What Dead Poets Society Means For The Millennial Generation
I happened to rewatch Dead Poets Society in my late 20s and it basically awakened me to the fact that my life had was depressing since I wasn't pursuing "something" meaningful. I have compiled my thoughts in this video to highlight what exactly Mr. Keating said that triggered my quarter life crisis.

Great video, there are a number of things to unpack. 1. The riddler is just as justified as the batman in the pursuit of justice or at the very least change. Moreso because in this version batman has no plans beyond beating up criminals. He isnt the great detective. Nor does he do much with his wealth or image. My critique of the film is the last act of the film where the riddler holds the villain ball. The film CANNOT present violence against people in authority even if they are violent criminals or remorsely corrupt despite its demonstrable effectiveness. 2. Minus the bomb plot riddlers partnership works in a similar manner to dent and batman in the dark knight. Riddler points the batman in the direction of evidence that agencies will not cannot enter and the two build a case bringing to light that which has remained in darkness as the status quo. 3. There is a storyline where an alien creature latches on to various heroes and shows them their hearts desire. When it latches onto batman its his father endlessly beating joe chill the night he murders his parents. Pattinsons batman is very much in this vein. As he says "its personal" but even one or so year into his batman i never got the sense he had a plan for organised crime or to clean up the police. He was content to just beat up guys

I believe that the the writers of the movie also intended to position The Riddler and Gotham to somehow reflect our current situation which was exceptionally done well because it was not a specific event in history that anybody could reference but at the same time something an average human being would feel and relate to if they were to be neglected in the way The Riddler was right from infancy. A very interesting character background.

Perrito is not dumb. He is constantly on the receiving end of cruelty and neglect and doesnt notice it, cause he's never known anything but. For him, noticing cruelty and neglect is like asking a fish to notice water: Its difficult to see something that's never not been there.

I agree that marty should've been a bit deeper but I think the point was that - as you said- rust was the main character and just needed a thematic 'sidekick'. All in all, marty may say things that sound simple but his arguements often refer to more complex ideas/arguements. Marty's dissmissals are grounded in the futility of needless pessimism as we'll all continue with our life chores anyways. Marty talks of how community values could mould people to becoming good and bettering society as a whole whereas isolation leads to unjustified pessimism no matter how logical Rust's arguements may sound. Marty in a way also exposes Cohle's trauma when he accusess him of sounding 'panicked'. I know that's just a projection of Matrin's own hypocritical ways and fear of thinking for himself but he is right in the sense that rust is a hypocrite too. Rust claims to be a nihilist yet he wakes everyday and does his job with hopes of doing good. He even has a cross at home and while he may not have literally believed in religion he still embodied the selfless values and tried to be nietzches' 'ubermench'. Rust was 'panicked' in the sense that cynicism was his shield against being traumatised by human connection as his spiritual experience with his dead daughter turned out to be a pointless dream and as such Rust expects the worst in hopes of never being dissapointed. He makes himself immune to life's pains by killing a part of him or rather he can never be killed mentally but never allows himself to truly live either. Even the 'do you think that manual is a stone tablet' comment is referring to the arguement of how without objectively morality, humans fall to flawed man-made laws anyways so people like rust don't really have a high horse to stand on if they want to talk of the imperfections of religious people if rust himself aint a saint. Rust defends himself by saying he's not claiming to be good but again that ain't really what he believes. The entire point of Marty is to be a foil to Cohle's character and to ground at least some aspects of his viewpoints that way the audience can walk away with more awareness towards negative aspects of life while still being able to rationally justify optimism. But like you said it would've been better if Martin sounded a little more intelligent in defense of optimism instead of making religous people look like coping morons. I think a more reasonable sounding excuse for marty coupled with his contradictorary behaviour would've made him a proper rival to rust but ultimately the show's purpose is to mostly display Cohle's redemption arc more so instead of a well rounded buddy cop duo.

My gods Kate WAS boring. Especially compared to the other "love interests". Beck was a regular flawed human being that I was rooting for to escape. Candace put up a good fight and woulda won, were it not for Love. And Love ... Oh, that deranged dellusional woman, so entertaining to watch. Kate, as a concept at least, should have worked. Educated, twisted, she could have been a more self-aware Love. Joe's true match, the one to bring him down. But... Nope. That being said, Joe's character is so entertaining to watch that I wish this series would never end. He's just so.... So.... He's a lot. Like... A LOOOOT. 😂

I am much less likely to watch anything else by this guy bases simply on the fact he keeps bashing Christians. even if you arent a christian or you dont care, i am stick and tired of actors making comments that alienate half of the country. i am not saying people in the entertainment industry cannot have thier own opinions. but imagine having the arogance where you think it is ok to basically tell millions of people you dont want them to watch your stuff or pay to see them. I can like an actor or a signer's product and know we differ on religious or political views. that is fine. but when you make it public and then double down, sorry time to make a choice.

Thank you for sharing that! My expectations for season 2 were sky high since that’s where the first season left me. Like I mentioned in the video, I waited for the whole season to be aired and I guess them not meeting those expectations really is what hurt me too apart from all the things I mentioned in the video. But hopefully they fix these issues and I won’t keep my expectations high for the third season.

