- ChatGPT vs Zork: A Retro Gaming Showdown with AI
Introduction
In the world of retro gaming, few titles hold as much nostalgic value as Zork, the iconic text-based adventure game from the late 1970s. But what happens when modern AI technology meets this classic? We put ChatGPT to the test, and the results were nothing short of fascinating. Read on to find out how ChatGPT fared in the Great Underground Empire!
What is Zork?
A Brief Overview
Zork is one of the first interactive fiction computer games, originally developed in the late 1970s. Set in a mysterious underground empire, the game challenges players to explore worlds, solve puzzles, and uncover treasures-all through text commands.
Why It's Iconic
The game is best known for its challenging gameplay and memorable phrases like "It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue." These elements have made Zork a staple in the history of gaming.
The Experiment: ChatGPT Takes on Zork
Setting the Stage
We set up ChatGPT with the original Zork manual to see how well it could navigate the game's intricate world. But that's not all; we also used AI to animate certain parts of the game, offering a fresh perspective on this classic adventure.
The Gameplay
ChatGPT dived right into the game, exploring various paths, engaging with trolls, and even getting lost a few times. It was a rollercoaster of emotions and decisions, proving that even AI can find Zork to be a formidable challenge.
Key Moments and Challenges
The Troll Encounter
One of the most thrilling parts was when ChatGPT encountered a troll. Armed with a glowing sword, our AI friend had to make quick decisions to survive.
The Maintenance Room Mishap
ChatGPT found itself in a tricky situation in the maintenance room of Flood Control Dam #3. Despite its best efforts, it ended up drowning, teaching us that even AI can make fatal errors.
AI-Animated Segments: Zork Like Never Before
We used AI to generate images of what a "grue" might look like, adding a visual element to this text-based game. The animations were not only entertaining but also offered a new way to experience Zork.
Conclusion: A Journey Worth Taking
While ChatGPT didn't complete the game, it scored 45 out of a possible 213 moves, which is impressive for a first-timer. The experiment was not just about winning; it was about the journey and the unique blend of old and new technologies.

Already did. Great video also
fantastic resurrection of an old classic
Thank you! Appreciate you watching!
That was really interesting. Hard to put into words, but the juxaposition of new tech trying to figure out and intereact with old tech, based upon a human world is very interesting.
Thanks, I'm glad you found it interesting!
This is awesome! Great job with the animations! If 2 is the one on the top right, I think that looks most like a "Grue".
Thank you sir! Yes that is 2 the little round guy. Good choice! Thanks for watching!
That was amazing. A few days ago I asked Meta AI to create a mansion for me that had rooms to explore by describing them to me as I moved around. Very fun
Thanks, very cool! Thanks for Watching!
I thoroughly enjoyed this. Would like to see more. Thank you.
Thanks! I appreciate you watching. These videos are a lot of work to make text-based games enjoyable to watch but so fun to do.
Give Claude2 a try. It has a longer memory than ChatGPT.
I tried it, but it wouldn't play. I tried Bard and Bing, too, but none of them would play and give commands.
Super cool idea! Love it!
Thank you! Cheers! Appreciate you watching!
Got a little tired of how ChatGPT REAPEATEDLY explained how the glowing blue sword meant there was "immediate danger" 😂
Lol, it wanted us to make sure we knew he knew. 🤣
I'd love to see how ChatGPT fares in Return to Zork!
I'll put it on my list
Not surprising that it got further, considering it clearly has at least one Zork playthrough in its input data.
My original plan was to give it a walk-through. I did and it did worse. It was just too long to add it but it did better with just the manual.
22:57 "It even started acting like it was the game..."
The most frustrating aspect of AIs, when they can't keep their own role straight.
Zork: "I made a game. You can play it."
AI: "You made a game. I can play it."
Zork: [walks away]
AI: "I made this."
Yes, that would drive me nuts, and once it started going down that path, it never came back. I had to start over.
This is brilliant I am going to watch your whole series. Thank you!
Very kind of you! Hope you subscribed and Thanks for Watching!
Interesting experiment - did you use ChatGPT 3.5 or 4?
Thanks! I used 4
I recommended A Mind Forever Voyaging last time, but I'm thinking that I'd like to see the AI tackle something a little more risque like Farmer's Daughter or Leather Goddesses of Phobos.
I’ll add those to my list. As always, thanks for the support!
