Bear Bones Fishing
Canada
Приєднався 8 бер 2022
My name is Mike Herbert and I'm a fishing guide based out of Southwestern Ontario, Canada. I target walleye in the St. Clair River and Lake Erie primarily, but like to catch other fish too!
Tips for Fishing with Kids
I went out with my youngest daughter on this outing and needed to pivot our plan due to bugs and a less than ideal bite. We managed to keep spirits high and have a good time by following a few simple tips I follow when fishing with kids.

Early Morning Lake Erie Walleye - Using Dipsy Divers
Переглядів 91521 день тому
My friend and I headed out on Lake Erie for some early morning walleye! We used Dipsy Divers and a variety of spoons to get on the fish, and boy did we ever! In this video I also describe the various sizes of Dipsy's I use, as well as settings, line lengths, and spoons. This one was a few years in the making. In the past my dad and I have been unsuccessful in jigging up a lake trout on Lake Wanapitei near Sudbury, Ontario. That all changed Canada Day weekend 2024. A Seldom Used Technique for Walleye on the North Shore of Lake Erie
Great video! I have fond memories of fishing with my father when I was young. I now fish with my 3 children almost every week! I am truly blessed.
Hi do you ever use tadpole diver?
don't bring them,is the best tip.
Top Speed? How does it do in big waves/wind?
Top speed I've gotten is 44 mph. I've been out in 3 foot chop and even larger rolling waves. Boat handles those incredibly well, just have to take it easy and play the throttle.
I have fond memories of fishing as a kid. I eventually stopped for whatever reason. I'm now 37 and decided to get my fishing license. I've taken my 6 year old daughter fishing a few times now and it feels great to be back out in nature relearning how to fish with her.
Great video. Good see kids out fishing. My daughter is my fishing buddy too. We fish the same area.
Great video Mike! That is such a great name “Juniper”. I learned all these lessons this year. My boys are good for about 2-3 hours on the boat… a little bit more if I bring the iPad, a little less if we aren’t getting any fish. lol
going out Friday. Any advice? How deep to start trolling? how fast? etc.
I'd head out till you hit 65 feet of water. Troll between 65 and 68 feet. I'm usually going around 2.4 to 3.0 mph. Spoons and Ripplin Redfins have been great! Adjust the depth of your dipsies or downriggers depending on what depth in the water column you're marking the fish. I've caught them from 15 feet all the way down to 60 feet on some days. I may be heading out Friday as well. Hope to see you out there!
@@bearbonesfishing Nice, hope to see you too. We are in a wilker 17' 4's company. Do you have a marine CB?
Great video Mike!
@@Joe_Duchon thanks Joe!
Great Vid, what rods and reels do you use, thanks
I use the Okuma Pro Magda 30 DXT reels and Okuma Classic Pro Great Lakes Trolling Rods, a 7.5 foot (inside rod) and 9 foot (outside rod).
Looks like a great day out on the water.
Mike, great video as always! Is Erie rough (Waves) a lot or conditions seem to always pretty good?
@@roberthunt1788 I'd say way more rough days than there are flat conditions. That said, depending on your level of comfort, you can get out quite a bit, you just might need to take it slow. But with any of the great lakes, always erh on the side of caution. When in doubt, just sit out!
My SOP now is trolling with leadcore and marking schools of deep fish with the GPS. Then when I have a half to full dozen waypoints I go back and jig them. I use mostly tube jigs, jigging raps, Acme V-Rods, and heavy jigging spoons like Colt Snipers.
@@tuiflies5869 that's a great way of going about it. I actually cycled thru most of the lures you mentioned. That day they had no interest in anything but the plain jig and plastic. Do you use the jign raps and blade baits in specific conditions?
Keep the burbs, they taste great
What a great moment to capture with your Dad!
What live target mount are you using ?
I've got the GeigerTech Marine Mega Mount
Nice seeing out there Sunday. Bit crazy comming into the slip with the kids tournament going on.
Nice meeting you too
Just found your channel nice video
Thanks!
