The TI-99 in 1982: Dawn of the Golden Age
In a bit of a follow-up to an earlier video on TI's greatest home computer hits of the pre-1982 era, I take a look at how everything changed for the TI-99 in the year that followed, as the TI-99 entered its golden age.

10 Reasons the TI-99 Still Rocks the Retrocomputing World

I'm back! In my big return, I take on an equally big question. Namely, what makes the TI-99 a great retrocomputing platform, over four decades after its debut. I offer 10 reasons why I think it makes sense to look to the TI-99 as a fascinating, accessible early home computer for either work or play in the present day, even for those who haven't worked with it before.

TI-74 BASICalc: TI's Last BASIC Computer, in 1985
Переглядів 1,9 тис.Рік тому
The TI-74 is a machine which learns from the mistakes and fixes the problems faced by TI's Compact Computer 40 and TI-99 before it. It still features a TI BASIC largely compatible with TI-99 Extended BASIC and a TI CPU in TI's TMS7000 series, and is TI's last attempt to sell an in-house BASIC computer running on in-house hardware, before abandoning TI BASIC once and for all with the TI-95 in 19...

The 10 Best TI-99 Games Before 1982: Early Era Classics 1979-1981

When the TI-99/4A released in 1981, the TI-99 already had a pretty nice game library on offer, which TI and Milton Bradley had been adding to since the debut of the 99/4 in 1979. This is my look at the best of the first TI-99 games, from that 99/4 era, up to the first holiday season of the 99/4A, when the system really started to take off. Wow, I had totally forgotten about this game! When I was a kid I found what I thought was a bug and called the support number. I was connected to one of the authors and we talked for a long time! Later I wrote a level editor for TI-Runner after reverse engineering the save format, and then after college I worked for a while in video games, including writing the MMORPG Meridian 59 (which I still run). So cool that this is still around.

    Hi PixelPendant (and anyone else reading this). I can see from your channel that you are an avid gamer on the TI99/4a and it was by watching one of your videos that I became aware of Harry Wilhelm's XB256. I wanted to write a game taking the opportunity for parallax scrolling and I couldn't think of any game that did it better than MOON PATROL. I used to love Moon Patrol in the arcades but I felt that Atarisoft had under-used the capabilities of the TI99/4a. for example , the sprites were not only blocky (like magnify,4) but also monochrome. so I thought I would have a go at writing a Moon Patrol clone primarily for classic 99 in extended basic Plus XB256. the result is LUNA EXPLORER, if you would like to have a look at it I have posted the files on AtariAge Forum. here is the link forums.atariage.com/topic/366553-luna-explorer-a-better-moon-patrol-in-xb256/

    Do you recall, or own, a Space Invaders-like game that was included with the Editor Assembler package in addition to Tombstone City? It ran in both Extended Basic and Assembler and obviously the latter was much faster. The aliens trickled down from the top of the screen, I think falling off a ledge to start. As you shot them they turned into "bricks," blocking their path down. I think they also sped up as you eliminated more of them. You would win by trapping the aliens above the wall you created as you shot them. I cannot find any mention of this game anywhere and I cannot remember the name. I played it endlessly in the summer of '84 or '85. Sadly, I sold my whole TI setup when I bought a Compaq 286 to replace it around '88. I had the PEB and a third party RAM Disk. Tunnels of Doom, Car Wars, and a snake game like Hustle that I can't remember the name were my other favorites. Did all of my college papers on TI-Writer, learning to use escape codes for fonts and special formatting.

    Just came back to this as it's such an interesting one. Am I the inly one that wishes there could be a crowdfunded full cart/box release of Shnozola seeing as it got so far as even having full packaged prototype etc. I think that would be so great to see and the game looks great to me, Q*Bert meets Pacman🙂

    Why can't an adapter card be used to let you use a TMS9900 in place of a 8086 as the Data/Address lines are multiplexed as on the TMS9900 except for the last 8 bits and replace the BIOS chips with the ROM chips out of the TI99/4A if not why not.

    The TI-99/4A was my very first computer. I had gotten it after some friends had gotten the original TI-99/4 (without the "A") which had the chiclet keyboard. I got it mostly because I wanted to write scripts but was also interested in the programming aspects of it. I never got that far with that although I did eventually get ambitious enough to write a metronome program which I hoped might be useful for those playing music. It might even still exist in someone's collection. I was more interested in trying to do something productive with it while my youngest brother only cared about playing games. As far as writing scripts I'm sure you could still use it for that purpose although you'd have to come up with a way of getting your files to other computers for proper formatting. Most of the peripherals were out of reach for me although I might have finally gotten the peripheral expansion box toward the end along with the RS-232 card and disk controller. The closest to this do it yourself experience today is desktop Linux. I found this video quite enjoyable.

    The VIC-20 versions of the Scott Adams text adventures had speech synth support, via a speech synthesizer with TTS that connected via serial. It's too bad the TI99 versions didn't support speech synthesis--although, understandable, as it would have taken a lot more effort and expense to develop and include a TTS in the cartridge. I wonder if anyone has hacked speech synth support into the TI99 Scott Adams text adventure engine.

  • @mibnsharpals
    @mibnsharpals 2 місяці тому

    Yes, the TI99(/a) is an example of how you can ruin a design. 1. Take a 16-bit CPU that even allows multitasking, just by changing the workplace register. All other registers were in RAM!!! And connect it to an 8Bit video chip and transfer all data through it. To make it worse, don't write the basic interpreter directly in machine code, but develop a VM that can execute bytecode. What the computer can do becomes visible when you install the 32k RAM expansion and start a reasonable basic. Well, a fast Z80 or 6502 could still outpace him. But when it came to multiprogram execution, the TMS was superior. The CPU is actually a smaller version of a MINI computer (no, not a very small computer, but the performance was above the micro. )

    I've recently rejoined the Chicago TI Users Group and wanted to thank you for your kind words about my TOD Editor. A short time after writing it, I moved away from the TI community, got a full time job, got married and had a few kids. I had no idea that the editor became so popular. Sure I received some royalties from Asgard but the checks were small and came over many months. They never reported to me the sales numbers so I just moved on with my life. It was many years later that I discovered that so many people enjoyed it and made so many excellent games with it, many far superior than my own. Thank you for covering this but I also wanted to let you know that I have restarted the once famous monthly Chicago TImes Newsletter as well as recreated a more up to date web page for the group. I hope you don't mind but I have featured more than a few of your excellent videos links in the newsletter as well as the web page. I'd love to be able to publish either an interview with you or a short article about your experiences with the TI and your amazing UA-cam page. If this may be of interest to you, please contact me at chicago.ti994a.usersgroup@gmail.com and btw the Chicago TI User Group web page is www.chicagotiug.org Thanks!
