I Bought a Lexus RCF and it Broke Down In 12 Days!
My Lexus RC F was supposed to be my reliable daily driver, and now its broken down after just 12 days. It has 4 issues, two of which are major and I'm worried that the car may be dead. Not quite what I expected!

This Supercharged BMW Z3 is so engaging to drive, the BC Racing coilovers and semi slick racing tyres mean its a delight through the corners. It's turned this boulevard cruiser into a real drivers car.

Thank you for your reply.😊 Look forward to hearing his thoughts 😊
Thank you for sharing the video, amazing work. I have a 1995 Corsa B 1.2 engine. I wish to turn it into a sleeper what engine would you recommend using an Opel engine ? And would this be a straightforward swap ? Also the rear Axel from Corsa C I believe this comes with rear disc brakes does this fit on the Corsa B ? Would you know should I decide to keep the same engine are there upgrades for it like a Cam upgrade etc and inlet manifold to install side drafts Webber's. . My apologies for the many questions but I see what you did and it's amazing. Thank you
Hey Alfred, thanks for watching! I’ve asked my brother about your questions and will let you know :)
I'm in the process of buying one right now. Many thanks mate for this helpful video.
Glad it was useful! They’re great cars. Which model are you getting?
Where did you get the oil cap? Can you leave a link please?
I got it from totally Alfa www.totallyalfa.com/shop/v6-engine-parts/alfa-romeo-v6-engine-aluminium-oil-filler-cap-late/
@ Thank you very much.
You made de right choice; I bought mine 1 year ago, and have never regretted it. A FA-BU-LOUS car, completely under rated.
They are lovely cars to drive long distance. So comfortable.
Great video thank you!
🙏thanks, glad it was useful!
Very impressive, no offence I would love to see a more experienced off road drivers review with more challenging off roading I think the Porsche would really impress, I built a Suzuki sj with a V6 engine that got featured in an off road magazine, the journalist had turned up Just after reviewing the Porsche and he was impressed at the time, this isn't a soft off roader it's got a low box aka reducer that brings it up with Landover, G wagen etc.
None taken, it did pretty well with road Tyres. You can see why the 955 Cayenne is so popular with loads of overland mods. I took it easy as I didn’t want to break the car on the first try 😅
my first car was a punto 1.2elx loved that thing, but underside front to back was gone the floor pan was held together with bluetooth welds, carpet and hope. hankering after another after 10years.
They’re great cars, worth revisiting imo.
thanks for the vid. Is this the vehicle which has the bore scoring?
The 955 turbo/turbo s has a reduced risk of scoring as they have oil squirters in the bores.
@Project40Cars thanks brother. I actually meant, was this the unit you purchased with the bore scoring. Might have you confused with someone else..
@ ah right, no this didn’t have bore scoring. It did need a new timing chain though.
What’s special about this Cayenne that is going to the museum?
It’s a 955 turbo s, only made for one year in 2006. But it doesn’t need to be special to justify a road trip.
This taylors old car ?
It was indeed!
hey man, do you work with autoalex? can't help but see the logos in the backdrop! Loving the content!
No, but this was recorded at Taylor’s unit 😁
@ ah cool 👌 I’d love to meet those guys one day.
@ they’ll be doing a lot more meet up next year so you’ll have lots of opportunity to meet them. Plus Shedfest 2025 will be a Goodwood which I’m looking forward to.
I have a 2017 and i absolutely love it. Best car I've ever driven even though she's a little thirsty but the power, luxury, the rarity, and reliability works for me.
well said my 2015 is perfect in every way I get chills just looking at it fav car ever owned
Sadly my one ended up being returned to the dealer as it had a blown head gasket! I’m exchanging it for another (hopefully more reliable) RCF
@Project40Cars perfect! You won't regret it. In America you would have been stuck with the lemon
@ I’m hoping lightning doesn’t strike twice 😅
@Project40Cars Highly doubt it and if it does, I would get another car if I were you 😆
Do they not make it in manual 6 speed?
Not the clubman JCW, you can get the 3 door JCW version in manual through.
@ how well will a 6’4 tall person fit the 3 door? Also would these cars make it in a state with winters? We are moving to Buffalo and I need a small car for gas efficiency as work will be about an hour away
@ it would be a squeeze but you might be ok. I’d say the clubman JCW would be better in winter as it has 4wd.
