  • Hello there!
    Here’s a video which is a bit of a walkthrough of making some ambient music on the Teenage Engineering OP-1 Field using its built in stereo sampler. This is something that a few people asked for or where excited about, so thanks for being patient!
    I guess it’s not a traditional walkthrough, and still very much in the style of my other videos, but I show you a bit more of the behind the scenes, of the making process, so hopefully it’s useful, informative and maybe sounds good too!
    Anyway let me know if you have any questions, or if there’s anything I didn’t touch on that you’d like me to.
    Anyway, enjoy! MM.

      Thank you! Happy to, most of them are pretty basic, but with the CM-15 microphone you could sample a lot with great quality, the line in too, I’ll do some more sampling and start putting a video together!

      Oh nice! The only thing I’m missing is the TX-6 although I think it would be a useful addition (and complete the collection!) I think most of my samples were either recorded line in, or from the on board mic, so I’d like to explore using the CM-15 more for sample capture, I’ll have to get started on a video! (It’ll be a while, I have a backlog of maybe 6 videos I need to get edited)

      @ceanwav How do you like the TX-6? It’s something I’m starting to look at more seriously now! I’m definitely interested in the dawless power, having EQ & compression etc seems great..

      @@megamodularis For me personally, it’s an Audio Interface first before anything. Then I’ll use it as a Mixer from time to time just for fun with the Tp-7 to record or mix a song. I then will record the mixed audio into a track on the Op1f for an additional 3 tracks or for an added effect on the master if I want. But I mainly use it as an Audio interface with ableton it has 6 stereo (12 mono) inputs with gain control, compression, 3 band Eq, panning, a filter, or effects 2 banks of effects which you can only occupy 1 at a time with each respective bank. It has an Aux send and a Cue output to use to send and return outboard gear. I personally use 5 of the 6 stereo inputs. And I occupy both the aux and cue outputs always. But it’s also a synth and it has midi capabilities amongst a few other things I’ve not yet delve into. The minimalistic nature of the device is inviting and the fact that you’re using 3.5mm cables also makes the cable management easier. I will say though, The only flaw for me is not being able to connect my monitors to it. I have not found a good single stereo 3.5mm jack to dual quarter inch long enough to split and separate to go into left and right monitors, so I keep my SSL2+ for that.

      Thank you Jeff, I have occasionally experimented with the tape reel mechanism and a little bit of scratching, but I don’t think it’s something I’m brilliant at, I’d be happy to try and make a bit of a video about it, if that’d be of any interest to you!

    Still trying to understand the real benefit of getting the TP-7 when the field is a much more capable multitrack recorder.

    • @megamodularis
      @megamodularis  9 місяців тому +3

      That’s a good question, the field is obviously very capable, I do find the TP-7 really useful for recording the audio for these videos (which of course you could do on the field) but is really easy, intuitive & seamless with the TP-7, I was experimenting with recording a video and doing a voice over at the same time, and plugging in the CM-15, then giving me multi-track recording, was great, and quick, which I could then adjust afterwards. It would also be good for on the fly podcast recording I’d think, or some general field recording where size and portability are paramount, but I suppose in the end, the real benefit massively depends on your own individual use case, for me it seems to have fit really well into my workflows, so I don’t have any complaints! Even recording my modular setup, it’s so quick and easy to do - also, I like it for recording these videos to show experimentation over loops already committed onto the field, it’s probably quite an extravagant purchase/studio addition, but on one level I personally think it’s one of the most beautifully designed pieces of hardware I’ve come across, that wasn’t an insignificant part of the consideration for me! Sorry to waffle on, but hope this helps in some way 🙂

    Beautiful music. The title is misleading though. Your description is more precise. I thought that I'd see some waltkhrough through OP1 field's sampler. Instead it's an ambient music walktrhough...

    • @megamodularis
      @megamodularis  5 місяців тому +1

      Thank you! And apologies, you’re right! Still trying to figure out how best to name videos etc, I may make a change to this title so it’s less misleading, glad you enjoyed it despite that!

    • @leanderlumen
      @leanderlumen 5 місяців тому +1

      @@megamodularis An idea: Do you even need the synthesizer and the engine you use as a title? What are your videos about? I don't get the impression that you want to advertise Teenage Engineering. I think it would be nicer (and more honest) if the music you make was in the foreground, including the content. In the worst case, the musical material degenerates into a background painting for your product video. In the end, UA-cam is full of these fancy videos (with or without succulents) that ultimately only serve to further fuel the music industry (and GAS). After buying a wickedly expensive modular system, I figured maybe I should make videos like this too (if only to show how cool all these lights look). But in the end I decided to do what is most important to me: music. And that comes up a bit short in your videos (at least in my perception). It seems like you're still undecided whether you want to make a tutorial (which I don't think is necessary) or share your music. Just my honest, unfiltered thoughts on this.

    • @megamodularis
      @megamodularis  5 місяців тому +1

      Yeh I think this is pretty spot on, I definitely want to put my music at the forefront (I do also love the craft of making and filming videos and always want to improve that) I guess I figured that including pieces of gear in the title means people looking for videos about that gear would stumble across my music? But you’re probably right that I’ve been wrestling with wanting to put my music/exploration first and that other side of this stuff (although you’re right I don’t want to do tutorials etc) but I’m still trying to find a balance, and be relatively happy with my creations (the videos & music combined) Perhaps sometimes it is relevant what module is the focus of the exploration, often that’s a basis around me starting a piece, wanting to explore a certain module, setting myself constraints etc, I want to put the music first, but I suppose it would be nice to be informative/helpful, and not misleading either?

    I'm not sure you know what you're doing. You might. And you can tell you know how to use the OP-1. But musically speaking, I can't tell. And I left 1/3rd the way thru as the story had no plot. But I did enjoy the sounds I experienced until that point. Just not sure they are connected, musically.

    • @GOSHacid
      @GOSHacid 9 місяців тому +2

      Which is more musical, a truck passing by a factory or a truck
      passing by a music school?
      Are the people inside the school musical and the ones outside unmusical?
      What if the ones inside can't hear very well, would that change my question?

    • @megamodularis
      @megamodularis  9 місяців тому +1

      I think this video was less about showing a final finished piece, and more about showing some of the process, with a focus on experimentation, trying different things, without fear if they work or not. I explain a little of the thought process in this video, maybe around the half-way mark, and there is a piece at the end of the video, though it may not be a ‘finished piece of music’ - again I say later on in the video about the importance of having fun and not taking things too seriously, maybe you left the video a little too soon? Anyway, glad you enjoyed what you did hear
