Kayaking for giant red drum in the Neuse River, North Carolina
With hurricane Helena on its way, Dontrell and I go after old drum in the Neuse River. After repeated outings and getting skunked, the third time’s a charm. The bulls like it rough and it seemed to make the difference.

Hurricane Debby has really affected the water salinity of the Neuse River. We went out after old drum but with no luck. After the wind died, the blues started giving away their location and the fun began.

Bass, drones and slo-mo at Falls Lake, NC

How to find bull reds on the Neuse River
Переглядів 10 тис.2 роки тому
Late August and early September is when you need to get on the Neuse River or Pamlico Sound in North Carolina to find these beautiful big drum. Finding them is the hard part, but I will give you a clue. They come looking for love but are always hungry. Big fish need lots of food, so if you find the bait, you find the fish.

My goodness man what an awesome time. Red fish is on my bucket list to catch. Definitely put a lot of quality editing into your video and it shows! Great video keep it up! Looking forward to seeing more 🤘🎣
O an how did I forget to mention…that drag rippin!!! Omg! Unreal fight man!
@@JayPeaOutdoors the tug is the drug!!! My son, who is older than your kids, says he finds my vids boring. So I leaned on his advice and you could say he even art directed me on this edit. It didn’t hurt that I got the two camera footage from my buddy. You get more options with four cameras!
Great video, Steve! I'll have to get out with you next year so that I can get my first popping cork bull!
What do you have wrapped on your pole and why?
@@michaelzabriskie2105 it’s a float. Usually they are kept on with Velcro straps. However, those straps can grab your braid, so I wrapped them in electrical tape. If my rods were to go overboard, they would float.
Thanks for the sub. I’ve got some new vids in the works, so stay tuned…
Apparently between minnesot and oriental
I try not to disclose all my spots. Some people get really bent out of shape about that. I can see their point. But, I've got clues throughout all my vids. If you've been out there before, you can tell where it is. Yeah, some spots are better than others, but the important thing is to get out there and explore. These fish move around daily and there is tons of water you can cover.
Are y'all fishing near oriental or newburn?
Very nice. You actually talked to a buddy of mine one day last week when we were there. I was on the other side of the bridge in Dawsons. I told him I thought it was you when I saw your ECU flag. Maybe we’ll see you next year when we’re there.
Small world! I'll be out there again next year for sure. That was my last try for the bulls. You were there for the week. How did you two do? Next year, I suggest you guys get a place mid to late September.
@@SteveOllice we caught a ton of blues between 25-30” and caught flounder, small reds and a black drum at the bridge. The trout weren’t in there either. We’re planning on coming around the 2nd week in September.
Great video Steve! I Really enjoyed it. I was there that same week, couldn't find the bait balls. !st trip on the Neuse, I learned a ton. Cant wait to get back!
@@bruce7992 I think hurricane Debby really goofed up the bait. I didn’t find bait balls like in previous years. Hell, same issue last year! It’s tough finding the bait AND fish on a kayak. I tend to cover 6 miles or more when I’m out there.
Great video dude. Glad you both got them. 💪
Appreciate the support, finally everything came together for this vid.
Awesome video Steve!!!!!!!!
Nice, did you use a drone for some of the shots.
That’s a Insta 360 X3. It’s like 3 cameras in one. It looks like a drone because it eliminates the selfie stick. Awesome technology.
“I look like a Diddy party” 😂
Awesome video! Where do you guys put in? I'm looking for a good spot. I am in Greensboro, but I try to get down a couple of times a year for those awesome reds!
Try Oriental, Dawson’s and the South River launches. As you can see, it’s hit or miss but worth it when you combine time and place.
@@SteveOllice, thanks, I will check them out! I really enjoyed watching you guys hook up on those bulls!
Good video y’all got on em
Thanks man! Took a long time to edit this one.
Get em Steve
NICE!!!!
Some criticism/advice: video should've started at 3:00. I video just needs to be condensed a lot. You have some great stuff and then you have a lot of filler that can be removed without compromising the excellent fishing that was done here. Hope that's helpful!
