Forget What You Know! A New Way To Wrap Guides On A Rod Blank.
First of all, a special thanks to Bob at Rodteck for sending me this kit. I absolutely love carbon fiber and to add more is just what I like. Don't be alarmed by the liquid plastic, in general epoxy resin is plastic. Sometimes they are derived from different sources, plant vs oil. I know the product that he is selling is great and made for rod building. He is using it on production rods as well. Here are some links for you:

How To Make Custom Cork Grips Using Rings and Jigs! Custom Rod Building
I bought one. It's a gimmick though. Paid 1300 Canadian, and the stem is fused to the base collet. There are about 6 parts down there, and none of them functions because the part is fused. Mine did not come with the crank, the lever really doesn't work, it is awkward as the head assembly is out of balance and flops over as one comes over the top. The axial parts are not smooth, as I feel was promised. The head flop is part of that, but it is understandable given the design constraints, but the tension is not smooth either. There isn't a lock nut at the top the stem, so the top assemblies can be easily twisted so it is free, though it really isn't a problem. But it bothers me to pay a chunk for a vise when some of the decisions seem to be there for ease of manufacturing, or packaging. Where is the pride of building a solid product. The ratchet is something nobody uses. Speaking of which, "nobody" actually uses the rotation feature either it is supposed to be used to crank on material. Hence the crank option. This is for people who think rotating a handle through 4-6 inches is faster than running a bobbin at an inch. The material clip is a joke, it is too tight to put fragile materials in, and is way above the axis of the jaw. Either way you flip it, it is in the way. It can be removed, but when I pay a lot for a vise I kinda want to keep it unstripped, on the concept that maybe they knew what they were doing. Also, over time, I would probably loose the parts that someone might want in the future. The jaw is well engineered. It has great access, and it will hold any hook you can cast, firmly. It has always bothered me that there is that little thumb screw to adjust the opening, but utility is there because you can hold the same starting opening for inserting a succession of the same hooks, and the throw of the lever is all available for tightening the hook, not adjusting for the hook size. What does bother me is that there should only be one level of Jaw. The Jaw is the heart of the vise, and if they have any integrity, the top of the line jaw should be on every vise. That is how HMH, Regal, Dyna King do it. Not to mention the vises that cost 30 bucks. I also have a midge jaw I bought, at one point, and it can't be mounted on this vise. And sure, this vise will tie anything, but still, apparently this premium vise company thinks it is OK, to put inferior core product out there when they are charging substantial dough for color variations, and other trivialities. The reality is that knobs actually work better than levers, not to mention what they call the operating system on the Regal. Just saying. Unfortunately, Renzetti broke the vise market. Rotating vises are actually a bad direction. The ability to inspect or access the bottom of a fly is useful when one is learning to tie, or just for the fun of looking at one's handy work. But full rotary is a joke. "Nobody" uses it. You see elite tiers who run these things have removed the outboard thread support because the whole concept is a joke. And what is worse, it ruins the ergonomics of the vise by making the weak elbow chicken wing because of the downhill tying posture. Or you see the clamp vises mounted low to the table tops to relieve the strain, and then the rotary feature has the jaws at an angle so the fly can be seen. All this would be fine, people want what they want. But at a marketing level it is difficult for tiers to take rotary out of the equation. Why not have it? It doesn't have to add cost. So what has little or no place in tying has become the default design. And that is too bad. Particularly because better vises are available cheaper, in the form of the Regal in particular. 25 dollars will still get you a vise that works for most uses, and has better ergo than a Renzetti.
What are you using to grip & spin the rod while you use the sanding belt?
I like their new design. I have one of the old ones still that I use it's a great machine to have
Algorithm
What foregrip did you use for this build?
