Wow! You are going against conventional teachings! If buzzing didn't work, everyone would ve stopped doing it by now correct? 🤔
Hi! Thanks for the question. The word buzz is a bit of a misnomer. The lips vibrate, but we don't actively make them do so. Several studies contain empirical evidence explaining that the lips vibrate by a backdraft of the air that we push down the horn. All the great teachers understand this. Would you be interested in me sending you a link to a great demonstration of this principle by John Harbaugh, Prof of Brass at Washington State Uni? It's truly fascinating
@TrumpetTNT Yes please send the link...am a trumpet hobbyist...wants to play my instrument efficiently

Hey, thanks for the excellent video. You mention that your routine has changed a bit since shooting this. How and why did it change, if I may ask? :)
Hi. Thanks for your question. My routine has gradually changed to address different areas of my playing that needed improvement. For example, I now do more tongue level and shape exercises (ee-ah-oh vowel sounds) from the Charles Colin book. My flexibility was something that I felt needed improving. Also, It’s always a good idea to freshen things up by changing routines incrementally over time (eg doing Clarke #1 single or ‘K’ tongued - at a comfortable tempo to promote consistency and evenness) This helps avoid wasting time on things you can already do and allows more time to work on stuff that really helps you improve as fast as possible. Please ask me a question whenever you need clarity. I’m here to help 😀
It was really nicely done.
Thank you. More coming soon
Great exercise , you gained my sub…
Thank you. More coming soon…
Thanks for demonstrating these exercises. As an 18 year old college freshman (56 years ago) my new teacher introduced me to his warmup buzzing on the mouthpiece. He was familiar with it because he was - James (Jimmie) Stamp himself. After graduation I moved away from the trumpet and took up residence behind the conductor’s podium for choral and instrumental music. Only in the last 9 months in retirement have I come back to the trumpet. It’s frustrating, but I will be using your excellent videos. Thank you
Wow! You studied with James Stamp? Amazing! His mouthpieces and warm ups helped me rebuild my chops after getting smacked in the mouth leading to a mouthpiece repostioning. I'll do a video on them soon
Great acoustics in the bathroom. Nice
😆 The dressing rooms in that theatre are just like bathrooms!
Ooh W-S-M is my neck of the woods! Hope you were gigging somewhere nice.
Ah! Small world. I was at the Playhouse. My parents also live in Zummerzet 😂
Glad you’re gently buzzing 😜
Always 😆
Hey simon, I started playing recently and in your recent videos I don't understand the pattern in your Amazing Clarke routine. Here is the video link, Can you please explain it. ua-cam.com/video/1hWiWXk1Y1w/v-deo.html
Hi! I’m sorry for not replying to you question until now. I have only found your comment via TubeBuddy, a channel management tool, not actually in the channel. Have you downloaded the free pdf of the Amazing Clarke?
@@TrumpetTNT yes
@@goid9402 Hi. I’m not exactly sure what you don’t understand about the pattern. If i may guess, is it the starting notes that you are not understanding? It’s all there on the pdf download if you are struggling to understand
New sub here. Glad to see a new way to explore a classic in a useful way. I’ll be adding this to my routine. Thanks!
Thank you very much for your support. More videos coming soon
Just stumbled across this. Brilliant. Between this and your free warm-up, definitely worth a cup of coffee.
Hey @kptrpt1! Thank you for the kind words and I really appreciate your gesture also. Watch this space for more tips and tricks 🎺
One of my music teachers said that musicians are "small muscles athletes". This video reminded me of that.
That’s a very good way of explaining and understanding what us trumpeters are all about and how it all works 👍🏼
It can also feel like we’ve been 15 rounds too sometime 🤣
Thank you, Simon; this is extremely helpful for me (comeback player). I like the way you combine several methods: Stamp, Clarke, Caruso, etc. So this is your short warm up routine because you're in a hotel room. I'm curious: do you have an extended warm up when you practice at home, and if so, how much time does it take you? Anyway, thanks again; very valuable information here.
You're very welcome! I'm glad that you are finding my videos helpful. My warm up routine is pretty much the same at home except that I usually do some free blowing eg jazz licks, simple melodies, etc to get my mind focused on playing as musically as possible during the routine. I often do the Bill Adam expanding long note exercise too which has been very beneficail. If this is something that you'd like to see a video on then please reply here :)
@@TrumpetTNT Thanks for your kind response, Simon. I'm a very senior citizen, playing 15 year after a 40-year lay-off. Jazz oriented; far from being a "pro" but I play well enough to get paying gigs and a few strokes here and there. It's never too late to learn, and I'm living proof, LOL. I'm not familiar with the Bill Adams method, though I've heard the name often. So, yes, I'd love to see a vid on that if you're so inclined. I'm mostly a Caruso follower, as that seems to have given me the most improvement. That said, I'm always open to new approaches. I'm going to check out some of your playing vids. Best luck with your career, and - stay warm.
Simon, I've been playing the expanding Clarkes almost daily since your last video and they've been a tremendous help. Will give this extended routine a go. Thanks!
Great to hear! Keep going 🎺
How’s it coming along?
@@TrumpetTNT I have fallen off the daily routine wagon. Pressure of work, DIY, getting sick with Covid, Christmas performances, and so on. This is a timely reminder to get back into it for the new year. Hope you're well 🎺
I have been doing things like this recently. I also do a lot of soft to loud and vice versa. Herbert says soft and so I do. But the loud and soft is a winner. Nice vid, you get the sub Simon, and thanks.
Hey! Thanks for the sub. Much appreciated. The thing about Clarke #1 is that it is so versatile. I'm currenrtly refining my double tonguing with it. BTW Next video dropping this weekend!! 🎺
@@TrumpetTNT You are certainly welcome.
I got the email thanks, the chimps are still working in your absence. Have a fun tour.
Awesome, thank you!
I'll be adding this one to the routine. Clarke 1 has gone by the wayside for too long and I'm already doing Flexus spider exercises and Clarke 2 in the upper register so this will fit really well with what I'm already doing. You've got one new sub.
Thank you. The Frink spiders are very powerful. I studied with Laurie for a while until her untimely passing
Excellent ideas for a mental/physical warm up to efficient air and tension-free fingers, all around the horn! Creative and helpful - thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!

Nice Simon. As a horn player of course I’d like to know what horn you’re playing - looks nice 😊
Hi Ian.Thanks for watching! It's an Eclipse Enigma with a nickel Celeste leadpipe, designed and built my Leigh McKinney. It has a 'large red' bell and is brushed, laquered with polished accents. www.eclipseinstruments.com
@@TrumpetTNTThought so! (I play an older Enigma - great horn). Looks quite different with the Nick leadpipe and bracing. Been thinking about getting a new one and would probably go large red. Only problem is I know the lead times on Eclipse horns are huge now and particularly the lacquering time.
Nice one! I love to hear a new variation.
Glad you like it!
Great stuff Simon. I have been practicing the Clarke exercises myself this morning. Look forward to the next one.
I bl**dy love Clarke #1. That, along with Adam long tones and a few Schlossbergs helped rebuild my embouchure after getting smacked in the mouth in 2019
@@TrumpetTNT Yes I do the Schlossberg as well but mostly Clarke 1 this last week. You sound great Simon.
@@ilesjazz Thanks Prof! 😁
