it was a keep only derby. bu the new pileons on the lake made it different than last year. cement piles were added because the lake was high this year. it's just a private lake, not typically catch and release. stocked rainbows.

glad to know it isn't just me. I re painted the smoker box, and i use hoppes gun cleaner to spray on it when it's not in use to spray away any rust.

Some tiny percentage of all rainbows will swim downstream and find an ocean, if given the chance. It's how they maintain genetic diversity. That said, folks throw the term "steelhead" around loosely. The fish in the store, or at the restaurant (unless harvested by a tribal fishery) have not returned from saltwater to spawn in fresh water. Steelhead is a gamefish, not a food fish. There is no non-tribal steelhead commercial fishery (that isn't a net pen or similar). "Large Rainbow trout" for stocking are typically Triploids (which cannot spawn) but sometimes excess steelhead stock are hatchery raised to a large size then released for sportfishing purposes. They havent seen an ocean, so it's splitting hairs to call them steelhead... but for most of us, a steelhead and a rainbow can't be genetically distinguished..

On second thought, theses are called "excess" steelhead. Where I live the hatchery will re release adult fish which have returned, if escapement goals are met. ...so they could actually be real steelhead, that once swam in the ocean, then returned, then were collected and dumped into that lake..

I get a bit irritated when someone comes in, and just says... those are rainbow trout. dude, there's a thing called fish plant reports. I know they are steelhead because it's a documented fish plant. Sweet god man. It's kind of a special pond. It holds steelhead, and is sometimes planted with overflow salmon as well, and i've seen pictures of people catching northern pike there as well. @@jasonkohler-zz7mw