Only the pre-LCI model with 231 horsepower came equipped with the six-speed manual option.
Valley plate is still an issue on these engines. I just hit 100k miles and it now needs to be fixed. Same with valve cover gaskets. Another known issue is the dipstick leaking when its equipped with long tube headers.
I initially suspected/hoped the valley plate gasket but sadly that wasn’t the case.
@Project40Cars well let me know what they find. CareCareNut channel on UA-cam was mentioning something about the aluminum blocks on these engines using a steel head cover gasket. The issue being the different materials and how they react to heat. The end result is the head covers need to be resealed though part of it is due to lack of coolant interval replacement. The acids in the coolant eat away at the head cover gaskets. I pray that's not what you're dealing with since it's a pretty big job. If I ever have that issue, I'm rebuilding the engine. I enjoy the car that much. It's a ripper.
Very interesting ! I can't believe this has had hg failure!! Genuinely shocking. Looks an amazing car (like a grown up MkV Supra!) but I would be tempted to seek a refund if the car let me down that badly straight after buying :( Keep us updated!
Seemingly it’s the only RCF in the uk that’s had the issue. The car is still not fixed, was supposed to be sorted this week. Communications from them have been really poor. I’m pushing for a refund but the dealer is refusing. Having another chat with them on Monday.
@@Project40Cars sounds like a nightmare, I am guessing it was not cheap either (probably north of £25k!?). What did you think of the LC 500 you mentioned? Any vids of it?
@Auto_Funk bang on the money. Sadly I had the LC before I started UA-cam. Awesome car though.
Cool channel! Subscribed!
Thanks! Liking your 928, always been a dream car for me 😁
@@Project40Carssame. I totally love it even though it is bankrupting me! Haha!
@JAYREAD pushing through financial pain with automotive passion 😅
@@Project40Cars Hell yeah! Haha!
Hi, I bought a 2004 V6 Cayenne, which at the moment I'm happy with apart from the fuel economy and the relative hard ride. I have 275x35x22" wheels, I've bought some wheels what can accommodate 255x55x18" which I'm hoping that will solve the ride problem. Recently we had snow and I thought now would be a good time to test the 4 wheel drive by the way mine is a manual Transmission with a recently new battery and I have a full air installation which works good. So to get on with my problem, I started the engine made sure that it was in neutral and hand brake on, toggled the lever forward and waited for the relevant light to come on, the only thing I got was a message in the middle of the cluster telling me make sure I was in neutral with the handbrake on. I have tried it on several occasions and have received the same message. I suspect a an electrical contact some where. Is there any information you could give on the problem.
The car will ride so much better on 18s. Regarding the lack of diff locking etc, you’d need to scan the car and see what codes come up. Could be transfer case related (either connections, the transfer case module etc). If your car has a sun roof, check the drains aren’t blocked. Also check the wiring that runs along under the door sills for breaks etc.
Long shot but, do you know what throttle cable he used, as am doing the same build and the corsa cable seems to short by a few inch
I’ve pinged my brother, will let you know!
@ brilliant cheers mate
ebay.us/DVCRsv here’s the one he thinks is the right one.
I adore my rc f she’s amazing no regrets never trading she’s my fav car ever
That’s awesome. How long have you owned it?
I got a 3.0 Z3 last year and the engine on these is superb! Love the wheels on yours 👍
Thanks! It’s such a great engine and really compliments the car.
Get rid. Its a dog. Considering this engine, what other marks it's in, doesn't suffer from HG issues. Maybe the valley plate is leaking, which is known. However it strikes me as an abused car. Driven hard cold or just unlucky.
It's a 2015 so parts are probably worn out and probably not well taken care of. I would get an IS500 or get another RCF with a refund first. A newer RCF.
That’s the odd thing, it came with full Lexus service history. I’m awaiting a callback from the dealer to see what options I have.
pair up with a young wannabe 'Ed China' mechanic and you're UA-cam will explode while he repairs and you report it regularly .... just a thought it's not a problem if you make it an opportunity
That would be the dream! Need to find a storage unit too.
2:44 RIP headphone users
That is quite loud, sorry! One of my early videos.
Head gasket? Did they remove the intake manifold to make that the valley plate is not leaking?