    • @dratah4615
      @dratah4615 8 місяців тому

@@reviewthischris So youre saying that because your expectations were high, thats what ruined it for you? Bruh thats just like all the gamers that get butt hurt when a triple A game doesnt meet expectations when they built it up in their head for 2 years. Just watch it for what it is. Reacher is a character, the second season took a different approach to the character not because they wanted to change reacher, but because they wanted to showcase who he is to his loved ones. One of his key characteristics is his strong sense of justice, which he used to progress the entire plot of the 2nd season. The only difference is he was more rash in his decisions instead of calm and collected. However, and this is really important to understand....Reacher season 2 was not about reacher. The whole point of the 2nd season was about his team and his background. Which now lays a plot for future movies, shows, games, etc that will need supporting characters. If they stuck with the old silent reacher bit for 5 seasons, we would be complaining that all he does is stay silent and kill people...which is boring after awhile. Yes it was not as good as season 1, but it is far from bad enough to not finish the season.

I loved the first season. Loved it. I didn't finish the second season. His crew got too much screen time, and I don't give a shit about them or his relationship to them. Will they, wont they with Jack Reacher isn't something I give a shit about. Masculine acting girl bosses is a trope, and I am just done with them. I wanted to see Reacher head into another town and get caught up in some stuff again. Then at the end of the Season.....wander to the next adventure. It is what made Mando season 1 good, it is what made Conan iconic, it is what made Reacher season 1 great. Unless I hear some serious changes, I won't be watching Season 3....IF they even get to make one considering how many balls they dropped on Sesason 2.

In Reacher 1, there was a mystery that was revealed a little at a time, and not completely until the last episode. In Reacher 2, all the important stuff was known by the third or fourth episode. In Reacher 1, his brother had bee brutally murdered, yet Reacher was self controlled at all times and only killed when necessary.. In Reacher 2, Reacher hunted for people to kill, and killed just for the pleasure of it. Plus, the ending was just pure bullshit gore.

I’ve seen that a lot of people agree that making the 41st division leave with Zuko is a thing that they did better than the OG. However I’m not exactly sure it is. The reason why OG Zuko earned the respect of the crew is not because the crew “owed” him respect and servitude because he saved their lives. They respect Zuko because they realized that Zuko was a good man that they can rely on despite his relentless drive to capture the avatar and restore his honor that made him seem like an a**hole at times. The crew “chose” to respect Zuko. They didn’t “owe” him anything. Zuko earned their respect because he was a good man and not because he saved “their” lives and they “owed” it to him. The new version actually reduces that impact because now it’s almost out of their hands to choose to respect and follow Zuko. They have to do it because they owe him their lives. It actually takes out the character from the crew to be honest. 🤷‍♂️

wtf were they thinking?? "sokka being sexist is not cool! lets just make sukki an absolute horndog with no personality" in the animated show sokka got totally embarrassed for being sexist it shows how he grows from it.

I don't even care abt the remakes and stuff but the thing that makes me mad is that some ppl in my class think the live action show and MOVIE were better than the original! Korra is 10x better than the remakes let alone ATLA. Like you're comparing one of the best shows ever to "My name name is Ong" like what.

Cartoon Aang can solo both live actions easy

They let their fear of being labeled as sexist prohibit them from several character arcs which is just sad. Also why did they need to make Aang super emotional in the remake? He's no longer the care free kid fighting to save the world with only a few months to do it, and I think that's one of the things that people love so much about Aang, its his positivity that makes him so loveable.

I guess that’s why the original creators that were hired from the cartoon series left the Netflix show

It could never and will never evoke the essence of the original. If there’s going to be a comparison, it’s got to be to the movie, which it definitely clears by a mile. Ultimately it was a series that did not need to be made, some things are just more optimized for an animated show, but reracking existing IP is the meta that these streaming companies are following so here we are.

Yea, the netflix version absolutely sucked. 0 growth as you said, and by the end, the main crew felt like different people from the original series.

It's only first season! Don't Judge the whole series by It's first season! Wait for the season 2 and season 3!

Disagreed. The dialogue was the only thing I had an issue with.

I loved it too, here's my opinion. You need to separate the two (the OG animated series and Netflix's) in your mind and learn to enjoy the simplicity of it. It's dumb watching it as a series expert/analyst, because all of the actors are inexperienced, and that's GREAT. Take Harry Potter for example. Aside from that, visuals are beautiful, soundtrack's amazing, world, character and clothing design is PERFECT.

That’s a very rational take on this and honestly a lot of people should employ this strategy to have a better viewing experience. But humans are emotional beings and it’s difficult to do that when you love the OG animated series and the characters in them and hence one would expect a faithful adaptation.

I used to like this movie but then I rewatched it and could barely laugh. Besides the Bratislava and the German truck driver bit, its pretty shit tier. Cheap, lazy jokes and mostly ugly greenscreened locations. Guess we all have to grow up sometime. Still a good video though.
