Mashiba had the advantage in the brawl just because ippo already took numerous body shots due to the southpaw style before they get fired up. Body shots takes your speed + stamina. Had they went all out from the start, Mashiba wont even be able to tag Ippo.

Post retirement Ippo is going to be one of the most skilled fighters in the series. We saw glimpses of Ippo's ability to execute a technical strategy against Karasawa, which to me was his most impressive performance *as a professional* (yes, I know his spars with Mashiba and Volg were awesome). Kamogawa said that Ippo's talent for problem solving was one of his greatest strengths. Seeing him develop that further- acting as a second, assisting with training, sparring with elite fighters, testing theories, scouting talent, studying tape and watching fights live- is going to make him a much better fighter. I see people complaining about how long the retirement arc has been, but we don't get a fully realised, peak Ippo without it.
