers or Norfolk Broads?
Hi Nigel. I have little to no experience on canals but
on the Broads you tend to find most people tie off to the post, but not always.
I do sometimes tie off to the boat. Nothing to do with construction methods just with the hardware (we can have bollards, rings, cleats etc) that you have available at that location. Also on the conditions of course. A high tide could mean a loop lifts off a short post (ask me how I know).
There are no hard and fast rules here, just what works at the time.
@@boatermike Thanks for the reply.
I've been boating 50yrs Mike, that is not the correct spring line.
Hi Dennis. It's not meant to be all technically correct. It's to give newcomers and first time hirers something to use if they find the tide is pushing their boats around.
Thanks for watching.
Why is your bow rope taking up another mooring spot. Surely you can tie to post next to your stern
Hi. Thanks for watching. I was trying to demonstrate how I would do it in an area with quite a large tidal rise and fall where you would need to keep the lines long. Other boats would just overlap lines so the spaces would be basically the same.
Boatyards never show you to do 2 half hitches.
And it is a very easy and useful "hitch" to know. Thanks for watching.