I tried Farmers Daughter, apparently, ChatGPT has content guidelines. It stopped as soon as the daughter opened the door.
Hahaha... utterly ridiculous. Who knew AI would be so prudish?
When I was a kid my Mom and Dad got me LGOP for Christmas. They never knew about thecrisque version. I lied about my age to the game and had fun with the x rated scenes and swearing
Haha... I think just about everyone lied about their age to that game!
I used an AI art program a few months ago to try and recreate scenes from Zorks description of your surroundings. My first attempt of a white house showed the White House in DC. Lol had to specify old white farm house to get something simular to your image.
Yes, it was a challenge to not get a New White House. I had to tell it haunted to get an old white house. PS Love that it gave you the White House in DC. lol 😂
@FloppyDeepDive Yeah Starry AI took it a bit too literally. I love how your AI came out for Zork. I haven't played that in a very long time
Truly fascinating and I appreciate the work put into this, it made for great content
Thanks for the support and I’m glad you enjoyed it! I was hoping people would find it fascinating. I know I do. I tried all the other chat AI’s and CahtGPT is the only one who would play.
This was very cool and much better than hhgttg. Unfortunately, it’s memory is just way too short for games like this. It was frustrating to watch it do stupid stuff. 😂😂😂
Frustrating is beyond what it put my through. Some circles made me want to throw it out the window!! lol 😂
I am curious about the mechanics here. How did you feed the manual to the ChatGPT and how did you integrate it with Zork? Is it merely prompting? And if so, how was it prompted?
I had my C64 right next to my PC. I would type in what the C64 said to Chatgpt and it would give me a command and then I would type it into the C64. Back and forth. Thanks for Watching!
This is awesome. My brothers, friend Chris and I finished this game one summer years ago : it was extremely challenging
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for Watching!
Im curious as to how ChatGP actually interacted/interfaced with the game. What is thast process?
I did a lot of typing by me. I had my PC AND C64 side by side, and I would type in what the C64 said to Chatgpt, and then it would give me a command, which I would put into Zork on the C64.
@@FloppyDeepDive Is there to some way to run c64 on emu and coy paste the c64 side? That seems arduous.
@@FloppyDeepDive Maybe a browser c64 emulator or using voice dictation for the situations/responses instead of typing everything to Chatgpt
OK I tried the Aria AI built into the Opera mobile browser and dictated by voice the responses. It's in worse shape than ChatGPT. But um we got to where Aria wanted to lift the grate and my Atari spit out an internal error #8033 end of session.
However dictating by voice might be way easier for you. I was able to get that far in a couple minutes.
Did you get any difference in performance if you typed verbose?
Good question, when it would get off track I would have to do this to get it back going again. So the answer is yes.
knock on wood, but I'm encouraged by the fact that chat GPT was not inclined to kill an unconscious enemy.
Right! Not overly violent.
Who moved the rug? He went into the living room, saw the rug, left, came back, and the rug was gone revealing the trap door.
It moved it the first time in. Thanks for Watching!
So glad someone tried this it was my first thought after using gpt for tbe first time
Great minds. Thanks for Watching!
It's like a child meeting their child?
Lol, right!! Thanks for watching!
This was awesome!!! ChatGPT is a great way to breath new life into the old classics!
Thanks! Appreciate you watching
Now do farmers daughter
I tried and Chatgpt wouldn’t allow it based off content.
@@FloppyDeepDive lol how lame. I'm not afraid of AI til it can complete that game
Well, it can't be long until AIs will outperform humans in solving such games too. But for now they probably fail in creating an internal map of the game world and will go around in circles.
It won't be long! Thanks for Watching!
Would have been funny if they just ate the sandwich
Right!?!
I like the sneakers on the troll. LOL The claim is that Chat GPT is only a large language model. This is clearly not true because it also has some concept of context and state, and it seems to understand things like inventory and direction, etc.
Yep, I thought it was pretty impressive. When it knew that the glowing blue sword meant danger in the Zork Universe I was stunned.
@@FloppyDeepDive It is impressive but it's not as smart as people think it is. I've played with it and it wasn't hard to produce nonsense and I even managed to make it lie to me. What else should we expect from a system that learns by reading the internet. If we all have a hard time figuring out what's true, why should Chat GPT fare any better? Perhaps we will see some more trustworthy AI in the coming years. ;)
amazing!!!!!!!!
Thanks brotha!