Great video! In the beginning you say the mandrels develop a "seasoning" from the poar foam and that you have these mandrels specifically for foam cores. In the end when you are turning a core with a chisel you say "make sure you use mandrels for turning - you don't want to use your seasoned mandrels bc if you cut into the seasoning then they won't come out easy". It looked like you used the same mandrels for this whole video (pouring and turning)? I'm confused with what you mean and how many sets of mandrels are needed for the process of making these? Thanks!
a true master!
After you take it off the lathe, how do you ream the grips so they’re perfectly center on the rod?! I can never get mine concentric no matter how hard i try.
Any vids of you catching salmon with this rod
I will try and upload one for you
Nice
Where can I get the cork pie cutting equipment?or did you have it made?
I'm surprised that you don't use a vacuum bag? 🤔
What power wrapper brand are you using in this video?
American Tackle with an Alps head.
Hello ! What is the name of the technology used to make the sticker? What process is used to make such a thin sticker?
Heat transfer!
Sweet build
Hi
What's the best way to sand cork after it's installed on the blank?
I just do it right on the rod lathe!
Nice
Lol! I'm his wife, and I just now see his short. I knew the setup looked familiar.
I have always wanted to do custom rod building. I’m not sure why, but the first time I saw someone building custom rods I’ve wanted to do it. I’m a disabled vet and at the VA hospital I used to go to they had a fly tying group that did little group fishing trips. They told me that they occasionally get rod building kits but I could never manage to get one. I couldn’t get out to fish in the areas they went so I figured another person could maybe benefit from the program… still, I wish I could have done the rod building. I just don’t have the money to get the tools and materials.
Great video! Do you mind if I ask which thread is in the top left (large spool)?
Pro thread D in graphite. Not sure of the number purchased it second hand.
@@EvolveCustomRodsthank you. Do you mean Prowrap? Having a hard time finding that color. It looks similar to what Megabass uses which is why I’d like to find some.
I will try and match it tomorrow
It's number 841. Iron ore
Hello Great content!!!! Notice you have magnets on the big spool attachment, can tell where you got them? Thanks
I don't have magnets on them.
I ended up getting it 😂
Love the custom handles and butt cap
John it's been over a week since I applied my first of epoxy to the guides and need to apply the second coat any tips on applying the second coat since it's been over a week. Thanks
Just put it on, make sure its clean, but I have gone a month between coats.
Are you still happy with printer? User friendly app? I want to pull the trigger just worried it will be a headache. Can you import images to app as well?
Good day John, I am thinking of building a BFS setup. I like how yours came out!! Just a wonderful scheme!! I am a fan of Winn grips are your grips still in production? Also I am working on a inshore/bass rod, and plan to use test out the Microwave Air system. Did you use a kit, for the Microwave Air? Have you have had any issues with Microwave Air stripper first guide ever fall out or do they rust due to the saltwater? Thank you for your help and quality work!!
I just ordered the px800 from Larry after finding your videos. Question I have for you, do you make each rod length, action, ect. tag in paint? Or do you use another program?
I use the Epson program. Label editor professional. Just impot the image and change the appropriation and you will have what you want. Text all goes through the app, just adjust font accordingly. I also recommend if using different size fonts, create a new text box. It will make editing easier.
Could you share the link where you get the sleeves

Looks like they found an innovative way to use Bondic, the liquid plastic repair stuff that is cured in a few seconds with an led uv (?) light. This seems to be a good option for repairing a broken guide wrap, especially when you are away from home. Heck, there are plenty of guys who still swear by electrical tape.
Use plastic hose clamps works alot better.
I was wondering if the micro air wave guides would be alright spiral wrapped on a 12 ft casting float rod? I’m just getting into building steelhead fishing rods but I’m thinking it’s fine. I’ve used them on pike rods as well but will use the locking wrap as well.
I would definitely do that!
Has the lower DPI of the PX400/ older version ever been an issue. For me it’s the main difference between the 400 and the 800.
Not that I could tell, it was a free upgrade for me. My pearl 270 was great!
