The conservative SA government wasn’t interested in keeping The Overland. Vline subsidises it in three year stages. I’d better get a ride on it during 2022. One purpose is to maintain a service to Dimboola, Nhill and Kaniva. Not sure about Horsham. Some seats are kept for these stations at Vline fares.
The A class diesels were mostly designed for hauling passenger trains however when the sprinters entered service and due to rough riding, some went to freight operation before the merger. However many were still hauling passenger trains up until 1997. Even though they only saw use on shorter distance passenger trains ie. Kyneton, Bacchus Marsh and Seymour services. It was a rarerity to see them on passenger trains to Albury and Shepparton, however some did substitute a West Coast S or B class on the Warnambool trains now and then. The only other time A classes ran N class carriages was during the regional fast line upgrades and A66 for two days in a row ran the Shepparton passenger train as part of its ice radio testing
I remember an A unit hauling a passenger service from Geelong to Melbourne in 2012,I swear this is true because I was in the first carriage and looking forward I could see the big circular light that we are all familiar with through the door window.
It was actually Sale to Bairnsdale. Although the signalling assets still had to be regularly maintained due to logging trains still running to Hillside siding. I was the signal maintenance technician from Warragul to Bairnsdale from 1994 to 2002.
Most of the closures were signed off before Jeff Kennett won the election in 1992 as Joan Kirner stated that if her government was to lose the election that the her goverment would blame the Kennett government. If you are wondering how I know this, my father worked on the railways and his job was to end in december after the election had happen, but all his paperworked was signed off in august and the election was held october 1992 therefore Joan Kirner's goverment blamed Kennett for all of the loss of jobs on the railways even tho she was the one that got rid of the jobs.
I don't know what you're on about mate... Kennett announced his plans in 1992 and they were way larger than what ended up happening. Clearly not some sort of thing signed off before the election, that in itself would have been a major scandal. Not to mention it took until 1994 to get rid of the ararat line the last one removed. I've also done much research into this and I have never heard of this anywhere which makes me severely doubt it is true.
@@MetroManMelbourne my father used to come home for 10 yeare prior saying that he might not have a job therefore Kennett can't be blamed. You won't find any documentation, but if you talk to the railway people that lost their jobs prior to the 1992 election, they will tell you the same thing i have said
Damn i missed the live stream shenanigans...5:23 "Their actions were in vain" due to policewoman with superhuman powers forcing people OFF the rails see her unimaginable unrivalled strength in action?
I like your videos about the history/ future of trains in Victoria. I have one suggestion. You need to work on getting your pronunciation of suburb/ town names right. You get some very wrong.
What fool closed lines and stopped passenger service yes the liberals rail is a good way to travel around the great state of Victoria we need passenger train to Mildura
why you telling him to give credit when you stole others identities and dont even have footage on your channel, i thought you would know better MrMango
The Overland should be given to V/line, Victoria basically pays for it already and they’ll actually run it well.
Yeah, it would give another use to the standard gauge N classes, which will soon be replaced by the VLocitys
@@comengsh Temporarily though, the N classes are 10 years older than the NR classes currently pulling The Overland.
@@Nick-kz6dg still, would give them another use.

Kennett was a butcher, not only of country railway services.Whatever happened to the Infected Diseases Hospital in Fairfield, for example?.

very interesting thanks for the info

Kennet moment
Like seriously why the heck did he think closing the barinsdale line was justified
I really don't know, some crap about the avon river bridge that wasn't true when they came around to reopening it
@@MetroManMelbourne how did i just know it had something to do with the avon river bridge lmao
And making the bgo line single track
Interesting I didn’t know much about this time period apart from reinstatement of services to places like Bairnsdale Echuca n that
Standardisation, arguably what killed SA's regional rail. Good thing there is a push for region rail to return.
it'd be good to see SA get some regional trains back such as Whyalla and Murray Bridge services, but who knows
V/line definitely freight.
My favourite freight operator!
Were not the last sets of H cars a further conversion of the failed Harris Trains (Grey Nurses) conversions?
Indeed the last round of H cars were from the Grey Ghost (refurbished Harris) fleet. The remainder were from the regular fleet.
Nice video mate. I never knew that the line from Taralgon to Bairnsdale was closed for a period of time pretty intresting.
Thanks! That was probably the silliest of all the closures to be honest as there was no real reason for it.
@@MetroManMelbourne and the rest of Kennett’s cuts

Great video! Really liked the footage you used.
certainly not mine - credit goes to mick7070 for that

Well done another great post. Congratulations for a very informative series
Look forward to watching it. subscribed.
It is so funny that the railway line to Warrnambool is still calld the west coast line
possibly because it goes to the West Coast of Victoria, and the company was called that because it too went to the West Coast of Victoria!
I thought Kennett would kill the Sprinters but I was told the Sprinter order was too far advanced to be cancelled.
Good video! Have you done ep 4 yet?
yes, it is here: ua-cam.com/video/dm1gg2SHMdU/v-deo.html
Is that Uncle Toby’s building the one along the Sunbury Line?
quite possibly, that footage was from west footscray
that moment when fucking STEAM ENGINES return to regular service
I think that Sprinters run up to Kyneton on the Bendigo line?
They have not regularly since early 2021, but they can if required.
Many words of encouragement
it is never unfair to criticise kennet
Very true
AUSTRALIA NATIONAL GETTING THERE IS HALF THE FUN
Kennett really screwed V Line
Victoria. He screwed Victoria. As did Howard at Federal level.
Jeff Kennet and Steve Bracks 🥰
Huh?
