Ambient Modular Musician - Dreaming in Control Voltage
In The Field - Mont Saint Michel
Hello there!
For the third installment of this In The Field series, we go to Mont Saint Michel on the west coast of France a beautiful place, well worth a visit!
I was inspired by the beautiful architecture and resonatory nature of the grand halls, and wanted to try and capture a slice of that using some vocal choral samples on the OP-1f!
I recorded the piece onto the @teenageengineering TP-7 before manipulating the motorised tape reel in playback for some of those tape like effects and sounds!
As always, please sit back and relax and enjoy!!

Hello there! In this second instalment of In The Field we’re in Saint Emillion, a place in France famed for its amazing wine which we sampled happily on our visit and enjoyed strolling around the old streets, it’s a beautiful town, well worth a visit and an amazing place to be able to sit and contemplate and then compose! As you may be able to tell this was filmed quite a few months ago, but th...

Hello there! In this first instalment of this ‘In The Field’ series I experiment with some sample instruments, using the pitch glide/slide as well as the transport controls going between forward and reverse on the tape. This piece was made up of a few improvised takes overlaid, with some ‘live’ improvised playing over the top. Again I didn’t want to focus too much in these videos about the spec...

Hello there! In this video I improvised a short piano piece, and then I recorded a few vocal takes over the top of it, before loading the whole recording onto the @teenageengineering OP-1 Field and using the sample drum synth to chop up parts of the track and I had a go at making a couple of short beats using these chopped up samples, again all just a bit of fun and exploration, so I hope you...

I love what you do : simple but well thought. Color and light are top notch 👌
Thanks for your kind words! I’m trying to make pleasing music and improve my music & filming skills, so I’m glad you appreciate my work! 👍😀
That was AWESOME! 👏😎
Thanks you! Very kind!! 👍😀
If I don't have an OP-1f, or a TX-6, do you feel I could still record full pieces onto the TP-7? I really enjoy the idea of overdubbing on it, as well as recording L/R jams from my studio as a base.
@@Ancaja123 yeh I think so, I’m not sure I’ve ever used it for overdubbing, not yet, but it can record three separate stereo tracks simultaneously, so you could mix them after if you wanted, I’ve used this for recording guitar & vocals separately for song demos and it works well for that, there may be better recorders for you for the price, depending on your needs etc, but for me, I fell in love with the design, and the motorised tape wheel is great, I’m sure there are more capable recorders for the price, but if you take into consideration side, the beauty of the design etc… personally I love it, hope that’s helpful for you!!
@ I have an OB-4, and the slowing/speeding up varispeed type stuff is the biggest draw for me to the TP-7. Though I wish you could save/bounce down recordings to a different speed (as far as I know you can’t). I also love the form factor, and knowing that the sound quality is ace is a plus. I have a studio with 32 inputs going at once, but I often don’t like mixing/recording in the DAW, and have recorded countless things to tape just L/R out of my mixer. I feel this could be my portable tape machine. My other option is my Tascam DR-80 which I’ve used for years, but something about it doesn’t exactly invite me to record.
Yeh, So you can record and then playback in a fixed speed (1x, half speed, quarter speed) which I’ve made use of, and the kind of tape emulation from the motor reel is really pleasing too, might be interesting to record three separate sends from the DAW, like drums/melodic/vocals - if you then wanted to mix them maybe? But yeh as a small, intuitive and well designed recorder- I love it! If the price isn’t too big a barrier, it may be worth considering (I’m always hesitant to outright recommend something as I don’t know your exact needs etc, and the cost/performance is always a big consideration for studio gear IMO!)
@ the cost is high, and something I can’t afford right now for sure. A studio desk is my next purchase and much more worth it. However, the OB-4 was pricey, and it might be one of the most inspiring most used objects in my home. But just for clarification you can play back at a fixed speed but you can’t bounce/export it out at that speed right?
@@Ancaja123 yeh absolutely there are many more useful purchases for sure- although I agree, for me all my TE gear is the most inspiring and as a result gets the most use, so that is deffo worth mentioning, yes I think that’s right, you can change playback speed but you can’t export at half speed say, I suppose you could play it back into the daw at half speed (not ideal though!) I have played it back into the DAW though, to record the tape like sounds from the motorised tape reel, which sounds great and adds some nice fluctuations for sure, hope I could be helpful, good luck!
cannot wait for full video 😊 🙏
Thanks! Nothing planned quite yet, I want to get to know the XY and feel more confident with it, before I make a video & piece, working on it now though!! 👍😀
If you are this creative you don't need likes.
Thanks! I just try and make videos & music I like, and try and improve something every chance I get 👍
sounded great in use here. Was there any other effects used after the Op1?
Thanks! Nothing apart from perhaps a slight bit of tape-like flutter from the TP-7 👍
What a track👌it is just stunning 👏

