Back in April 2019 Scott started Big Guy Boards. Initially a UA-cam surf review channel for surfers that need high volume boards, it quickly gained traction. With the addition of the Big Guy Boards Facebook group and a growing Instagram presence, we now have a varied and diverse Big Guy Boards community. If you are a bigger surfer, carrying an injury, lacking fitness, progressing down from bigger boards, or just like high volume surfboards. Scott's mission has always been the same; to get more people surfing.
After growing the Big Guy Boards community, Scott and the rest of the team have started a surf shop. www.bigguyboards.com/
As with many surfers within this niche, Scott has always found it difficult to source the right equipment. Big Guy Boards has been created as a central hub, where you can easily source the right gear to suit your needs.

We had a run of swell as i started riding this board. I've put together a VLOG of a few days riding it back to back. This is a good way to record my initial thoughts on this board. I often speak to beginner surfers that are finding it difficult to transition onto a smaller surfboard. In almost every example this is because the surfer is using the wrong equipment. For years I fo...

How to adjust surfboard volume in your quiver
What boards (dins) were you two riding?
Do you reckon it would suit small ish 2-4ft, but quite fast and steep waves? Another big guy not sure what I should get to suit my local break
I wouldn't take my 6'4 out in steep waves any bigger then chest high. A shorter one might fit in the pocket more but it's definitely a dedicated groveler so any decent size or steep waves shoulder - head high + are no good in my experience.
@@BigGuyBoardsSurfshop thanks so much for replying, I reallly appreciate it! I suppose my follow up is there anything you could recommend for that type of wave for a bigger guy?
If you're a big guy & the waves where you live arent great most of the time, just learn to SUP surf. You'll 10x your wave count, get longer rides, & you can go for a paddle on the flat days.
I tried SUPing but didn't really like it. I have a decent high volume grovel board now that gets me in the water when the waves are junk
I have the same board and want something to step up to when the waves are good. Im a bigger guy at 6’1 210lbs. What do you use for your performance board?
I've reviewed the Lost EL Patron, Pyzel Ghost and Matta Driver XL. All great options. Or something like the Lost Uber XL or Matta 2825 which I've reviewed if you are looking for more of an all round / hybrid shortboard
@@BigGuyBoardsSurfshop ok thanks a lot man! I will look into those!
@@bignickenergy2042 Have a look and let me know if you have any more questions.
How does the Lost Hydra compare to Firewire sweet potato 2 for grovelling?
Hard to compare as the hydra was low 40L. My Sweet Potato is about 57L. Both great boards though
What about compared with the Puddle Jumper? Does the Hydra have more lower end? I have chest and over waves covered but need something for the junk other than my longboard. Really stuck between these two
@jewittian I found the hydra was better in smaller waves then the puddle jumper, which started to work for me in about chest high. For me now, I bump up the volume considerably when groveling. I'm currently riding a 6'4 sweet potato at 57L. I did a review on it recently.
Awesome review!! Thanks a lot!
I agree. I buckled my 1st libtech. Surfing at Fort Point on a small day. But i believe in their product that i bought 2 more. But the worst is its fin box. Both of my 2 year old board had issues with the box. I was told by my repair guy that they have low quality fin box and he showed me the difference side by side. Don’t buy it. I warned you.
I like the Alpha's in my sweet potato but will be keen to try your set out.
Great review and love your insight and perspective in your reviews. I’m 6 ft 1 and 210 lbs so great to see another big guy out there and helping all of us while having fun. Keep up the amazing work.
Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
What size are you riding in the video?
hi, I ve foung 1 of these pretty cheap, I bit oversized for me of about 2- lt. Do you think it will be still a good option or there are newer better shape around? ex, sweet potato2, hydra? i m 6ft 83 kg, and i ve found a 5.10 ssb.thank's
All the boards you mention are great for small waves. The SSB is similar to the Lost Puddle Jumper. Sweet Potato grovels slightly more with less top to bottom. Hydra somewhere in the middle.
Thank s. Apologize for my very late reply. Looking for a Mediterranean weak waves type of board, but still with performance, this should be fine. It will go together with a Chilli 6.2 rare bird for better conditions. The website suggest me the 5.9 but the 5.10 is available and cheaper, do you think if would be a big issue while looking for a skaty loose performance feel on the tail? Thank s a lot for the help
@marcopaoletti5420 from my experience I would always go with more foam in small waves. I hope this helps. Tune me up for any more help. I hope you get the right board
@@BigGuyBoardsSurfshop thank s!! I just got frustrated with a flyer to swallow board that I bought recently and I cannot click with... Seems huge manouvering it, probably just because it hold too much and the tail sink instead of being reactive when pushing for acceleration. Thank s for the advices
Nice review, thank you! The best one so far that I have seen.. I am trying to decide between the 6'6 or not... There is no 6'2 option where I live. But I am coming from a 7'0 Wave Bandit soft top. I have beens surfing all my life but had several years off due to surgeries and I am 55 years old. The soft top feel like a tank to me now So I want to get this same board. I am 1.81 tall and 70 kilos. I think it should work well. I live in Chile and we have amazing waves all year round and usually almost too big... Lol
Im thinking of putting MR twin fins in and just have a large fin as the centre fin
Goliath fins are worth checking out: www.bigguyboards.com/collections/goliath-xxl-fins Great customer reviews.
