INVADER FROM SPACE - Grandstand Epoch Electronic Game
Here is a trip down memory lane at the first handheld game I had as an early teenager.
Back then £25 paid the Bus fair, Lunch, Invader From Space and a Harrington Jacket…Oh and a box of indoor fireworks.
Since doing this video a ton of memories have come flooding back even down to getting chased of the escalators in the Cleveland Centre.
From memory this will have been around the middle of December 1981.
Merry Christmas

Yes I’m sure Moonraker will ship it to France, thanks for visiting the channel.

I'm sorry I just see that you write it on description!
@@loukas2390 Thanks for visiting the channel.
One of the reasons why Moonraker went with plastic is so they'll fail and you'll have to buy more antennas..... Channel Master makes a lot better mess than that.....Put up an antenna using this Channel Master 40′ Telescoping Antenna Mast. It’s made of 18 ga, galvanized steel which makes it durable, strong, and long-lasting. This Channel Master antenna pole comes collapsed at 9′ and then expands to 40′. It’s easy for do-it-yourselfers to install, so it can be put to use quickly. This pole allows an antenna to sit wherever it’s mounted. It ensures a secure placement for your device. Channel Master 40′ Telescoping Antenna Mast: 18 ga galvanized steel Includes hardware Comes collapsed at 9′ and expands to 40′ Channel Master antenna mount is easy for do-it-yourselfers to install The top diameter is 1-1/4", the second diameter is 1-1/2", the third is 1-3/4", the fourth is 2" and the bottom is 2-1/4" Weight is 43 lbs. Allows an antenna to sit securely wherever it is mounted..
The Moonraker mast seems fine especially for the price. It is also very light for portable work. You can replace the plastic clamps if they ever fail but if you’re careful i find them just fine. I have modified one of them to take more weight and to also almost use it as an antenna, I should really show it in a video. I will have to look up channel master masts but i am guessing they’re only available over in the states.
Do not waste your money on this radio. It should never have been released for sale and basically it should be in the Beta stage. There are much better radios on the market and for equal or less money. It is definitely a packed radio as far as functions and with the ability to be controlled from an App. I owned this radio for roughly two weeks and in that time these are the issues I found with it from an operation point of view. It’s since been returned. What caught my eye on this radio was the range of frequencies it covers, that it can receive Upper and Lower sidebands and the UHF / VHF ability. The other draw was it could be linked to an app. #1 Issue was the muting of the audio when tuning through the frequencies. This to me is a big issue and as far as I saw was yet to be fixed through a software upgrade. In fact many persons say not to perform the upgrade since the patch had issues to the level of “Bricking” the radio, making as useful as a brick. #2 Issue was the unstable receiver. I noticed that tuning into a strong signal on a secondary radio (Yaesu FTdx10) and an external antenna and setting the TR113 to the same frequency, that the radio was tuned lower than the reference radio. Tuning higher using the fine tune control brought the signal in, but when moving away and then back to the same frequency it was not consistent and needed to be adjusted once again. This was repeated over and with differing results. #3 Issue was the external antenna jack. This was a selling point for me being able to connect external antenna’s VHF / UHF through the SMA top connector and shortwave (HF) to the rear of the radio. The radio also has a third input on the top next to the SMA connector for a magnetic (ferrite) antenna that comes with the radio. The jack on the top for this antenna is basically a 3.5mm stereo jack. The rear jack never seemed to make good contact to my external antenna and I was using basically a mono 3.5mm plug / cable / PL 259 connector to the antenna. I can’t confirm, but the top and rear connector on the radio looks to be the same (stereo). The standard for these portable receivers uses mono plugs like the Sangean ANT-60. I found the connection to be loose and finicky. #4 Issue was with the App. Basically the app works as a remote control. It will not provide an audio signal and is only for remove control. The main issue I found was with tuning. The App has an UP / Down button and basically tunes the radio in jumps of 10khz. No where in the app could I find any way to reduce the step lower than 10khz even if the actual radio had the lowest setting possible. There are a lot of reviews of this radio and very few go into issues and how poor of a radio this is. There are other issues with this radio (poor manual, lack of a VHF / UHF rubber ducky antenna, etc.). I've very surprised on the reviews it gets and was partially the reason of deciding to go with it. Invest your money elsewhere in either a Sangean or a Tecsun that has been around for a few years and have proven track records. This radio will probably be replaced by another model leaving you without any support or software upgrades. Its also in my opinion not a good radio for someone starting out in shortwave listening.
@@jimhughes9139 I will say before i answer these questions i agree it has a few flaws. I have actually gotten used to the muting and find the receiver quite stable. The rear jack is probably way too recessed for some plugs or adapters but it is certainly very effective with the right antenna. I also expected a little more with the app but it is definitely helpful. Retekess will definitely be reading your comment and are also looking to implement improvements. Thanks for the comprehensive comment.
Good one
Thanks 👍
Anyone had the radio fixed yet.
Thats mine away back to moonraker to fix the poor tx audio and the s5 signal meter. Fingers crossed 2nd time lucky.

