This time we're doing an analysis of the (infamous) Jungle Cubs encounter between Kaa and Mowgli. Apologies to those who likely expected me to follow with the second encounter, I ran into technical troubles (text wouldn't be visible with the daytime backgrounds) so I instead did this one as a sort of tech demo to see if the text is readable for everyone. Shanti is a very interesting character tbh. She's a perfect foil to Mowgli in the sequel. What's interesting about this encounter is how, as it was with Mowgli, her personality plays into her being entranced. She's been raised to be a perfect obedient daughter who never questions authority AND she's so dependent on her comfort zone that she is absolutely terrified of the jungle simply because of how unpredictable wildlife can be. In fact, in her deleted solo song, "Braver" (which should have stayed in the film), she heavily implies that the reason she went after Mowgli alone is because she wanted to prove to herself that she's brave enough to overcome adversity. And this encounter is essentially Shanti's exposure therapy. Her worst nightmare coming true. Because after this scene, she is more confident in the jungle. But speaking of the scene itself, it's interesting that her obedient mindset is what allows Kaa to not just control her, but practically puppeteer her. Beautiful dreams are flooding into her mind and she can't seem to bear closing her eyes, as indicated at 4:47 with the "please don't go" look. Although Shanti is very intelligent and mature, she simply lacks Mowgli's iron will and is not able to give a speck of resistance as a result. And when she falls to the ground, we see that she is so incredibly entranced that it takes several seconds for her to wake up. I also find it interesting that Kaa is more sadistic to Shanti than he ever was to Mowgli. He brushes back her hair as if he's admiring her beauty and then whispers into her ear that he's going to eat her. Honestly, Mowgli and Shanti and their relationship were the best things about this movie. It was great seeing their character development.

    After so many years, I still get a boner every time I see how kaa's colored rings so suddenly change Shanti's mood, going from feeling totally terrified to being filled with so much bliss that she can't do anything but put a goofy grin on her cute face

    • @karimion2157
      @karimion2157 Місяць тому

      @@goldenheart9503 I mean, it is pretty rushed and it more or less repeats the same conflict of the original and it has only one good song and Baloo regresses to his hedonistic old self even though he learned so much about responsibility in the first film. Plus, Ranjan and Lucky were annoying asf. They should have used the original movie's early drafts as inspiration, where Buldeo the hunter forces Mowgli to lead him to a treasure chamber. Granted, that would mean Baloo would have a smaller role, but at least it would have a fresher story. They even could have had Buldeo as Shanti's stepfather. That being said, the movie had good animation, voice acting and it did a very great job developing Mowgli and Shanti. And gave them very organic chemistry and a beautiful relationship. Seriously, they're probably the healthiest Disney couple in history. The movie is not as bad as Hunchback 2, Return of Jafar or Mulan 2, but it's not as good as Lion King 2, Aladdin 3 and Cinderella 3.

    I don't think Shere Khan kept his eyes lidded to avoid being hypnotized. I'm pretty sure that was just a symptom of his smug overconfidence. Yes, he shut his eye as Kaa tried to trance him, but I took it to mean he found it annoying, kind of like how even a Taylor Swift song one enjoys just becomes irritating when you're in a bad mood.

    There you go once again providing us with yet another thoughtful analysis. There was always something about the way Shere Khan just being so intimidating to even Kaa that I find satisfying from a narrative standpoint, because if this tiger can make someone like Kaa worry, it showcases that he really is bad news. Also, I never put too much thought into why Mowgli woke up this time and just assumed it was from the coils wrapped around him coming loose. But you make a good point about Mowgli also stirring possibly from the hot jungle air, something you probably would notice if you're perpetually shirtless like Mowgli. As for their final interaction, I feel like neither Mowgli nor Kaa were thinking too rationally here. In Mowgli's case, it's because Baloo's treachery was still very recent, and until he was hypnotized again, Kaa did seem like he was trying to help him. As for Kaa, he was clearly not thinking straight because he just got embarrassed by the jungle boy again; he had the perfect chance to hypnotize Mowgli one more time and he didn't do it. One thing's for sure, whenever Kaa gets his next meal, it will never be Mowgli.

    What a great breakdown as usual. The way Kaa is on the backfoot. He tried to keep a sense of control but knows Shere Khan is more than he can muster. Still, he tries. Something he must at least work with to keep up the charade. Poor Kaa can never manage a decent meal. Maybe one of the Wolves can be a fine meal sometime @3@

    12:20 Mowgli is not dumb. You should know by now that it takes a few seconds for Kaa's hypnosis to trap the victim depending on their willpower. Mowgli is very strong-willed and he knows that. He also knows that if Kaa tries to hypnotize him, he can easily shut his eyes now that he doesn’t have to worry about the coils. He also has never seen Kaa being anything but pleasant to him, so he didn't expect him to be so direct.

  • @karimion2157

    If you're planning on analyzing Shanti's encounter, keep this in mind: you can notice when Kaa hypnotizes Shanti, he's not just controlling her. He's practically puppeteering her. Shanti had been raised to be a perfect obedient daughter who never questions authority. That alone makes her susceptible to a mere fraction of Kaa's hypnotic power. And that's not even mentioning the fact that she was literally facing her worst nightmare at the time, which completely nullifies any chance of an ounce of resistance.

Given he's never once seen another human, especially a female near the same age as him, I've always thought it was curiosity at something new that was similar but different to himself. Especially since Shanti was singing with what he believed was a lovely voice that surfaced several new feelings within him.
