    It's about time the DVLA are challenged on this as you say if the public can clearly see its a campervan that means that the police are so incomplete that they can't tell its a campervan then maybe they shouldn't be in the job.

    They did the same to me. I followed there information to the book with regards to changing the van to a motor caravan and they came back saying that I needed to make more changes to comply, but did not state what I had to do. My campervan looks more like a campervan than some of the new ones on the market. A fire fighter commented on my video about this and said that he would want to know it was a motor caravan in an accident as it would be fairly clear that I would be carrying LPG. As a van with side windows he would not think about it. The DVLA are playing a dangerous game. My van is insured as a modified vehicle through AIB insurance as a campervan but as a van with side windows. I would not hold my breath on you getting anywhere with the DVLA decision.

      Yes, I had the same thoughts about the LPG. You could raise a case with the Ombudsman see www.ombudsman.org.uk/news-and-blog/news/dvlas-poor-communication-causes-confusion-campervan-owners If more people did this it would highlight the fact that DVLA are still going against the PHSO recommendations and drop them right in it!

    I bought a retired WAV from Motability which was exempt from road tax. When I registered it in my name I found out that on first registration it had been registered as an M1 instead of an N1. This meant that my "Sprinter Panel Van" as it stated in the reg doc was classed as a diesel car and not a van. This attracted road tax of over £700 per annum. I called the DVLA to have it changed, they asked for my Certificate of Conformity, which I didn't have so they refused. I had other EU Certificates of Compliances stating my van's VIN number and it's N1 classification but they wouldn't accept them. I fought them for a year with the help of Mercedes-Benz without any luck until I managed to get a duplicate of my Certificate of Conformity which they accepted so I then demanded a refund of the difference which they did pay me. What a shower of officious b'stards they are. They are not fit for purpose. Keep at them!

  • @richardpaine5923

    DVLA's standard reply is a van with windows. The easiest option would be to accept DVLA's ruling, & insure the vehicle as modified. This must be accepted as insurance. I used Greenlight as they specialise in modified vehicle insurance.

    Makes one wonder why Triumph did not adopt VW beetle style push rod tubes?

    • @daveco1270
      @daveco1270 2 дні тому

      I think there's a guy making adjustable pushrod tubes for Triumphs. I saw a set of them on a UA-cam channel called Dirty Shirt Richter. (He's machinist who does a lot of work for Baxter Cycle's in Iowa.) I'm not sure if they're for sale yet, seems like he's still in the "testing" phase to make sure they work well. I put a T140 head together recently to replace top end gaskets and PRT seals. It was my first time doing any top end assembly and I was worried about getting those seals correct. I was quite happy that she didn't leak when all was said and done.

  • @Segsy59

    Good to see someone doing a video of the intricacies of setting up a triumph cylinder head, far from straight forward, don't know why nobody sells different thickness pushrod tube seals over here, then there's the torqueing down sequence. Good luck and well done.

    Unfortunately after the explosion in self builds during covid, the big motorhome/campervan manufacturers have probably bought off the DVLA so the market doesn't get flooded and lower the price. I managed to get mine classified as a motor caravan back in 2019 but quite honestly its made next to no difference. The road tax is the same, the insurance is pretty much the same and I save about a tenner on the MOT. Speed limits are not a concern, Im always getting overtaken by vans doing 70. There really is very little benefit.

    • @InTheShedUK
      @InTheShedUK 2 дні тому

      It's more about the principle, they set the rules, we follow the rules but they then choose to ignore the rules they set in the first place! The rules changed around 2019 so you probably struck lucky. Speed limits only become a concern when the NIP drops through your letterbox. The old Gatso's are being decommissioned (a survey in 2017 revealed only about half were actually working!) and are being replaced by more discreet digital cameras.

      Started a while before Covid. It started initially as people were changing their vans to beat LEZ restrictions. Putting in basic furniture, enough to change the body type.. then simply removing the furniture allowing to use their vans for deliveries or other things.

      My mate has a van under 3.5 tonnes that he uses for camping. It doesn’t have side windows. He has just been prosecuted by Devon & Cornwall police (driver awareness course) for doing 71mph on a 70mph dual carriageway with central reservation. The basis of the offence is that it is a van NOT a motorhome or camper van. I am not sure if a van with windows would be considered differently, as when he dialled into the course (zoom meeting) all the others present were the same as him, ‘normal’ van used for camping exceeding 60mph on a dual carriageway. So if you don’t think they will prosecute you, I advise caution, as it doesn’t apply in Devon or Cornwall apparently

If the DVLA changed our V5C's as requested to 'motor caravan' in the first place it would save everyone (including the authorities) a lot of time and effort!

    I have now refitted the vape, came to the conclusion that due to the timing marks problem (as noted in the description) and I think one of my 6v coils was playing up. I am now running two 12v coils and all seems fine.

    do yourself a favour, if you're going to replace jets on an old AMAL carb that has done a lot of miles or you're un sure of its history replace the needle jet, its made of soft brass and over time does wear, giving a rich mixture, the stainless needle not so much.Also get genuine parts from burlens like you have as there are three different types of needle jet for monobloc , concentric and mk2 concentric....some ebayers dont know the difference and will send you anything.

      I have since replaced this carb with a new (correct for year) concentric, still running a bit rich even with this (video in playlist). I have an A65 cam fitted so engine is not stock and more experimenting with main jets is required.

      Hi, see setup instructions at 24:00, long press displays 1-001 or 1-002 (depending on current setting) 1 or 2 at the end should be flashing... Short press will toggle between 1 and 2. Long press again to save. Remember you have to go through the complete setup start to finish or changes may not be saved. Hope this helps.

    I feel that you are ignoring the requirement for two windows on at least one side of the van which clearly states that it doesn’t include the driver or passenger door window as stated on the tick box. check list doesn’t seem optional to me.Most people install a smaller window above the bed. More graphics required if you want it to be a motor caravan then you shouldn’t worry that it looks like one.

      Vans with two windows on at least one side of the vehicle have also been rejected see ua-cam.com/video/ArPWFPTiZ5c/v-deo.html as an example. Two windows on one side only also makes their requirement of what a 'vehicle looks like in traffic' a nonsense, one side would look like a camper but the other side (without windows) would just look like a panel van! Also the DVLA state 'The body type may still be changed despite the vehicle NOT HAVING ALL THE MODIFICATIONS listed online.' The requirements also do not state how many or what size graphics are required. If my van was rejected for either of these reasons they should tell me so I can make the changes. The only reason given was that my van is a panel van, which is hypocritical as they accept 'professionally' built vans of the exact same type and model! So even if I spend £££'s on extra windows/graphics or place an illuminated sign on top saying 'I am a campervan' they are still likely to reject, this has happened to other van builders previously, read the Ombudsman's report. The point is the DVLA are going against the Ombudsman report that said the DVLA needs to provide more clarity.
