- ChatGPT vs Zork: A Retro Gaming Showdown with AI
Introduction
In the world of retro gaming, few titles hold as much nostalgic value as Zork, the iconic text-based adventure game from the late 1970s. But what happens when modern AI technology meets this classic? We put ChatGPT to the test, and the results were nothing short of fascinating. Read on to find out how ChatGPT fared in the Great Underground Empire!
What is Zork?
A Brief Overview
Zork is one of the first interactive fiction computer games, originally developed in the late 1970s. Set in a mysterious underground empire, the game challenges players to explore worlds, solve puzzles, and uncover treasures-all through text commands.
Why It's Iconic
The game is best known for its challenging gameplay and memorable phrases like "It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue." These elements have made Zork a staple in the history of gaming.
The Experiment: ChatGPT Takes on Zork
Setting the Stage
We set up ChatGPT with the original Zork manual to see how well it could navigate the game's intricate world. But that's not all; we also used AI to animate certain parts of the game, offering a fresh perspective on this classic adventure.
The Gameplay
ChatGPT dived right into the game, exploring various paths, engaging with trolls, and even getting lost a few times. It was a rollercoaster of emotions and decisions, proving that even AI can find Zork to be a formidable challenge.
Key Moments and Challenges
The Troll Encounter
One of the most thrilling parts was when ChatGPT encountered a troll. Armed with a glowing sword, our AI friend had to make quick decisions to survive.
The Maintenance Room Mishap
ChatGPT found itself in a tricky situation in the maintenance room of Flood Control Dam #3. Despite its best efforts, it ended up drowning, teaching us that even AI can make fatal errors.
AI-Animated Segments: Zork Like Never Before
We used AI to generate images of what a "grue" might look like, adding a visual element to this text-based game. The animations were not only entertaining but also offered a new way to experience Zork.
Conclusion: A Journey Worth Taking
While ChatGPT didn't complete the game, it scored 45 out of a possible 213 moves, which is impressive for a first-timer. The experiment was not just about winning; it was about the journey and the unique blend of old and new technologies.

That was really interesting. Hard to put into words, but the juxaposition of new tech trying to figure out and intereact with old tech, based upon a human world is very interesting.
Got a little tired of how ChatGPT REAPEATEDLY explained how the glowing blue sword meant there was "immediate danger" 😂
fantastic resurrection of an old classic
This is awesome! Great job with the animations! If 2 is the one on the top right, I think that looks most like a "Grue".
I thoroughly enjoyed this. Would like to see more. Thank you.
Super cool idea! Love it!
This is brilliant I am going to watch your whole series. Thank you!
Give Claude2 a try. It has a longer memory than ChatGPT.
Truly fascinating and I appreciate the work put into this, it made for great content
I recommended A Mind Forever Voyaging last time, but I'm thinking that I'd like to see the AI tackle something a little more risque like Farmer's Daughter or Leather Goddesses of Phobos.
I'd love to see how ChatGPT fares in Return to Zork!
Who moved the rug? He went into the living room, saw the rug, left, came back, and the rug was gone revealing the trap door.
Not surprising that it got further, considering it clearly has at least one Zork playthrough in its input data.
This was very cool and much better than hhgttg. Unfortunately, it’s memory is just way too short for games like this. It was frustrating to watch it do stupid stuff. 😂😂😂
So glad someone tried this it was my first thought after using gpt for tbe first time
This was awesome!!! ChatGPT is a great way to breath new life into the old classics!
I used an AI art program a few months ago to try and recreate scenes from Zorks description of your surroundings. My first attempt of a white house showed the White House in DC. Lol had to specify old white farm house to get something simular to your image.
Interesting experiment - did you use ChatGPT 3.5 or 4?
knock on wood, but I'm encouraged by the fact that chat GPT was not inclined to kill an unconscious enemy.
