Super Mario Bros. Theme but the Rhythms Get Crazier
Super Mario Bros. theme was written by Koji Kondo in 1985. In my version rhythmic complexity increases with each take. Special thanks to WildMojarras whose piano transcription I used as a starting point.

This one was recorded during the Polyrhythmic Possibilities Seminar conducted by Berklee professor Henrique De Almeida in Spring 2021. I took some liberties with the orchestration, as you can see. Gavin Harrison Rhythmic Illusions - 16th Note Displacement Scale
Переглядів 5202 роки тому
Here's another one from spring 2020. Gavin Harrison's Rhythmic Illusions contains lots of challenging ideas. On page 13 you see the so-called 16th note displacement scale: a simple 4/4 rhythm gradually shifts one 16th note forward, until 16 bars later it returns to it initial form. I found it helpful to put a constant 4/4 loop over it to better illustrate the displacement effect. The loop was m...

Henrique De Almeida Polyrhythmic Possibilities - Timetable IV (Drum Set)
Переглядів 5003 роки тому
A timetable from the Polyrhythmic Possibilities by Henrique De Almeida. It involves rhythms from 1 to 8 played over 4 beats. This version designed by Henrique deals with right hand playing the figures on the ride cymbal, while 3 other limbs are keeping the 4 beat ostinato. I put a simple melody over it to accentuate the subdivisions. The Polyrhythmic Possibilities book is available on Henrique’...
Henrique De Almeida’s Polyrhythmic Possibilities - Snare Solo 4 over a 3:2 ostinato
Переглядів 4753 роки тому
This solo was originally written by Henrique De Almeida in his book Polyrhythmic Possibilities for the snare drum. However, during the spring semester online course on polyrhythms Henrique would challenge the students to play it over a 3:2 ostinato in feet and right hand playing the swing ostinato. It wasn’t an easy task, especially for a guy with little jazz background like me. You can see mom...

    Can this one be done with the click staying at same tempo throughout? This study is kicking my butt

    • @YaroslavKurilo
      @YaroslavKurilo Місяць тому

      I don’t think so, staying with the same click tempo would hurt the brain even more. I assume Gary’s idea was to use click only to count in and then proceed without the click. He uses this approach on all the audio recordings for the book.

    I always struggle to know how to count the odd 16ths Is 5:4 - 1,e,and,ah,gah? Are Sextuplets - 1,e,and,ah,gah,dah? Is 7:4 - ? How do you count 5:4 and 7:4 sixteenth notes and a group of 6 sixteenth notes, just curious?

    • @YaroslavKurilo
      @YaroslavKurilo 5 місяців тому

      For 5:4 I would use either “one-two-three-four-five” or “cha-ka-tu-tu-tu” or anything similar. But honestly, I don’t count that much. As for the 5’s, 6’s and 7’s I’m more used to the several stickings which give a certain feel of the figure. Like, with 5’s its either RLLRR LRRLL or RLRLL / LRLRR

    Добрый день, что означают цифры 5:4 ?

    • @YaroslavKurilo
      @YaroslavKurilo 8 місяців тому

      Добрый! 5:4 означает, что в пространство, которое занимают 4 ноты (например, 4 восьмые ноты), равномерно вписаны 5 нот - иначе говоря, квинтоль. То же самое, как 3:2 - это обыкновенная триоль (три ноты играются там, где в оригинале помещаются две).

      Hey, thanks for the kind words! These are nested tuplets: triplets inside an 8th note quintuplet. Each note of an 8th note quintuplet can be subdivided into two 16th notes. 3:2 means we put three notes (a triplet) instead of those two notes, kinda like squeezing :)
