Renting or even owning premises to work in has a big cost and pulls you down on earnings. It's 11 years since I let my rented workshop go, it was a relief not having that to fund. I retired at 57, 4 and half years back. I don't miss work and all the stress that it entails. I didn't do anything connected with the motor trade. Doing a few jobs for yourself on your own cars seems the way to go. Hourly labour rates kill any jobs dead. Take care Brian.

In my opinion the future is bright for classics! I saw something amazing the other day a black Auntie Rover P4, it looked very solid, and was running like a champ! However what made it really striking was modern upgrades I spotted-led bulbs, slightly lower profile wheels, more modern number plates, all the chrome was painted black, larger modern door mirrors, rear headrests, rear seat belts, electric windows, (how!?) led bulb upgrade on the interior instrument dials and interior lights, dvd screens in the rear of front headrests, modern reverse camera screen in the middle of the dashboard! It looked amazing I saw this late 50s bruiser at night and damn it almost looked strangely modern!

EVs are not winning, actually the big manufacturers that committed to them are now staring down the barrel of multi billion dollar losses and are rowing back the commitment to EVs as demand craters and residual values bomb. Ford are going to lose 5 billion this year, that is what they admit to. The CEO of Toyota has said that EVs will never amount to more than 30% of the global market and I think he will be proven right. Britain will never have the charging infrastructure or power generation infrastructure in place to move to full EV adoption for at least 20 years, if ever. EVs wont go away but will be part of a mix, rather than taking over completely.

It’s time for real classic cars to be given a rating, say for instance only cars made before 1969 are called Real Classes, cars made after 1970 could be called 70s, 80s, 90, classics, and so on peoples ages have nothing to do with classic cars, I mean if you are 25 years old you can own a car made in the 50s like wise you might be 70 and own a car made in 1980s I know one thing if I go to a classic car show in a field I don’t want to see cars made in the 80s or 90s nothing wrong with them put them in the other side of the field behind a fence, I’m generally a 50 / 60s guy possibly mid 70s also, put it this way I like the column change leaver, bench split bench front seat style that ended in 70 / 71 I believe, the 70s American cars Elvis Cars I call them are what I call Classic that Lincoln is one Although elvis liked his Cadillac’s!

You're exactly the type of person who pisses me off, to me any older car that someone loves, works on and keeps on the road has every right to be at a show, you know people have to start somewhere and if they can only afford a 90's car as a start in the classic vehicle scene, fairplay to them. We need all the interest we can get to keep the car hobby from dying out. Snobbery and anoraks are not helpful when you are trying to encourage people to tinker with old cars and bring them to a show. Take offence if you want but not everyone has the £ to have what they would really like, me included.

You should have come along to the Ripon show yesterday, it'd be great to meet you and see one of your Zephyrs. There was a mk IV Zodiac there, sometimes there's a really nice Zephyr 4 that turns up. I think with your cars, people like them for what they are rather than the memories they conjur up. Mk IVs were always rather thin on the ground compared to say, Escorts and Cortinas, so they're less likely to hold nostalgia for most people. Similar to expensive cars like Rolls Royces in a way - but those are still appreciated in a different way.

Personally I think we grew up poor and not many people on the street had cars so we were in awe of the cars that did appear and a spin in a car was an adventure and the memories were made and so the feelings of nostalgia are strong with us. In recent years everyone has a car and cars have become like furniture , not worth getting excited about just a means of getting to where you’re going, we’re as to us the journey was the adventure (once a week if you were lucky)

Well, apart from it being rather difficult to hear the audio of the video I did manage to hear it nonetheless - and yes, there does seem to be a change in the emphasis of what is a "classic car". It is very much a case of nostalgia for things we saw (or rode in) when we were younger and of course, as we die and are replaced by younger people, what they have nostalgia for will change. I'm seeing this in other interests too; a Mark IV means nothing to a lot of people but, say, a BMW E30 will. I don't hold with people saying a twenty year old car like an MGF is a "classic car" - it's just an old car that's survived in my opinion. Also, where will the skills for repair be? I can't weld, but I'm good with electrics and even electronics - and it'll be electronics that'll kill many an older car now. For me, I'll always associate a Lincoln like yours with the TV detective Frank Cannon, rather like I associate a Buick Century with Kojak!
