Unearthed Treasures: Top 5 Retro Indiana Jones Games You Can't Miss!
Never played this, but remember the cover vividly. One of many such bits of art that I found thoroughly captivating. A lot of these box arts deserve to be framed and hung on a wall. Glad I found your channel. Cheers from Texas!
I have zak mckraken in box, except when I got new it never came with that code paper. Even after calling them they did not send me one. Had to hand write a copy from a friend's copy
That must have been frustrating! Getting a new game only to find out it was missing a key piece like the code paper-especially back then when it wasn’t as simple as downloading a replacement. Props to you for going the extra mile and handwriting a copy from a friend’s version. Dedication like that shows just how much these games meant to us!
lovin your content but just my 2c worth of unsolicited feedback: the AI generated stuff is kind of unpleasant to look at... not sure why.. uncanny valley, maybe? :-)
Thanks for the honest feedback! I’ve been experimenting with AI-generated visuals to add a bit of flair, but I totally get how the uncanny valley effect could be off-putting. I’ll keep that in mind as I tweak the style for future videos. Always appreciate constructive input-it helps me improve!
Uuno Turhapuro muuttaa maalle disk version was sold for 3712 €
Great! Thanks for Watching!
Maniac Mansion was the very first graphic adventure i played. Surprised it was pulled off with 64KB of ram. Most of the other games on the list i never actually played, apart from Gianna Sisters and a few others. I can see why GS is very sought after, as it was released in very limited quantities after threat of legal action from Nintendo. Other games just seem to be there because they are so rare to be found in a box but not necessarily good games?
Maniac Mansion really set the bar for graphic adventure games on the C64-it’s amazing how much they managed to squeeze out of that 64KB! And you’re spot on about The Great Giana Sisters. Its rarity and the Nintendo legal drama have definitely made it a collector’s gem. As for some of the other titles, it’s true that rarity doesn’t always equal quality. Some games gain value purely because of their scarcity, even if they didn’t leave a huge mark in terms of gameplay. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! What did you think of the Giana Sisters gameplay?
People are stupid. The only one reason!
Great video. But do these games hold up a the "best of the best of C64 games"? For me it would be a perfect box version of "Impossible Mission" (on disk), "Pirates" or "Silent Service". These might be easier to find in the US, but are hard to find in Australia. For me, I'd love a box perfect copy of "Impossible Mission".
Thanks for watching and the great comment! You bring up an interesting point-some of these games might not hit the “best of the best” list for everyone, but they sure have a big impact in terms of collectibility and nostalgia. I’m with you on Impossible Mission-a complete box version would be an absolute treasure. And Pirates! is a classic that never gets old. It’s fascinating how location plays such a big role in availability-what’s somewhat common in the U.S. can be a rare find elsewhere. Do you still keep an eye out for that perfect copy of Impossible Mission?
@@FloppyDeepDive Sure do! It seems to have been released mostly on tape and the boxes I've seen are pretty beat up. Have yet to see a version on disk, although back in the day it must have existed - that said it was released pretty early on in the Commodore 64s life. So maybe it was only released on tape?
I've been waiting for this based off of Ghostbusters, many moons ago.
Thanks for Watching!
This video made me cry... I have Zak McKracken Completed without box... my mum threw it out because "it was just an empty box on the desk"
I feel your pain on that one-it’s like a dagger to the heart when something so nostalgic gets thrown out like that. Zak McKracken is such a legendary game, and having it complete would have been a gem. Funny how those “empty boxes” ended up being treasures later on. Have you thought about trying to track down the box again, or is it just too bittersweet?
That Holiday rap by MC Miker D and DJ Sven. "Ring rand a dong for a holiday" easily one of the worst songs ever! 🙂
Haha, “Ring rand a dong for a holiday” is definitely one for the history books, and not in the best way! I have to agree, it’s a strong contender for one of the worst songs ever. But hey, sometimes those cringe-worthy tracks stick with you the most!
Interesting - I have Mandragore, Skariten, all 4 boxed Dunzhin titles (+ Kaiv, Wylde, Ziggurat), some non-game titles like Codewriter, and others but they are probably too obscure (from mail order sources like Aardvark Software) - some of which I've never seen again on eBay. Expensive is a product of market demand, people remembering something they played back when. Much of what I collect did not go mass market enough for people to remember them.
That’s an impressive collection, especially with those boxed Dunzhin titles and the obscure ones like Codewriter! It’s crazy how some of these treasures were mail-order exclusives back then, making them even harder to track down now. You’re right-nostalgia and rarity drive the prices up. Do you have a favorite from your collection that stands out, either for its gameplay or its backstory?
Are you talking about disk only or tape as well?
For this countdown, I focused on disk-based games since they tend to have a higher collectible value compared to tapes. That said, there’s definitely a lot of love for tape games too, especially in regions like the UK where they were more common. Were you more of a disk or tape user back in the day?