That’s awesome! Congrats!
This just made my day! Thanks Clayton!
Love the excitement!
just found your channel, subscribed plan on fishing erie this fall. my boats a bit small so i will need to pay attention to thee waves excellent content thanks for posting
Looked like you went back to the planer board at the end?
Yes. After I went out to deeper water, I went back to the planer board.
The way I see it, if I get a good look at it and I could have conceivably landed it, it’s as caught as I need it to be. Just gonna let it go anyway.
Are you trolling the the big engine or bow mount? What are you doing to keep the boat running straight
I'm using the main motor to control speed. It has troll control which is a neat feature. I can adjust the speed up and down in 100 rpm increments, so I can dial in the speed. Then I use the bow mounted trolling motor to control direction. I set a waypoint and adjust the trolling motor speed (usually around 20 to 30% power) so it can steer the boat in the right direction. It's pretty much like having auto pilot.
What make and model is the new boat?
Lund Alaskan 2075
Great video, Mike!
Always great info. What rods do you use for trolling. Thanks
I use Okuma Classic Pro GLT's
Some good fishing 💪🏻
Thanks 👍
Whenever he says “what?” I wanna say, “yeeaaaah!”
What rods and line are you running for that heavier bouncer. Thats my fishing spot, but always done better jigging that pulling harnesses
I use 7.5 foot Daiwa Accudepth rod with an Okuma Magda Reel with 40 lbs. braid. The setup is overkill for dragging harnesses. I use those rods to pull Dipsy Divers on Lake Erie. But they work perfectly fine, and it saves me from buying more rods and reels 🤣. A 7 foot medium heavy bait casting combo with 15 lbs. braid would work just as well.
I've never ever seen jigging rap being used on the SCR. Good to see other options are out there
If you're looking for another alternative, blade baits are also pretty good. I like those in the fall. Usually when the water starts to get really cold and if the bite turns a bit negative.
I'm really liking this model Lund. You have it setup perfectly.
Nice fish 🤟🏼
Thanks 👍
Stained water helps out a lot during the day, nice video!
Nice catching, Mike! I have some of those. Will have to give them a try.
Way to go, Mike - CRUSHED ‘em!!
Great video, once again Mike. Tons of fish and size doesn’t matter. It’s all great table fair. Cheers,
Great time on the water... but sitting in the rain is only fun for so long, lol. The small mouth sure like to fight good.
Now I can fish with 2 rods, what rod holders do you use Mike and are you happy with them.
I use the Scotty 230 rod holders. I like them a lot. They get a bad rep sometimes cause they're a plastic, but I've used mine to troll with dipsy divers in years past and never had any issues.
Out of curiosity, how early do you start in the morning?
My personal preference is to be on the water 30 minutes before sun up. It's bright enough that I can see clearly on the ride out, but still relatively low light conditions. On this specific morning, I started a bit later. I have a hunch that the overcast skies helped keep the fish active later into the morning.
2 rods for walleye in the lake?
Yes. Based on the Ontario regulations you can troll with 2 lines in Zone 13 (Lake Huron). The MNR also changed the regulations this year stating you can use 2 lines in the St. Clair River as well.
Are you just drifting with the current ?
I'm going just a bit quicker than the current. I had my trolling motor set to 20% thrust. Just enough extra speed to keep my bow pointed in the right direction and keep the spinners spinning.
What an awesome and wholesome video! Thanks for sharing Mike!
Awesome video...awesome boat! Congratulations on your new purchase!!
Me either.
Walleyes are established up here in the PNW, but hardly anyone fishes for them. Oh well, more for me!
This would be the perfect west coast boat if west coast people weren’t so afraid of rivets.
That’s incredibly fascinating Mike, thank you for sharing!
Thanks for this video. Very informative. We're way up in the east and the walleye fishing doesn't usually "turn on" until mid summer. I've got a boat this year and can't wait to get out.
in fisherman walleye magazine showed the migrations and wish I could find that magazine. its from way back like early 90's?
