    A long-winded question John and would appreciate your thoughts! I am using either an Eastern or Semi-Western grip where my thumb lays flat on surface 1. It allows me to comfortably and stably hit the ball with the backhand side of the paddle on the forehand (right) side of my body. Particularly in dinking I use the back side of the paddle instead of the forehand, but it also surprises people if I pop it toward them from mid court with this shot. I get a lot of comments about this seeming weird and wonder if anyone else has tried to exploit this shot that this grip allows? This grip/shot is also great for digging balls that get slightly behind you on the forehand (right) side.

    As a beginner 66 year old and was using the old ping pong grip which is comfortable to a very small hand and the Continental, I am now trying to switch to the continental. After 6 months of a beginning. Not very much practice here in snow country available . It feels awkward . I just need meow practice for muscle memory. Thank you for your time in making all your viideos! People are listening to yours as everyone else seems to just go real fast over their videos. We beginners appreciate your slower teaching methods. Thank you!

    But saying what you’re saying isn’t true but not every shot is attackable. Shots that are below net level (for most players) if attacked ae ether going to hit the net OR they are rising up as the point is to keep your opponent hitting UP not hitting straight or down at you. A shot that is low hit hard is likely going out . (Ya I know high level players can get a lot of top spin and can attack shots that are below net height and still get it up and down but most rec level players can’t

    Excellent lesson, thank you. What do you think about utilizing something like the Topspin Pro or SpinPro to reinforce lessons like this? The follow through around the Body looks great but different compared to the videos with the training aides mentioned above. Any thoughts appreciated.

    Started pickleball one week ago tomorrow. I'm 74 and a former tennis player. Personal weight is good and I'm still active, walking forty plus miles a week. Decided to learn the shots before playing many games. These drills are excellent for shot execution and I will do them diligently four or five times a week. So, how long before I reach 4.0? Or can a 74 year young ever reach that level? Nobody will work harder than I. I recognize the impossibility of the question but is it possible?

    I come from a non racquet sport background, and developed a lot of bad swing habits over-using my wrist, so this is super helpful in helping me understand how exactly to break some of those bad habits. Interestingly, I managed to develop a really nice wrist-only dink in addition to a good shoulder-only dink when appropriate, and I've had many coaches and other players tell me to stop using wrist in any dink, to practice just with shoulder hinge, and it threw me off so bad and confused me and made my dinking worse overall. So this context is so helpful for me, thank you.

    If you’re only getting 30-40 touches per game you must be playing a team either way better or way worse than you. Points shouldn’t be ending that fast in rec play

    • @JeffLandauer
      @JeffLandauer 12 днів тому

      The avg number of shots in a rally at 4.0 is about 4. A game generally has about 30-40 rallies. That's 30-40 touches per player per game. It's going to be even less at 3.0 and 3.5.

    • @Little_diesel300
      @Little_diesel300 12 днів тому

      @ there’s no way, I’ve been in 3.0 tournaments with more touches than that. Our rec play averages 6-15 touches per point.

    • @26realmc
      @26realmc 12 днів тому

      @@JeffLandauer no way the average shots per rally for 4.0 is 4. Where are you getting this data?

    • @arkingmark
      @arkingmark 11 днів тому

      @Little_diesel300 @superdupr.pickleball did an analysis of pickleball 4.0 tournament ay and found about 50% of points end in the 1st 5 shots and if they made it to NVZ rally those usually ended in the 1st few hits. Assuming a close game 11-9, there are 20 points. Let's over estimate and say all points ended in 8 shots. That makes 160 touches to split among 4 players...or roughly 40 touches per player.

    You mentioned on the serve return that you like to drive when you are on balance and defensive drop otherwise. I would think that driving is less challenging when not on balance versus dropping, which needs more precision.

    • @fjg8340
      @fjg8340 12 днів тому

      Actually a great point and tanner literally just dropped a video about this. I agree with Jon tho, im much better at dropping when off balance

    • @26realmc
      @26realmc 12 днів тому

      I agree, most common consensus I've heard is it's far harder to drop when off balance compared to driving. If you're off balance you're unlikely to drop a ball that's not attackable. Far more likely to be a pop up.
