Will Apple Intelligence Be Available in Europe?
Apple's new intelligence features promise exciting upgrades to every iPhone and MacBook, but these features might not launch in Europe due to the Digital Markets Act (DMA). In this video, I shortly talk about the DMA, why this is a problem for Apple and discuss a few of my thoughts on the European tech world.
Join me to discuss how these regulations could shape the future of AI and tech innovation.

OK, so to summarize EU just wants to collect my data more easily and don't like Apple having such good security. I was sooo glad when apple released iPhone Mirroring, Share play and Apple Intelligence, but now I can't try them out. If the DMA says that the features must be available to use on different devices then they wan't it to be accessible to more people, and to achive that they just ban everything they don't like. Im upset right now, and sad, really sad. Good video though, I liked the way you explained everything.

I think the EU has turned from a free market trading bloc, to a centrally planned system, run by technocratic elites. And I think it's good that Apple is not letting itself be bullied by these incompetent bureaucrats and career politicians. And lastly, I think that us europeans are generally the type of people who value safety over freedom, we love to be "taken care" of and controlled by the system and we fear to assume individual responsibility for our future. So we always vote these control freaks in power. If the end consequence of this mentality is that Europeans will be deprived of lots of cool future technology, then this is something we will just have to live with. Innovation is fun and risky, regulation is safe and boring just like Europe.

    1. Security: Its an implementation detail if its risky or not. You can do it on device where the data is decrypted anyway and combine it with additional security measures like a secret key that is send to the user via 2FA. So no harm here if companies agree on something 2. If Apples AI is not available here its fine, we gonna force them to enable integration and it opens chances for companies in europe to offer it on their own terms. Good for competition in the market. Destroying the silos should be our main focus right now

    • @ChetTailor

The issue isn’t if a user can keep it safe. It’s if 3rd party integration will keep it safe and not data scrape. Ai Isn’t like regular software and the data that it knows goes beyond what your regular usage data is like. The security and privacy that Apple are offering hasn’t been done before. Their Ai model is on device. It’s also on a private cloud servers for when you need larger Ai models. All privacy and security can be verified by 3rd parties.

You had me at the intro. I thought, oh no, too dramatic! 😅 The 2 points that stood out to me most were the abstraction of real work and cynicism. Both I've experienced at some point in my career. For the abstraction of real work, I've seen this play out when developers (in my case) are too far removed from the actual end user. I've worked at companies where the last place you push code to was to some staging environment and then nothing... That's why I like the concept that some companies follow where they let developers do end-user interactions and support. You build it, you support it. It gives a sense of ownership and real impact. For the cynicism part. At one point in my career, I found myself becoming more cynical and it snowballs quickly until it becomes your default state. I figured out that it was because I allowed other negative colleagues' feelings into my mind and letting those thoughts take root. That is a big reason I believe companies should deal with bad actors from within as quickly as possible. Something about a bad apple and rotting the bunch. Keep making great content.

I think Apple’s ”threat” is more to force EU to give more clarification. What exact services and data it would cover. Reading through the new regulation (it’s very fuzzy) and to my understanding, most of it will not affect Apple. And will not affect most features. The interoperability with messaging they already solved. There’s already API in place to let 3rd party developers use the features in new devkit. I think this will far more affect f.i. Facebook. But it will be interesting to see what happens.

    • @leonardthiele
      @leonardthiele Місяць тому

That was my first impression too. I hope that this is only about the clarification, as you state, and doesn’t really lead to the EU being excluded from future features. I also think that this is affecting not only Facebook, but many smaller startups negatively that maybe can’t spend that much time on complying with the new regulations. Let’s see how this develops. Thanks for your comment!

When it comes to technology, the one thing the European confederation produces at scale is _meddling bureaucrats._ They not only threaten the profits you may earn in the EU, but _also_ threaten profits you earn worldwide - even if your product is designed and manufactured outside the European Union. Now that's chutzpah. The EC think they're hardware and software engineers - they mandated USB-C (which was actually a _good_ thing), but they also mandate things like replaceable batteries which can interfere with waterproofing and inductive charging. Spotify's problem is not Apple - their problem is that they're an overprotected brat with a bad business plan. Every free user who signs up with them _costs them money._ They pay every other business partner the bare minimum, and have even sued artists who tried to get a bigger cut of their revenues. They run to mommy (the EC) when Apple offers Apple Music as part of a service bundle. I've long held that Apple should release a European phone after the worldwide release of the world phone - and adjust the engineering to fit the European market and charge extra for the trouble. They want replaceable batteries? Make the phone thicker and heavier with properly armored batteries (so they won't catch on fire if you sit with one in your pocket) and a rear battery door which may force you to remove the charging coil for inductive charging. The special model can be made to comply with European regulations, but make it later so it doesn't affect the progress of the world phone. Sell both the world phone and European phone to the world - but sell only the European phone to Europe and anyone else with overly-active regulators. Have a special team charged with nothing more than retrofitting the world phone to Europe so it doesn't impede world phone progress.

Nice perspective. I really appreciate EU’s efforts to protect the end user’s rights. Even though they do a lot of mistakes, I think tech giants are also not coming with the best intentions… I think both parties see each other as rivals instead of thinking they push each other to be better… like a good friend 😁 Also EU makes a lot laws but i don’t think they enforce those laws. I think the big thing to note is that computer science is not software engineering. A bcs degree alone doesn't not always teach employable skills. It sucks but there is a lot of self learning that has to go on to be employable. I get a lot of LinkedIn messages from CS grads to review their resume, but it they generally lack real world project experience. My manager is even contemplating shutting down our intern program, because we can't seem to find interns with atleast some grasp on the basics, a lot of them just cheat in classes (which is easy to do in cs) or just lie on their resume. So the market is bad, but make sure you are also learning employable skills

Wow...two people actually talking like adults on media. This is refreshing. They acknowledged their annoyances, gave a their side of it, and moved on. Amazing.

On the #1 point about the final build not matching the design, I find engineers can achieve things better if the underlying thought process is explained more clearly. Just handing over a design and saying, “here monkey, build this”, which unfortunately is a very common mindset, as part of the design handover you should walk through all the design decisions made, explain why they were made and which ones are the high impact design decisions. Explaining the why, rather than the what, is almost always better. When engineers say they want to be involved earlier in the process often it’s more at this stage rather than the “sketch stuff on a postit” stage.

I am coming from marketing and did some design work and now do a career change into software development. The most annoying thing is when people don't pay attention to spacing, alignment and all the details. That freaks me out :D

I bet engineers that don't care about spacing haunt designers in their nightmares.

Very fresh and entertaining. I liked a lot your conclusion (that it is all about communication).

What is your top annoyance when working with designers or engineers? And, how do you solve that? Would love to read your perspective!

Being an engineer, I often get the impression that creative people approach engineers with a feeling of superiority. And this annoys me a lot.

Yes, I've experienced that as well. But even the other way around where engineers are thinking less of designers because "they can't build anything". This is why a humility and respect are very important traits when it comes to effective collaboration. Both have valuable skills without the product couldn't be build.
