I SOLD A THIRD of My Nikon Camera Gear, Let's TALK About It
Patreon: patreon.com/theprojectphotography
Other Socials: linktr.ee/theprojectphotography
What's up y'all, welcome back to another video. Today I'm talking about why I ended up selling off a third of my camera gear, it's a lot of gear, but obviously I'm a huge believer that you have to get rid of some gear if pieces of gear overlap with one another or serve a similar purpose. This allows you to reduce the waste in your kit and focus on creating better photos. Feel free to watch the video and let me know what you think. Thank you for experiencing the world with me!

My holy trinity lens are 14-24 f2.8S, 24-70 f2.8S, 70-200 f2.8S with a couple of TC's on board if needed. I also carry the 100-400 S lens in the same kit. I am not a believer in "less is more". I really think that's BS. Having more does not change anything! Everyone thinks what they want too though. I love a ton of gear to choose from. It works great for me. I LOVE photography and don't need more or less gear to enjoy the heck out of my photography. I have been doing it for 50 plus years and will never get tired of it. I have shot a lot of stuff in my time and I ain't stopping now. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and I hope you have as much fun as I have had over the years.

The window in your background is all blown out due to z6iii lack of dynamic range. Other than that, z6iii would have been the best camera under $2500.

I envy everyone. I just was able to afford a d3400 with a crappy lens. My photography game is going backwards and everyone with a z30 is light years ahead of me. I can admit though the d3400 is better then a lot of cameras out there though

Yeah I’m gonna wait just a little bit before selling my FX3/ZV-E1 kit. But so far, the Z6iii has performed as expected, so I’m questioning whether I need to keep my Sony stuff.

    I thought the landscape holy trinity was the 14-24 f2.8, 24-120 f4, and 100-400 f/4.5-5.6.

I was too slow to sell my DSLR and F mount lenses. Now, their resale value is so low, I find myself preferring to hold onto them for occasional nostalgic use. Maybe one day they will be cool again and go back up in value.

Well said. I am now at the point of reducing the number of kits I have as camera revolutionary improvements are stabilizing. The Z6III is a very good camera, especially for video and improvements in auto-focus. I have the Z6II and the upgrade to Z6III is not compelling to me since I modified the Z6II to full spectrum for astro and infra-red photography. For all-rounder, the Z8 is awesome. It is now my main camera. The Z7II is now just a backup to the Z8. Lenses-wise, which should be the main considerations for acquiring camera gear, the only ones left for me to desire are the Plena and a super-telephoto prime (600 mm or 800 mm) for wildlife.

I am in the process of getting the 28-400 as well, it is gonna be my one all shoot all rule them all lens just so I don't need to fumble along changing. I do have the 24-120 f/4S that is primarily my everyday lens currently. I enjoy your videos, esp one coming from SoCal too.

I sold my 24-200 when I bought my 28-400 as well. I had a hard time because it was a great, versatile and compact(ish) lens. It was also my first Z lens. I sometimes question my decision because the difference between 200 and 400 is not a great as I was envisioning. In addition, I sold my 50mm and replaced it with the 24-70 2.8. The Nikon 50 1.8 was fantastic in testing, but I never actually used it. Right now I’m using my iPhone for wide angle beyond 24mm. I’m using these 2 lenses with my Nikon Z5. I think you are on to something with your trinity!

I almost bought that lens. You can get some great deals on the used market. I wish I still had my Z50. If you can get your hands on a Nikon Z6iii (a) modded, and a 20/24/35 prime you can see some amazing detail. Especially in the reds. Keep up your cool videos!

If you are a landscape photographer do not buy this camera, bellow iso 800 it has less dynamic range than the predecessor and the flip screen is worse for landscape. If you blog as you do your landscape go with the z6. It’s not like the mountain is going to run forcing you to use the superfood action characteristics of the z6 iii 😊

Great intro! Please do compare pixel shift vs traditional exposure bracket HDR. That would be very valuable info! I also have a Z6 and considering Z6iii, so any additional comparisons are appreciated. Most reviewers want to do the Z6ii to Z6iii comparison, but i bet there are more Z6 shooters out there considering Z6iii than Z6ii shooters.

Thank you for your detailed review. I always enjoy hearing your perspective. Many people have given more negative reviews of this lens. For focal range, size, weight and price I’m seriously considering this lens. I have a z6ii and z24-120 currently. I’m looking for that extra focal range.

I bought a 28mm 2.8 based on rave revues such as yours. Everything you said light compact cheap yes BUT very mediocre pics. It was to supplement my superb but heavy 24-120 f4 S lens but is just not good enough, Now saving my drachmas for a 35mm 1.8 S however hope to try before I buy.

Didn't know Nikon has not implemented this feature long ago. I also consider GPS as basic feature of which the consumer cameras like Nikon Coolpix have but is missing in many pro-level Nikon, Sony, and Canon cameras.

Nice run trough :-) I bought this lens for exactly the same reason, lots of focal length in a single lens without a lot of weight. I'm going to Iceland in a month and this will be my primary lens and hoping to have a 14-30 to go with it by the time I get get ready to go. Seems like the perfect pairing for less expense, less weight and acceptable image quality.

Great content, just want to make a remark about the astrophotography. I just don't like wide angle lenses for astrophotography, Even the 20 1.8 is too wide. I use it mainly for astro timelapses. But you get so much better results with 50 and panorama merging, or even with 35. The Milky Way is so tiny on 20, not to mention to 14. Absolutely no detail in the core. So I would like nikon to release 35 1.2 for this.

My 70-200 2.8 is better than my 24-70 2.8. Also the 105mm Macro 2.8 is also an amazing lens for portraiture. It has a unique, clean and interesting rendering. My copy of the 24-70 is a bit weak between 35 and 65mm. Still an amazing lens, but the 70-200 feels more pristine, nicer in out of focus areas and delivers nicer shadows.

Clearly I don't think the Z6 III is the best landscape camera, for sure the z7 ii is better in almost every aspect, however the Z6 III fit my overall needs much better. Landscape photography is a major part of my imaging needs, but so is content creation and the Z6 III has so many features that hits the content side and I felt like landscape photography isn't as "feature intensive" as other niches and felt like the Z6 III would do just fine (and honestly it's been amazing thus far).
