Water Dragon, a 2017 Lagoon 42 for charter through Nanaimo Yacht Charters, on the trip from Vancouver to Nanaimo via Gabriola Island. Most of the trip was close reach to close haul in 10-25 knots of wind, with some tacking at the end. The state of reefing might not be totally right, I couldn't remember exactly what reefing there was for every video portion.

    It looks like the B&G instrument only shows True Wind Angle and Speed. Only for a fraction we see the Wind Vane... do you confirm Apparent Wind around 60° and 13kts? How close to the wind can you point with this code? BTW... how can you get rid of the apparent data on the B&G ( no indicator...and it shows lay lines straight in front of you when you are beaming)?

    Excellent review. Just wonder how the emergency tiller works? Would it be fair to say that you could put one rudder in the neutral position and then simply use the other rudder to steer the boat? The T piece looks like a great idea so as not o put excessive force on the head of the rudder stock...

    no sails? are you using both engines?

    • @waterdragon4944
      @waterdragon4944 6 років тому

      The engine is only on for the last bit. As the speed of the wind increases, you have to reduce the amount of sail up in order to reduce the strain on the rigging and keep the vessel under control. You have to start doing this around 25 knots of wind plus or minus. At 45 knots, the sail up is either very tiny or you are using bare poles, ie just the force of the wind on the boat, without any sails up. It is also getting close to the point where storm tactics such as drogues or sea anchors are needed. In this video, there is just a tiny bit of the jib out for the first part.

    The unpainted fiberglass finish of the hull inside lowered the overall class of the boat ! A coat of white epoxy would have made all the difference.🤔🤔

    • @waterdragon4944
      @waterdragon4944 6 років тому

      I'm not sure why they left it like that. Anything that you can see is painted, but under the hatches it is not. It does allow you to see the core, perhaps it allows any damage or hull problems to be seen directly.

    Curious if you are happy with the factory diesel heat system, especially during the winter months? If you ordered another boat would you do an after market system next time? Are there heat vents in all 3 heads and how many in the salon? Thanks

    • @waterdragon4944
      @waterdragon4944 6 років тому

      BCCP Pilot yes the heater is pretty good. If ordering again I would get more of the options factory installed vs locally installed. The slight cost savings is for the most part not worth the waiting. There are vents in the bedrooms and at least in the owners bathroom with temperature controls and possibly vents without controls in the other heads. I can't remember that exactly or how many vents are in the salon. I will try and get back to you next time I am on the boat.

    how many liters of water and fuel on board at that time? how many people? That matters....

    • @waterdragon4944
      @waterdragon4944 6 років тому

      olivier brossy, it had 5 full sized adults on board, close to full fuel and I think full water in the double tanks. However no provisions, no clothing or personal items. After being on the boat longer in different currents and conditions I am going to say the boat speed is probably inflated by half a knot or so at these higher speeds. It is definitely more about comfort than performance on this boat but it is nice to know it can still go pretty good. Plus it was about 2 degrees Celsius outside at the time. Code zero was getting us wind speed at around 4 or 5 knots later this summer as well.

      Hi Eduardo, thanks for the comment. Since the boat is in charter, the manual flush toilets were chosen deliberately for their reliability. Lagoon has the electric toilets as an option on the Lagoon 42. I would have considered them if I was buying it for personal use only. There is a lot of debate on the topic, for example here... forums.sailinganarchy.com/index.php?/topic/173217-electric-vs-manual-head/

    the reason the lagoon here is right for me is because it can rest on the flats at low tide...the dagger board model cannot rest on the flats...you need the keep like in the lagoon too support the hull. second the sport top is better for accessing the book...the super high bridge models are no good...you can't reach the boom and furl your sails....lagoon good...FP models are good...Any dagger board model will not work for me...big and feature full.buy me a three year old too move into larger model...need storage and fridges and easy make beds..walk in showers and solar and wind...power lift dingy platform best...good interior nav station...auto hell...teak in the cockpit...teak on decks get hot....good interior hull insulation...hull can be unbearably loud if no insulation.....that's my boat specs....😁...p

  • @peterlamere5328
    @peterlamere5328 7 років тому

    for my needs...the fixed keep Hull of lagoon is better then the dagger board boats because the lagoon can sit on the ground...the dagger board boats are useless in Duxbury and Nantucket and other area I will cruise where the tide goes out on me....Anchoring out saves bi money while cruising...need that money for maintenance and dining out....p

    WTF? about the location of the fuel cut off and the "port" to use the fire extinguisher........how the heck are you going to e able to access either of those in an emergency.

    • @waterdragon4944
      @waterdragon4944 7 років тому

      Dean Collins I was initially thinking the same thing. My worry would also be about a battery or dc electric fire in the engine compartment where the switches are. Getting to the fire extinguisher port is easier to do in real life than it seems in the video, and I would prefer to have a separate engine compartment from the main hull as opposed to having the engine inside the hull, as some cats have the engines right under the beds. I don't know enough about the design and safety process or thinking to comment fully on it. I will see what I can figure out and if I should be doing any modifications. Other suggestions or comments on this are appreciated.

    • @scottmac220
      @scottmac220 7 років тому

      Dean, You can certainly add an automatic fire extinguisher system inside the engine compartment. You could also add a remote shutoff for the fuel valve. You are limited in terms of where you can have the extinguisher port, but it is quite accessible if you need to use it.

    • @DeanCollinsVideos
      @DeanCollinsVideos 7 років тому

      Yep I guess that's one of the issues when you are limited to 42ft.....how to fit everything in. Still looks a great boat though some bits seemed to "squeak" and groan more than I thought they should while walking around. I guess at the end of the day you really do need to go to 50+ in order to have a true engine compartment "firewall". Now that you've had the boat for a while do you think there is any chance at all someone could be sleeping in the owners cabin if either motor was running? Or is that not really possible due to lack of insulation between the bed/motor even at low revs.

    • @waterdragon4944
      @waterdragon4944 7 років тому

      Dean Collins, yes there is a bit more squeaking than would be ideal. I've seen other videos commenting on this too. I will try lying on the beds with the engine running in a couple weeks when I am on it again and let you know. We are lucky here with so many great places to stop that I don't know if there will be much night time motoring for Water Dragon at all given its charter base location.