Yup apparently the valley plate was fine. Very odd.
@ Well that’s strange. I hope they find the problem and fix it. Good luck
@ thanks 🙏 hopefully I should have it back some point next week.
you got the 2015 first year its horrible
Is it that bad?
@ ya first year RCF lots of bugs
@ dang, that’s a shame 😭
@Project40Cars yeah the first year of production of a car usually tends to have to common problems something to consider usually later years tend to be better as problems have been fixed on the assembly line as they are aware if issues
The 2015 is a fine model year. I have a 2015 and have tracked it quite a few times. Replace the gaskets/seals and you'll be fine. It's a failed gasket, not a failed design or build.
While he was driving he was not looking at the voltage gauge ( one on far right ) definitely reading low !!!!
On the turbo/turbo s the far right is a boost pressure gauge, so that will only move when the car is on boost.
Sorry to see 😭
Thanks 🙏 hopefully I’ll see the car again.
@Project40Cars i really hope so. Subscribed to keep up 💪🏽💪🏽
Don't forget to update the forum.
Will do!
My IS Fsport got tossed a few months ago due to wiring and throttle body issues at 65K, the Front diff blew up too. So much for Lexus reliability 🤷♂. Was never done that dirty with a German car.
That sounds sub optimal. What did you replace it with?
Personally I’d have them fix it, then drive it for the rest of the warranty period and then reevaluate. Be a shame to walk away from it because it come be 💯 after these jobs have been done 😁
I think I’m leaning that way, it should be all fixed by this time next week apparently.
that car see the wrong side of a hedge? i bet it was in a frontal collision and the radar cc was never fixed properly.
Hope not, this was from a Lexus main dealer. From what I can see everything lines up right.
Sorry to see, coming from a Lexus owner😢
Thanks 🙏 I’m still a big Lexus fan so hopefully things will get resolved.
Keep the lexus
I’d like to as it’s a great car 🙏
I have had my RCF CF/TVD for nearly 8 years. Zero problems. Seen several track days. Never any issues. No limp mode, no complaining even in track sessions. Sorry to hear that. Hopefully, this issue can be resolved. Must have been how the previous owner took care of it.
I’m looking forward to getting it on track, how do you find the TVD vs the stock LSD?
@@Project40Cars I have never really driven an LSD RCF, but the TVD works like magic on RCF. Makes it feel much smaller and a lot more nimbler with the nose being hyper responsive with small steering inputs. Love it on the race track.
@ awesome, hopefully I’ll get to try one in the future.
That’s good to hear! Lc owner here- the 10 year warranty is great too
@@toms_garage former LC owner here, great car that I look forward to owning again some day.
You bought a lemon sir. Sorry to tell you.
Looks like 😭
A huge part of a reliable car is the care of the owner. I have an Audi and it’s the most reliable car I have owned. Zero problems 101K miles.
The service record/invoices checked out, condition looked decent for the age etc.
@@Project40Cars I suspect the car might have been driven abusively. Over rev or hard acceleration on cold engine. Or driven hard during break in period. I would get rid of the car and find another one. Was there anything that felt wrong when you test drove the car?
@ car felt fine during the test drive but it wasn’t a long one (maybe 20-30 mins?)
Someone has taken very poor care of this baby, truly sad to see something like this and sorry you’re going through this. Just crossed 120k in mine and I’m on its ass quite a bit and zero problems.
Thanks it’s appreciated 🙏
I have a GS460 in the UK same transmission. I did a gearbox oil change in 2020. Come this year i had the same issue as you. Found out the bolts on the sump pan weren't tightened to spec so were loose. The coolant could be your water pump edit just seen it might be your HG. I'm guessing it is the valley plate. It does happen with all cars with the 2UR
Oh that’s interesting, maybe There’s a wider issue on the sump pan bolts? Hopefully it is the valley gasket but the dealer didn’t seem to think so
@Project40Cars I don't know mate. I hope it's the bolts. One of the reasons the valley plate leak happens is with "Pink" Toyota coolant is turns acidic because Toyota say to change at 100k. Most owners now change like the "red" Toyota coolant which is 5 years. Your brakes squeaking could be you're missing anti squeak brake shims. If your pads are new they were probably thrown away
Came here to also mention the valley plate leak which usually becomes a noticeable coolant leak by 10 years/100k miles. Typically the only actual problem with the 2UR. If the dealer has a couple brain cells to rub together, they would know or see it, but you'd be surprised how dealers are. PLEASE consider keeping the car - got a IS500 myself with the same engine. The sound is just too good. The problem with issues like this is when you get 3-4 issues all at once, it can seem insurmountable and impossible to fix. But, by just isolating each problem separately you can break it down into fixable steps.