Only got 3 of the 10 😭. Did never play Force 7. Need to try that one. Great video 👍
Force 7 is definitely worth a try if you can find it! It’s such a unique game, and I’m not surprised it made the list. Thanks for watching, and I’m glad you enjoyed the video! Which of the three games you have is your favorite?
This is fascinating. I find it quite staggering how much some of these games are worth. But there's some top titles here too. Maniac Mansion is just an outstanding game and still incredibly fun to play today. The Great Giana Sisters also holds up too. Ultima 1 is simply an important piece of gaming history and should forever be recognised as such. Great video as always
Maniac Mansion is definitely a standout-it’s a timeless classic and still so much fun to revisit. And you’re absolutely right about Ultima 1-it’s such an essential piece of gaming history. The Great Giana Sisters, too, has that charm that still holds up today. I’m glad you enjoyed the video-thanks for watching! What’s your favorite memory from playing any of these games?
Force 7, what a game. Amazing how expensive some games have got over time. I'm a film collector than a games collector. Literally haven't got the room for both lol Cheers Tom
As a music collector, I sorta get what you're saying...
Force 7 is definitely a standout! It’s crazy how some of these old games have skyrocketed in value over the years. Film collecting is just as fascinating though-and yeah, I get it, space becomes a premium when you’re passionate about any collection. What’s the rarest gem in your film collection?
@@FloppyDeepDive I have so many limited editions yet to be catalogued I wouldn't hazard a guess to what's the most valuable.
Great video. I'm in the UK where as I'm sure you know, the games available for the C64 differed a lot to the US, and there was way less emphasis on disk releases, more on cassette, so these kind of lists are always interesting. On a side note, perhaps I should ask the site owner, but I searched for Force Seven on the C64 Preservation Project site, and it seemed to return a result, but no actual G64 ROM image to download, and no indication of whether I can register somehow. Any ideas?
Thanks for the comment! The difference between disk and cassette releases in the UK and US is fascinating-it really changes how collections are perceived and valued. As for Force Seven, the C64 Preservation Project sometimes lists games for archival purposes even if the actual disk images aren’t available to download. I’d suggest reaching out to the site owner directly to see if they can provide any insight or help. Alternatively, checking forums or communities like Lemon64 might connect you with someone who has the file or can guide you further. Let me know if you find it!
I think those prices are ridiculous - even if they are originals and with boxes and stuff. A new game today like A Pig Quest or Tony are very cheap and bought the both. I played Giana Sisters and Space Taxi ... wonderful games. Never tried Maniac Mansion and never herd of the others. Recently i got Nixy And the Seeds Of Doom, a cute and very well made game.
Agree, never played any of them but the mere fact they're offered on Ebay at these prices doesn't mean they gonna sell for that money.
@fradd182 These prices actually sold once for it to be on Price Charting.
I’ve seen space taxi go for over a thousand on eBay, it’s one of my favorite games from the period and I have high score saves from throughout my life. Thanks for the vid
Space Taxi going for over a thousand? That’s wild! Definitely a testament to how iconic it was-and still is. I love that you’ve kept your high score saves over the years; it’s like a time capsule of your gaming journey. Thanks for watching and sharing your story! What’s your favorite memory from playing it?
Great video. Lovely ring girls. Joking aside, I have a few of these games listed, Giana Sisters, Maniac Mansion, Zak and Mutants. I actually have the Mutants music set as my mobile ringtone. Another great Galway tune. Is there much difference in the US and UK prices or cassette vs disk?
Thanks for the kind words! Mutants as a ringtone? That’s awesome-Galway’s tunes are iconic! As for the pricing differences, there’s usually a bit of a gap between the US and UK, especially with cassette vs. disk. Cassettes were generally cheaper and more common in the UK, while disks dominated in the US. Collectors’ markets now reflect that too, with some disk versions fetching higher prices. Which of your listed games is your favorite?
@FloppyDeepDive Mutants, no doubt. Then Giana Sisters.
Question 1: should you get a real C64 anyway? IMO not. It has to be the machine that aged worst. Couple of reasons: - Video output is the worst of the worst. So unless you have a 1084 or a monochrome monitor, whatever comes out of the C64 looks scheisse. Even on monochrome screens you will see a checkerboard pattern, as if the Macintosh System 1 desktop shines through everything. - Back in 83 it was the cheapest way to get tons of games if you were a high-speed-cassette dubber. But it wasn't a good gaming machine. It is far from ideal for any 2024 retro gaming vibes. It never has the best 8-bit port, never (except when it was the only port)! - The machine is a hardware-nightmare: it is ugly, the plastic gets even more ugly due to yellowing, keyboard layout is a disaster, there is no proper PSU made for the thing, there is no room for internal expansion, all ports are "non-standard" - The 1541 is even more of a nightmare. A realiable nightmare for sure, but LOAD "$",8,1 and LIST is the stupidest thing ever conceived in the history of 8-bit computing. So if you want to run C64 software: emulate in glorious artefact free blocky upscaling. You can even alter the palette from 16 flavours of diahrea colours to something that makes your OLED display pop.