great video and very informative. I was wondering do you find the 10 second buffers on arbhar to be limiting compared to the comparatively "massive" reels on morphagene. (even with 6 buffers on arbhar its still way smaller than a reel can be) I already own a morphagene but agree that they are different enough to warrant having both. I'm just a little hung up on the 10 second thing. cheers.
@@MmostlyRandom Thanks, glad you found it useful! So the last buffer on Arbhar is all of the buffers in one, which gives you longer to work with if you do want one longer buffer, I think they’re both useful in different ways, being able to switch between different buffers easily is a plus of Arbhar I think, you can do this on Morphagene too by cutting up your reel and moving through vastly different segments of buffers with organise… but the differing controls of each module means I end up using them in different ways, maybe I view Arbhar more as a alternative to Beads say, these modules do all crossover I think- but for me Morphagene can do a lot more sound exploration (the longer buffer size is a big plus, but also the way the controls work) and sure you can do similar ish things with the other two, but I think the controls may be less precise for that kind of work? If that makes sense! From memory I don’t think you can time stretch the same way on the other two, I love using all three in conjunction a lot, passing audio back and forth between them- If I had to pick one to start with it would definite be Morphagene I’d say, and between the other two it depends on your preference… apologies for the long reply, hopefully you find it useful! 👍
@@megamodularis thanks the detailed reply is much appreciated (I didn't realise that the last buffer was all of them together, so thats 60 seconds total which is much more appealing). I'm seriously considering an Arbhar and that little snippet of info is VERY helpful. sure there is crossover with the 2 modules but I think they both have strengths and weaknesses so will compliment each other well. (I really like the way arbhar smears and sprays the grains in ways that morphagene can't)
@@MmostlyRandom yes absolutely, the granular element is definitely different (and more similar to Beads IMO) and there is a probability pot, for forward or reverse grains which is nice, also the visual feedback is great too and unique to Arbhar- a plus for Beads is that you can change the audio quality to give you a longer or shorter buffer, for me Beads is more of an effect that I think always sounds great, whereas Morph & Arbhar are more sound manipulators, explorers and designers- the immediacy of the controls of Morphagene is the winner for me, but I think you’re right that they compliment each other very well!
@@megamodularis yeah I have a monsoon (clouds clone with extra controls) beads is very similar to monsoon in how it operates (so similar that I never felt the need to upgrade to a beads, I felt that beads was more just an interface upgrade than anything ground breaking compared to clouds and the clones already had the interface issues covered) I agree beads/clouds is more of an effect because it's doing it's thing in realtime on live audio where morph and arbhar are manipulating already recorded sounds. anyways I ordered an Arbhar last night and your videos were a big help in bringing me to that decision.
Ah great! Then you have all bases covered- and yeh agree, I have a clouds clone and Beads too actually (I think it is an improvement in a couple of ways, but if pressed I’m not sure I could say what exactly- maybe that you can go from grains to delay seamlessly?) but they’re both great and it’s deffo overkill for me to have both. Ah great, well I hope you like it and enjoy making music with it! It’s a big responsibility to me, I don’t want to make videos that overly encourage GAS, yet I haven’t properly ‘reviewed’ anything really, just want to make videos & music with the gear I have and hopefully show you something new & interesting! But I’m glad my videos helped in some part to you making an informed decision! 👍😀
Very nice and calm piece, i love it 👍