@@chillyprotocol thanks for the feedback! I’ll have 7 hours of footage and my biggest challenge is how much to condense. It seems to be difficult for me to let go of some footage, as if I think it’s important for the story telling or giving the audience information. Hard to decide if I’m just informing or entertaining.
@@SteveOllice That's how you know you're a creator, when you struggle to let go of what you've made. I think I learn more on the side of entertain, but you can honestly do both if you're smart about it. On the next thing you make, with every scene or section try to ask yourself if it's really necessary or if it's taking time away from the other scenes that you really really want your viewer to see. Think about telling the viewer a story with each video and remove anything that doesn't help to tell that story.
@@chillyprotocol thanks again. This is giving me a few ideas on how to approach my next vid.
Outstanding video!!
Thanks!!! One of my best days on the water.
What a great video Steve! I'll be on the Neuse next week...
Let me know how you do! I got into em last week and have a new vid coming soon.
Where was that launch at sir
HIt me up on Facebook and I'll tell you. I'm under the same name.
@@SteveOllice it’s ok. I’m not on facebook
Great video
Huge thanks, Marco! Making fishing vids is fun, stumbling on a feeding frenzy is awesome, but comments like yours are the best! Thanks for watching.
Is that a public kayak launch? Good video.
It is on the river side. It is private on the other side of the road.
Just got back from coast today and heading back tomorrow. Past 3 days went after bulls on corks. No luck. I think all the night time bait soakers are sore mouthing them so much they arent biting during the day...idk but its been tough.
The old drum bite has been tough. The menhaden just aren't up in the river with all the fresh water. The different salinities show up on your fishfinder and the bait stick to the lower water levels. People are catching them on popping corks, but you need to be in a boat to cover enough water to find them. And if you find them, another boat can come through and shut the bite down. Good luck out there!
Good video , stuffs dope
Thanks Doug! It's been a grind, but I've been trying.
15:03 never seen that before
I hadn't either! Took a while to figure out what was going on, what where those fish doing. Probably would never had happened if the water wasn't so smooth and hot.
Them big blues are so much fun
I used to get really annoyed at them, stealing baits, but I was ready for them this time! They came through when the reds were AWOL.
Look at them all blowing up next to your feet jeez
Hey man, maybe don't disclose your specific locations. Tia
Chopper blues star t at about 7lbs
I got into the chompers the other day. Check out my latest video. I think you'll like it.
So cool using the drone to get your bait out there. That is illegal in NC, I think.
Ding batters
I resemble that remark...
Pretty flounder , good video Steve
Thanks Doug!
That 360 view is dope
It's like 2 or 3 cameras in one. Only beef is that it looks low res around the edges. But that isn't enough to not use it.
Steve, this was from last year? when we had a flounder season? :)
2023, yeah it took me that long to get this vid out.
Are you sure that's even legal? lolololol Way too much fun for one trip. KILLER DAY!
@@weekender38 this trip absolutely ruined me. Gold standard day. It’s just time and place with a bunch of luck.
Great video, what time of year was this video?
I forget the actual day but it was during flounder season 2021, so that makes it some time during the first two weeks of September. I’ve been chasing this day ever since! I’ve learned that it’s all about finding a school. Not easy. There is a lot of water to cover.
2:30 beautiful
I'm always trying to get that tail slap!
1:06 when it jumped I said “ yeah baby “
If you know, you know!
Digging the music, some nice bass too
Thanks! I had this as an idea for my channel trailer for a while.
@@SteveOllice hell yeah
Video is dope , really good audio , visuals , and fish . Where Cayuga New York ?
Cayuga is one of the Finger Lakes. We have the Star Cottage on that point. Amazing fishing in June.
@@SteveOllice i watched Greg Blanchard fish there , I love his videos I’ll always have a soft spot for bass . My philosophy if you’re good at bass everything else translates. Make some more videos man I really like your content it’s dope
@@DougieBFishingI discovered Greg when searching YT vids on Cayuga years ago. He mostly launches across the lake from us. Kristine Fischer fished a tournament in the same exact spot as I filmed here last year. Our cottage is in the background. MLF had a tournament and were all round the cottage until the word got out that giant smallmouth were at the south end of the lake. I’m going to film a smallmouth vid this spring.