They’re starting the strip down tomorrow so hopefully it will be the valley gasket. I do like the car (for the little time I was able to drive it) so hopefully it all works out.
@@Project40Cars Ask them to do a boroscope check
The Lexus V8’s are pretty damp impressive. I looked at an IS-F and was really impressed.
It’s a lovely engine, how did the IS F ride?
@ it was a pre facelift car so the ride was a bit crap but apparently resolved easily enough with some Tein coilovers. Unfortunately my 335i shat itself, so car swapping was off the table. The interior got a bit of flak at the time when it was new, but all these down the line and it’d worn its miles better than an BMW / Audi / MB of a similar vintage. It had a Haywood & Scott exhaustion so sounded fab.
I think that was the main thing holding me back from an IS F, in retrospect maybe I chose the wrong car 😭
@ the facelift cars are supposed to ride much better. The Tein coulovers look pretty good value, so no great hardship. It’s a very impressive engine, especially if you’re a car nerd.
Definitely, one feature that is not talked about more is the direct + port injection. Zero carbon issues and great efficiency.
Get rid of it. You'll always have doubt about the car. You are buying an approved used car, but it's nearly a decade old. Did they even check if the radar cruise worked before selling you the car? What else didn't get checked? You don't know how much gearbox fluid has been lost whilst the car was being driven. Changing the seal and topping the fluid up doesn't inform you about any potential damage which may have occurred. You think you might have the only example in the uk which has blown a head gasket, that probably tells you something about how the car has been treated in the last 9 years. My personal experience I'd never be as relaxed as you are about giving them endless time to have your car. The longer this goes on, the harder it will be to get your money back from them. Don't let them upsell you out of their problem.
It supposedly went through a check list, but who knows really.
Your highest video views was on a Maserati, I say get a new car (more channel content) and go for a Maserati Ghibli 3.0 v6 or a Granturismo 4.7 v8. You don't see much content on either of those, beautiful cars and I'm sure they'll explode one or twice to ensure an interesting video
It would probably be more reliable than the Lexus 😂 I think it would have to be either the Quattroporte, the 4200 or the Grand Tourismo. All are good options.
lol, shieeet !!!
What a motor, still looking fresh nearly a decade later. Always fancied a Lexus myself. Congrats!
Thanks! I’m looking forward to some proper road trips to get to know it better. You’re never too young for a Lexus 😂
should of got a e9x m3 with dct. way better
The is M3 Better driving definitely, but that wasn’t the sole focus for this car. Maybe next time 😁
Beautiful car. Good video.
Thanks!
If I'm looking at a car that's for sale and the engine bay is dirty it would be hard for me to know whether oil that's you know let's say near the filler cap is just overflow from improper filling or if it's from a leak personally I would prefer a clean engine that I can then take on a long test drive and then see if leaks develop during my test drive then having an absolutely dirty engine bay and I can't see where anything might have been coming from or if it's just messy feeling.
That’s fair, though getting a long test drive is pretty rare in my experience (for both private & dealer sales).
@Project40Cars I've sold both privately and at a shop. When Private I'd go with customers as long as they put gas LoL! And at the shop we let them take it to their mechanic even giving them a demo plate as long as they put down a deposit and if the mechanic doesn't find issue the deposit goes towards purchase. If the mechanic doesn't find issue they really have no reason not to buy right? Win win 🙂 We usually inspect our vehicles and do repairs before we put them for sale because we sell with a limited warranty.
Good purchase. If you were looking for an ICE car to run forever once you can only buy electric cars in future this would be top of the list.
Thanks! Though it’s not been as reliable as I’d hoped 😬 the next video goes into to what’s happened with it.
What do you think of the Lexus RC-F?
If only the Cesaros were in South 😭 I bought my first car which is a Corsa lite and I’ve been looking for those rims
Congratulations, nothing is better than your first car! They are pretty awesome wheels!