While I can appreciate the efforts you've mad in this video... All I am seeing is Rodteck claims that their C-tape is super special "patent" product. Yeah well anybody who knows how carbon fiber tubes are made or played around with carbon fiber molding would know this C-Tape ain't no patent pending Rodteck super science. As far as UV resins, I am not entirely sure they chose the best solution going with Flashfix for this use case. But I guess they had to keep the cost down to attract customers.
I understand this from your prospective. I support rod builders and the companies that are part of the industry.
Such a thing of beauty
Any idea if there is a weight difference between this and using thread and epoxy (the normal process)?
No idea. If I had to guess and depending on how much epoxy is put on, maybe a gram for an entire rod. You could use size A thread to reduce weight or use a light coat of epoxy.
From asking on RBO one person states that the wrap / finish become brittle over time and crack or fail. How long have you had some of these rods out in the world? I'm thinking of trying some but only hesitant due to longevity - I have rods over 20 years old with thread and FlexCoat that are still going strong. I would sure like to see one of your finished rods to get an idea of what to expect. Your video was very informative. Another thought I had was guide replacement and what that would entail.
I have very little experience with this. I can tell you though, based on the engineer who made this system, it will last a long time. He is using it on production rods, they wouldn't do this if it had a high failure rate. I love carbon fiber and I am sure this should last a long time. If you leave it out in the sun and don't take care of it, it may not last as long. This happens with thread as well.
Thanks for the info. I'm going to give it a shot@@EvolveCustomRods
Thanks a lot for the good words. We put a lot into the Craftsman Lathe so we appreciate when someone enjoys using it so much.
I have a follow up video coming soon. I really appreciate the quality of this, plus it makes rod building more enjoyable.
Thanks for the great video. I had the Alps power wrapper. I am thinking of getting the Renzetti. I actually had reversed the track on my Alps so the thread carrier was on the side away from me.
I was thinking of doing that with mine before I purchased this one.
One other question. Does this motor reverse. I had done a few rods with wraps and epoxy colors.
Not very easy, yet you can change the orientation of the motor.
Wow I commented on the wrong video sorry I dont know hoe it switched videos on me
So what all comes with this wrapper sorry if I'm asking to soon still watching video
The base, stands, thread carriage, motor, belt, 3 stands, and foot pedal.
Nice work John! Great idea
I saw your post on Facebook and left a comment. Interesting video, thanks for sharing it. I hadn’t seen your channel so I subscribed to you. Take care!
I subscribed to yours as well.
Cool video John. How difficult is it to adjust a guide that may be a little out of alignment before applying the plastic? Do align the guide before the tape or after? Thanks
I align the guide before the tape.
It might be viable IF the C tape came in different colors. That is what most of my customers like best, the fact they can get custom colors on their wraps.
So, the idea could happen, but it is not up to me! I might just try to put epoxy with pigment over it!
Maybe for trying a guide train before making one using thread. I would not use it on custom rods for sale. It seems a quick way of making a buck without showing any skill or craftsmanship.
I love carbon fiber and love the idea of attaching guides with it. Diawa has carbon fiber guides and they are known to break.. I love the look of these wraps. if it makes my job easier and if the customer likes it, this is a win, win scenario! I am also not forgetting how to wrap with thread and use rod builders epoxy. I just love different options for my customers. Threadwork and craftsmanship takes time and costs money, as it should!
I have tow of these lather 12 feet top quality nothing come close to lathe
Excellent video! Renzetti also produces US made, high-quality fly tieing vices. I have their Master Vice since 1994 with thousands of flies tied with no problems whatsoever. Thinking about their buying their rod lathe and you did a great job demonstrating! Thank you again!
I will have a follow up video on it soon, and I still love it.
Pack bay flex cost and alpa is Americans design cheap quality
Thanks for that review sir. I’ve been struggling with the decision of which power wrapper. Will def follow you for more information. Best, T
what guide sizes did you use on this build?
12 to 8 to 5,5,5,5, ect