What do you think is the best computer system for 8-bit gaming now?
@@FloppyDeepDive If it has to be a home computer, then Atari 800 or Amstrad CPC, maybe MSX2, but I prefer consoles: PC Engine/SMS
BBS is late 80's. We had Viewdata. That was EARLY eighties internet! Those good old days where Philips, BBC, NOS, Dutch and British Telecom teamed up to create something unique in the world ahead of Silicon Valley.
That’s awesome! Viewdata definitely deserves a shoutout-it was a fascinating precursor to the internet as we know it. It’s cool how companies like Philips, BBC, and British Telecom were already collaborating on such innovative tech back then. BBS felt more like a late-’80s boom in the US for sure, but it’s wild to think about how systems like Viewdata were already laying the groundwork earlier in Europe. Thanks for bringing that perspective!
Although in theory the NES is from 1985, the first good season in the US was 1987. So 5 years gap. And the best NES games are from 1990-1993, NEXT to the SNES, and often outperforming the SNES, so this is not very fair.
Still it's fun to see what each brought to the gaming world and how it was different for each user. Thanks for Watching!
Please disable Dutch translations, they are unreadable. Somehow machine translation and geek hobbies don't go well together.
Hopefully when UA-cam offers audible translations it will get better. Thanks for heads up!
@@FloppyDeepDive The texts are really weird. They make me think of bad Dutch auto-translate Ali-express product descriptions.
@ Yep, that's what UA-cam offers in the studio. I might try a different AI to translate.
It is at least a battle of video-output-chip-diahrea. Who has the worst output with the most artefacts, pixel checkerboard noise, colour bleed and banding issues. And floppy horror with trash BASIC commands vs red light district hell. If you don't mind I skip both and pop in my Sega Master system over RGB SCART and just enjoy Sonic II.
That’s one way to put it-video output on both systems certainly had their quirks! The NES’s color bleed versus the C64’s checkerboard patterns could make for a wild debate. But hey, I can’t blame you for opting out with the Sega Master System and enjoying some Sonic II over crisp RGB. Sometimes, you just want to skip the quirks and dive straight into smooth gameplay!
Yes
Thanks for Watching!
The game was developed in Australia - then Elite wanted to release it in Europe, they scrapped that game and released The Fall Guy. Both quite similar type of tv-series. Unfortunately, the original ELITE tape of the Fall Guy seems to been called back, because it's very hard to find copies of it. The inlay has the TV series artwork, but the Australian version did not, or there it was toned down regarding the TV reference. Possibly Elite got an injunction from the American TV network about it wasn't licenced? It was often the case later that movies and tv-series were hard to get made overseas, due to lack of proper licence deals. If the game is called The Dukes of Hazzard it's the Aussie release.
What an interesting backstory about the game’s development and licensing! It’s fascinating how licensing issues often made it so tricky for TV-based games to get proper releases, especially across different regions. The fact that the original Elite tape is so rare just adds to its allure-definitely a hidden treasure for collectors! Thanks for sharing this insight.
@@FloppyDeepDive It's easy to confuse the two games, both developed by Elite, but Dukes was never released in Europe. IDK why that is. Also in Australia it was part of a compilation, not released on it's own.
This really makes the NES version look like garbage. Love the 7800, such a cool system.
The Atari 7800 really does shine with Commando! It’s impressive how well it handles the graphics and gameplay compared to the NES version. Totally agree-such an underrated system!
Plug in a French Master System into a RGB SCART TV, insert cartridge, and wow! Glorious RGB. Plug in a French NES into a composite SCART adapterplug, insert cartridge, and HOPE you see glorious colour bleed and stripes. But 90% chance you get a black screen and a blinking red LED instead.
The French Master System really flexes its muscles with that glorious RGB output-truly a visual treat! Meanwhile, the NES with composite often feels like rolling the dice. The blinking red LED struggle is all too real!
Woah, that was a serious intro LOL. Some great looking games here, especially "Detective", it looks like a lot of thought and consideration went into the design of it.
That intro came to me while I was doing my morning run and listening to a UA-cam podcast about getting the viewer's attention in the first 30 seconds. So, I came home and redid the whole intro. I'm glad you liked it. Detective is awesome! Thanks, brother, for watching!
Wow love the intro!!!
Thank you so much! I thought it would grab people's attention.
Shaolin's Road was an arcade game, also known as Kicker. Didn't know there was a C-64 version. Friday night Dukes of Hazzard was always a good time. I was a fan of the Fall Guy too. Never saw either game though.
Shaolin’s Road, or Kicker, definitely had its arcade charm, and it’s pretty cool that it made its way to the C64. As for Dukes of Hazzard and The Fall Guy, they were iconic Friday night TV staples-such nostalgic vibes! It’s a shame you never got to see those games; they had their quirks but were fun reflections of their shows.