Hi there, how do we contact you about purchasing a board, Im interested in the Goliath 6'3 bigger volume.
Hi. Visit my website. bigguyboards.com
Great review bud 👍
Thanks 👍
Yo. Love this mate! I've been on the 6'2" since bouncing back from my shoulder surgery. It goes in such a big range of surf conditions and is definitely the closest thing I've ridden to a proper short board. It's my only board and goes real good. Word homez!
Thanks mate. Yeah I knew you ride one. I'll have to try out your 6'2 at some point
Great vid Scott 👍👍
I got a 6’2 at 52 liters and wow is it a big boy. I bought it to replace my long board in tiny sloppy conditions. I only got to ride it once and it blew me away. The surf was chest to head , hollow and thumping. I was getting in early and speed was amazing. I couldn’t believe how maneuverable the board was and how well it locked into hollow waves. The Glenn Pang FCS twin plus one fines are amazing fins and worked excellent with this board. The hold drive and maneuverability was spot on with this set up. I am 5’9 and 205 (53 years old) and I have been surfing a long time. I am guessing that the 5’10 or 5’8 might end up being the perfect size for me. Only time will tell.
Yes, I'd love to try a smaller one. I've also just got a dominator 2 so excited to see how that goes
@@BigGuyBoardsSurfshopwhat size is the Dominator 2? I have been wanting to try that board. I hope you are going to be doing a review soon.
@DavidJones-yl9kk 6'4. Just got it so need to surf it a bit but there will be a review
Sounds like the 6'4 is just as maneuverable
What would you rather....this or the Sweet Potato???
Sweet Potato as a groveller. The Pod Mod in 6'2 as a daily driver
The mightly P-land!
I just got one big rig, cannot express how stoked I get from this one. I love this board so much! Defo agree every single word you said about this board! Speedy, strong rail engagement, easy to paddle, just a dream board coming true!
I use the hs1 large fins on the rnf retro makes the board easier to pivot
Hello🤗Was this the 31‘inch version?
Hi. At the time I got this I'm pretty sure it was the only size available. From my experience any longer wouldn't work due to the flex. I wouldn't like to ride it any shorter. Do you know what the size options are and I'll check what size I have
Ok thank you, i saw 31 or 32 or 33 on some pages…only 31 was available…but maybe wrong…🤷🏻♂️
Comparing different size fins with different constructions and overall template differences.....not sure this is a good comparative test.
Most of the ct guys are 130-180lbs so massive fins are not needed... Big guys doing big turns bigger fins are truly appreciated 🤙🎯👍 aloha
Thanks. Yeah, keel fins are usually sold in one size, which doesn't suit bigger surfers
Almost every surfer in the CT uses large fins tho, even some of the girls.
Amazing review.
Thanks
Apples to oranges comparison. The no doubt far, far stiffer fibreglass Goliath fins vs the flexy recycled fisherman's plastic nets Alpha controllers which are only suited to light weights. Crispy apple vs soft orange. If you had used a set of fibreglass controllers it would be a more fair comparison. For a big guy I found the Alphas that came in a used board I bought were like using wet noodles as fins.
Fair point. The main focus of the test was sizing but I may shoot a follow up
They're looking great!
Thanks. I'm really pleased with them

I’ve had the hyperfreak 5/4 for a little over two months and the zipper has broke on two separate occasions. I have pretty broad shoulders/upper chest and the same thing happened to me. I need to get a reinforcement at a repair shop like you did. Such a bummer
Combe Martin on low tide when everything else is blown out!
I weight 97kgs I’m at intermediate level on the mid lengths. Should I be looking at a 41L fish?
Hi. Yes that sounds about right but you need to factor in ability and the waves you are riding. Do a search for 'surfboard volume calculator'. You input some info and get a recommended volume
@@BigGuyBoardsSurfshop sure have, always wanting to get other opinions too. Stoked to find a channel where presenter is of my weight too, getting sick and tired of watching reviews where anything above a 5’4 is considered too big…
Hi, Have you reviewed or tried the hyperfreak fire 5/4? Cheers
Hi. No I haven't tried the fire. It looks good though.
Great review (but , with all due respect awfully annoying with the nauseating "bad" anytime you say one bad egg.
Hi Scott, nice board review with the combination footage of conditions thrown in . I'm 6.3 100kg and ride the 5.8 and for what it's worth I'd definitely recommend trying out some smaller sizes like the 5 10 or 6.0 . I tried a friend's 6.0 SP and found that there was no advantage over the 5.8 in wave catching ability, but the performance downgrade was considerable plus the extra volume was a bit problematic in comparison. Seen a few minters on second hand surfboards for sale in your area , would definitely recommend going smaller , you wouldnt regret it .
Thanks for the feedback. The initial idea was to use this board as an alternative to a longboard. On small days my recommended volume doesn't provide enough lift and speed. After surfing it a bit I was surprised how well it goes in better conditions. But I would definitely like to try a smaller one.
