How to build a Modern Coat Rack
This tutorial will show you how to build a modern coat rack. This modern coat rack design made from Black Walnut wood is both stylish and functional. Whether you're looking for a coat rack in your foyer or mudroom and whether your interior design style is modern farmhouse or craftsman, this coat rack is sure to fit in just fine.
I've seen a few versions of this around, most have staggered blocks and a backing piece. I wanted to find a way to do without the backing piece and have the blocks even so the appearance was a solid piece of wood when the rack is not in use.

Would it make it easier to flip if we use a metal rod? I am curious what is keeping them in the vertical position and not leaning when not in use? The tight fit?

Nice build. If I may make one suggestion. Next time cut ALL the two inch blocks then ALL the one inch blocks. Not constantly inserting the spacer block for every i other block. 😉

He did it like this so the wood grain would all line up and flow together. Its the little details.

A planer doesn’t square up a board it will just mimic whatever is on the other side, use a jointer for all sides except ends

Using you round over router bit you are going the wrong direction - should be anti-clockwise. Good tips for the build tho.

Thanks! Good succinct video! Question though, how do the blocks stay in closed position, purely by friction? I was wondering whether I could drill the dowel hole closer to the front face of the coat rack so that its center of gravity would keep it rotating towards the wall (and closing it), but I think it might interfere with how far the block can open. After finishing this, do you think there's a better cut to make for a good opening angle instead of cutting the 45 and then trimming the corner?

Very nice! Quick tip: get some dowel marking pins and pop them into your keyhole slots. Tape them in with masking tape, then just place your piece against the wall, find the right height and level, then push. The pins will dimple the wall exactly where you need to drill.

You used so many tools for a simple rack and then inserted 48 magnets in it just to hold knives. This seems way too excessive.