Such a cool idea! Beautiful
Thank you! Really glad you enjoyed it! 😀
So all the sounds we hear are sampled from the sculpture? I'm guessing you must have issues in that the sculpture must have several notes sounding all at any one time? If so do they harmonise? Has it been made to a chord/scale or is it just random? This isn't critical in any shape or form but just curious about the sculpture as not been there (yet!) and in principle sounds a wonderful concept and I really like what you are doing bringing it to life - great idea for a project, well done. Nice & interesting video and music - liked
Thank you! So actually unfortunately no, there is a lot that you hear which is directly from the sculpture, but first I shaped it through a filter, so that I could select which frequencies we’d hear, or cut out the birds etc, then I decided to run these sounds through Rings- a resonator, which has an input which then dramatically alters the sound, but I think you can hear the rings sound if you’re familiar with it.. you’re right that the sculpture is tuned in some kind of harmonic scale but I have no idea what, and on its own it sounds pretty dissonant, so it needed a lot of sculpting and help to get these results I think! you could say the source is from the field recordings, but in this piece it definitely needed the help of Rings, and some good effects processing, reverb and granulation etc- if you haven’t already, the first video about this sculpture should have a bit more info and has some of the raw sound from the recordings as well, if your interested! Thanks for the kind words & support, glad you enjoyed the video! 👍😀
Perfectly wonderful 😊
Thank you! Kind words! 😀

another great video. i wish i had the courage to attempt a build of odds and euclidian, but i know it would end in disaster - i dont seem to be able to find them anywhere as pre built modules
@@particle-dots thank you! Anyone know if "The Angel of the North" generates audible effects?
Not that I know of, although you could still go and gather field recordings for later use, in these recordings I liked using the birdsong too!
Sounds awesome, cant believe you only have 900 subscribers!
Thank you! Slowly making my way up to 1000! It’s been great fun making videos so far, definitely still learning loads and always trying to improve, and figure out what directions I want to go in! So glad you enjoyed the video & music! 😀👍
I'm from the uk & I never knew about this, the singing ringing tree! So does it make all sorts of sounds depending on wind speed and directions? I like the idea of what you are doing with the sound too. I have a korg minilogue (a sort of modern version of the moog) and I love using that in my recordings, manually changing sounds etc, and I have various synths & pad but never really played around with sampling sounds and working with those. That was a really beautiful result you got there, inspiring - nice video - liked
Thank you! Yeh it’s quite cool! I think it has different pitches from different lengths of steel, it generally is a bit discordant, not too sure what the actual harmonic relationships are between the different pipes, and yes! It definitely varies depending on wind speed and direction, so it’s always shifting and changing, usually quite low in pitched but sprinkled in with the higher notes too, it’s quite a pleasant place to go visit in a nice position too! I made good use of sculpting the sounds with a filter and choosing which slice to play on the Morphagene too, really glad you enjoyed the video!! 👍😀 hope you catch the part 2 coming soon!
@@megamodularis I will have to give it a visit ...on a windy day though! Thanks for reply, I never sub anyone if they are above replying but that was great (hey, helping you get near that magic 1000 subs!) I think we are on a very roughly similar music appreciation although my music isn't as technically experimentally clever as yours! Look forward to part 2 🙂
@@NepenthesSloth Thank you! And thanks for subscribing! Absolutely! Worth a visit for sure, I’m definitely not above replying, for me that’s a big part of the fun, meeting other musicians and people interested in this kind of stuff, I try and reply to every comment, unless I miss them, or they’re overly negative (and I don’t have anything to add by replying) that’s only been once or twice though! That’s kind, I think as long as it sounds good to you, you’re doing the right thing! 👍😀
How wonderful - the sculpture is intriguing and these sounds are rather special. Your comments very helpful too. I'm going to keep an eye out for the next one! 👍👍
