Gold At Pleasant Creek - The Incredible Stawell Goldfield
The discovery of gold in Victoria was officially announced in July, 1851, and with great excitement the colony's rich goldfields were opened up one by one.
While all this madness was going on, an old hand named William McLachlan was employed as a shepherd's hut keeper all the way out on the Concongella pastoral run, about 80 miles beyond Ballarat and far beyond the scope of any known goldfield.
Prior to his employment at the Concongella run, McLachlan had spent some time at Buninyong, one of Victoria's first discovered goldfields, and he knew a bit about prospecting for gold.
So there he was in 1853, perched on the bank of Pleasant Creek, peering into his cooking dish which he was using as a gold pan. And a small but beautiful show of colour was shining back at him.
Although it wasn't much, McLachlan's discovery would soon lead to the opening up of one of Victoria's most prominant quartz mining fields, which is still yeilding gold to this day.
In this video, we're going to take a look at the brilliant gold mining history of Stawell!

Today we're going to take a look at another of these brilliant gold mine lithographs from the early 1860s. This time it's the Pioneer Gold Mining Company, which was an underground alluvial mine working on the Durham Lead near Buninyong. This company was registered in March 1857, commenced work a few months later, and after several years of hard work they struck the gutter towards the end of 186...

Today we're going to take a look at the one of the Maryborough district's most remarkable mines, The Grand Duke, and a shocking accident which occurred here back in 1883 which claimed the lives of four men. This video is an improved version of one of my older ones. The original was far too fast paced, along with a few other issues (thanks to me being fairly new to making videos). I’ve been mean...

Beautiful mine, Michelle. Hill End, you say? The non-Forbes, once Forbes, not Forbes one?! Ha! That adit with the hammer and old box, I'd not go near it, not without an explosives handling professional giving clearance! Although the chances for a pair of $10,000 overalls jeans or American gold dollars left with the sandwich or pastie in a folded kerchief... dream away, aye. Cheers from Gabi of Narre Warren.

The Walloons and German masters who came to Sweden with knowledge of mining and metallurgy, also taught us to make sausages from the worn out mining horses. It's was called "Falukorv" named from the coppermine in Falun, Dalarna... It is today a very common dish in Sweden, though not containing horsemeat now. We do have a few smoked coldcut sausages still with horsemeat that are very tasty, Gustafskorv as an example... PS. Swedes know about Valhalla PPS. Hard to understand the size of the non metric measurements used in the clip...

I just started to watch your videos and was just nodding off to sleep in bed when this video started playing, and you said the grand duke mine. I haven't heard that name since my primary school days, in the late 80s and for a short time I'd get the school bus that would run from Dunolly to Maryborough primary school and the bus stop was across the road from the grand duke and every morning and every arvo there'd be a flock of the biggest geese guarding the old wooden entry gate to the property you couldn't even cross the road towards the gate without them giving you one hell of a warning , I remember the bus driver said something tragic happened there and the geese were the guardians of the lost souls to warn off noisy people from the mine, me and my school mates never got a chance to explore the old mine the geese made sure of that, but good to finally know what happened there thank you for your informative videos, oh and one question was the geese still there on guard when you went there 😅

Great video 'tour of the Victorian gold fields' - very informative. However, I think your title maybe somewhat misleading. Now, I accept it may well by my ignorance, and misunderstanding but, I was expecting to 'Learn how to use Google earth to find gold locations'. I do accept this information you provide can be employed to assist in locating general regions containing gold, you made no attempt, whatsoever, to demonstrate the 'definite statement' claimed within your title. Either, stick to your stated topic, or, choose the title AFTER creating the video, in case it needs to be edited.