I have the 6’2 and was thinking that might be true after looking at the 5’10 and 5’8. But I got an absolutely unreal deal on a used 6’2 so I definitely cannot complain. On the 6’2 you just need to make sure you are on the back of the stomp pad.
Great review always been intrigued about the new sweet potato as I had the old round tail version. Was wondering if you’ve ever tried a McCoy nugget as there design is to be ridden with higher volume
I haven't tried the nugget, but have heard good things about it
Would you have gone up to 6'2"? or would that have bogged the board down. We are literally same height and weight.
From memory, the board felt quite slow and stiff for me. I like a fast loose, skatey feel in smaller wave boards. I can't remember if I was riding the Goliath fins at this point, but a Goliath XL quad set might have helped with this board.
I got a 6'0" Sweet Potato; not quite a 6'4" like your last vid, but I like it. Maybe getting this is overkill then. I was just thinking have something for as junky as it could get so as never to be out of the water@@BigGuyBoardsSurfshop
@redtydefx the 6'4 sweet potato is much more skatey, faster and easy to turn. Although it's bigger goes much better in small waves
As a guy that’s only about 20lbs lighter than you I can’t believe you are riding this big of a sweet potato. I have ridden the 5’2 and 5’4 with no issues.
It is intended as an alternative to a mal. I find it hard to ride anything below chest high on my usual volume.
@@BigGuyBoardsSurfshop I personally think you're doing well riding such a small volume board. In general, people underestimate the impact of increasing weight on things like wave-catching
When will people realise big boys needs big boards
@@thebluewren I’m all for more volume. That size board is essentially the same as a fun shape type board. The problem with that shape is the larger boards do NOT surf as well as the smaller ones. You can actually feel the board rock on the center where the double concave meets. It ends up feeling like you’re catching a rail and threw off your surfing big time. I own a 5’3 baked potato and at 225 it rides amazing. I’ve ridden it in 5’5 and 5’7 and it’s the same thing. You feel the board rocking and it’s a very awkward feeling that hinders your surfing not help it.
Love the videos. Just stumbled across them. One thing you didn’t mention was the width. As a bigger guy myself I have always ridden boards a little smaller than what I “should” based on size. But abilities allowed me to surf smaller boards. The widths on a grovel board can make or break the board. Especially depending on how the bottom is shaped. For instance the FireWire baked potato. At 5’11 230 I ride it in a 5’3 @34.6 liters (if I can remember correctly). I have also ridden friends boards in the same board just in a 5’5 and the 5’7. With that deep double v through the tail the center acts like a pivot point. On the wider boards with more volume, you really feel it rock from rail to rail and it doesn’t move nearly as smoothly as you want it to. Dropping down to the narrower board you don’t feel it and you can surf the board that much better. It’s usually the width with the larger more volume type boards that make it not work well.
Some excellent points on width and bottom contours.
Whats your weight my friend? Im on east coast of US. Nj specifically we have good waves fall winter and spring and occasionally in the summer. Im not close to the beach so i only get out 3-4ft and bigger Im 230lb 6ft. been riding a KONA 6-4 for waves waist and up to OH,40 litres. I snapped it last night. Any thoughts on "average joe"? One of my options
I'm about 112kg. I haven't ridden the average Joe but looks like a good board
@@BigGuyBoardsSurfshop dude i greatly appreciate your response. In a pinch because i snapped my shortboard i reluctantly picked up a Channel Islands "wave hog" 7'8"/21-3/4/2-3/4. Took it out yesterday in head chest to head and ill say it was pretty maneuverable being im heavier. It felt fast paddling but i felt slower at the entry point. Once on the wave it was pretty sick. Fast smooth and loose enough for a bigger dude. Another swell should be here by weeks end so im looking forward to that. Thanks again dude. I appreciate your content
So can you duckdive it?
Hi. Yes, I didn't have any trouble duck diving
you are awesome bro!
Thanks.
Hey mate, great review. Followed the link about the calculations, wondering how big a 400nm wave would be? Like waist height?
More broadly, how would you work out wave height to newton meters?
Looks like Surfline just added wave energy in kj 😮
Wave height and energy are not linear proportions. A tall wave could be gutless. A small wave could be very powerful.
Yes he is back , great video 👍
Thanks. Got a couple more lined up if I can find time to film them.
Loved this review, had a sweet potato and loved it, I went onto a chumlee which I love.
I'd like to try a chumlee
great rewiew, waiting for the fins in france 😉

Cool, if you have opportunity to test aipa big boy , Will be great 😊
Aipa big boy. I love this board, I am 230. Try it ❤❤❤. Downey California. Big boy board.
I'd like to get my hands on one
I just got one - I’m same weight, mine’s 7’0. Great paddler! Only surfed it twice in gutless waves and still trying to work out fins…
this versus the hydra? thanks
I owned very different volume for both boards so hard to comment. I would own smaller or bigger versions of both boards as they were both great. I expect the Hydra is more fun in lower volume and the Sweet Potato is better as it gets to the top end of stock volume options.