@@gtretroworld they must be set badly from the factory, my 1981 midland 7001 made it look like crap in back to back on air tests, tried astatic and leson desk mics and they lifted audio a little, ever contact i had complained how low the audio was. TINY !!
It certainly is.
I live in Oxfordshire UK and I have an Astroplane, I managed to buy off Ebay a few years ago, it was as new and still in the original box a real barn find, its been up now for a few years and a while back I thought about swapping it out for my old 5/8th wave GAP dipole, an aerial I once got to Perth Australia however I'm glad I ran the test first, the noticeable difference was the amount of QRM the dipole picked up, the Astroplane however was a lot quieter but you could hear far more stations, some way off in the back of the box, fast forward to today and she's still up there, and in fact I went on the low block yesterday (30.12.2024) and despite very little skip I found two Italian stations having a chat so I gave them a call and got a shout back, these stations were in mid Italy and the skip was very low even on 27.555Mhz, anyway I made the hop with a signal strength of 3-5 audio 4-5, the most incredible part was I managed this on just 20 watts USB. Safe to say the Astroplane is definitely staying up.
It is funny you should pop a comment on this video as I was only thinking about these last week. I sold a few pallets worth a good few years ago on eBay and still need to try one up in the new year with another video. Can you believe it is one of the few antennas in my collection that I have never tried. Thanks for visiting the channel.

I’ve definitely seen worse and for the money you can forgive it’s looks.
I seen these on eBay in the past but I was given Astro Wars as and I treasured it and kept the box for it too. I was buzzing when I first clocked it our kid he got munchman which was a fake pacman but was still great to play he also got the LCD game donkey Kong junior which were twin screened. Astro wars display was a vacuum fluorescent display which was cheaper to make than led so vfd's came popular in hi-fi's, radio's, games, video recorders and even ham rigs.
Munchman was brill Dave and still is, I have it in the pit somewhere. The great thing about VFD with gaming was the brightness as at the time Mono LCD was a bit naff. It did eventually take off though especially with the Game boy. You forget VFD was is in all sorts and although it does eventually fade they were super reliable.
@@gtretroworld1 l d game I got was a tomytronic 3D sky attack and that was a big favourite of mine as the batteries lasted ages in it.. Ive had my titan radio for a while now. I had one from the first batch. But it had to go back as i couldn't turn the echo of . I've got a replacement one from the latest batch with all the updates etc. it's a nice little radio. Its not perfect but for the money it works well. The microphone is nice to hold and weighty . Ssb can sound hollow if the audio gain is to high i run mine about number 8 on ssb. As all the modes are adjustable in the menu . I have mine in the hf setting which is all adjustable..at turn on. The only thing i dont like is the clarifier . Especially if your on a zero . Cant seem to just adjust the rx only. . 73s. Nice video. WR456🇬🇧.
Thanks..I also found the HF setting more useful as it really opens the radio up. I am still playing around with it as like you say there is audio settings separate for every mode. I haven’t had it that long but i will make a note of that clarifier issue and check mine.
Hello 👋. Yes I don't know if it's just specific when your on the hf setting. About the clarifier. But I've found it quite odd that you can't adjust just Rx when your on a zero. You have to be in R+T setting in the clarifier setting to get to the zeros . Then of course it tracks in TX as well when you move the clarifier. Bit of a silly one that is. 😔.Unless it's different on the CB band when you turn it on for the different bands ? But I cannot fault the noise reduction circuit it works well here at my location. For the money I like it. Good power . Not a silly amount like the other radios. And sounds good in Rx as well. 73s my friend. Have a great Christmas to you and family. WR456🇬🇧. Richard. @@worldradio456uk5 Thanks for that Richard, I will take that all on board and have a play later. I will mention it tomorrow as i need to speak with them regarding an order. You and your family also have a great Christmas 73 also from the Glorious East.😁
Hey bud. Where abouts are you in the East ? Are you near Norfolk ? 73s bud. 👍
@@worldradio456uk5 Just outside Middlesbrough towards Whitby.
I would be interested to know which port was installed 🤔 whether the whole thing only works with software ❓
I have had all the Pinouts sent for the RG45 socket which includes Data as well as a second mic socket. I will look into this in greater detail in the new year.
@ Great, I'm excited and thanks for the answer, oh yes, I just checked that when I order the device there will be 70€ customs and shipping on top 🥴
@@VOLKZZORN Oh dear that is not good at all, it’s the same when we deal with you guys which is a shame.
@ Yes, it's just a rip-off, it could be so easy if we had a free trade agreement but as long as certain people control us, it's such a shame 🥴
@ Hopefully one day we will get that back but at the moment they seem happy stuffing us.
