HA1G actually feel good in the hand. Can tx/rx on 2m and 70cm ham bands in addition to GMRS band.
Can transmit? Is there an unlock sequence? I know it can receive.
@@HOAHamRadio new firmware from Retevis web site v1.01.10.005 give better display (white digits on blue background), to TX/RX on 2m and 70cm, first press #LOCK until a lock symbol shown on the top line, then press 6 digits 123456, then press #lock again to make the lock symbol disappear (there should be a red exclamation symbol on the top right). Now it can transmit/receive on 2m and 70cm
Thanks for this!
@ sequence: #lock 1 2 3 4 5 6 #Lock. When the sequence entered correctly, you will see a symbol ! next to the battery symbol. That sequence must be enter every time the radio is powered on.
Another awesome video! Thanks so much!
Thanks for the view and kind words.
Great job.
Thanks for taking a look at the channel.
well, now… that isn’t a battery you take on a SOTA expedition! 😂 Thanks, Bob, for your reviews.
LOL, not even POTA unless you need some serious capacity. "Small" is a relative term. Thanks for the view and comment.
Thanks for making the video. The CHA SURVEYOR-A is a part every amateur should have in their field gear bag. My thoughts on Chameleon Antennas overall: I'm extremely satisfied with their quality. It's not inexpensive, but it will last a lifetime. It's my preference to buy things once that will never break/fail so naturally I own quite a bit of Chameleon gear. Home Depot and others sell tripod adapters, but they are not even in the same league as the CHA SURVEYOR-A. 73.
I appreciate the feedback. I'm a buy once cry once type of person, so when I make purchase choices, I don't ignore the price, but it is not the main consideration. I will put off a purchase until I can afford the best quality; it pays off in the end.
Nice video Dude, thanks for sharing. What lovely toys you have :-)
I do have some lovely toys, I'm blessed. Thanks for checking out the channel.
I have to wonder if there is a resistive component in that antenna. The fact that the SWR goes below and stays below 2:1 for 7-28 MHz continuous. I would expect the SWR between “resonant” spots to go higher. It seems to work well enough anyway, and if losing a little efficiency gives extra flexibility, that may be worth it in some applications. Great video. Thank you for adding data points.
No resistive component in the antenna. Just VERY well manufactured!
This was great, thank you! I would love to know more about you're set up to use the separate SDRPlay receiver along with your transmitter. I'm looking to do a similar thing but don't know how to go about it. Anyway, great stuff, cheers!
The SDR set up requires and MFJ relay switch...which of course is no longer available. There is a new manufacturer I am meeting with at Hamcation early February. I am gonna buy / test one of their switches and, assuming all goes well, post a "how to" video. It is a frequent question I get. Hold tight....
@@HOAHamRadio Oh, excellent, thank you! I can't wait to hear what you find out. Cheers!
New ham question...Can you place this antenna the other way (ie place the end of the wire on top of the mast, and the part that connects with the coax down into the tree)? I am assuming the coax is part of the antenna that needs to be up then if based on your install? Love your channel Bob. Gives me many ideas on what I can possibly do in my HOA area. Thanks in advance. 73😉
Many people deploy this antenna with the feed at the bottom as you have suggested. It may impact performance a bit, but from what others have stated, it is still an affective antenna...either way.
Is that about the same as the Chameleon Emcom III ?
There are two Emcomm III products; specs vary on all three antennas.
No - The CHA EMCOMM III id a broadband antenna while the CHA LEFS 8010 (and the 4010) are Half Wave End Fed antenna. They're different because the 8010 is resonant on multiple frequencies while the EMCOMM III not really.
Thank you so much! Makes total sense.
blooper bob… bwa ha ha … I like either bob. thanks for what you do!
Appreciate the feedback. This video has 9 "Thumbs Down" where most of my videos get 1 to 2...somebody doesn't like it. I guess they don't have to watch if they don't want.
really appreciate the detailed videos Bob!
Appreciate the view and feedback; I enjoy doing this and sharing my findings.
Bob great video. This antenna does what it says it's going to do and ideal for situations like yours (and mine). Keep up the great work !
It certainly has piqued my interest; getting all those bands resonate is compelling.
I really enjoyed the quick INSTALL unedited! Straight to the point and it shows that it can be done under 20 minutes!
Under 20 minutes, with me yacking rather than installing for most of that time. Such an easy install, and WOW on the performance.
I love your channel. You help a lot of people that have challenging conditions due to restrictions etc.
Thanks, that's exactly why I do it, in hopes it helps others.
Great video, thank you for sharing. I make my own QRP 49/1 HWEF with 63 to 64ft of wire. They are cut for 10, 15, 20 & 40mtrs and all below 1.1:6. I haven't tried for 80, but will try one on my next batch run. Thanks again 🎉
Appreciate you stopping by for a look and comment.
What radio are you using to make the contacts in this video?
Contacts are being made on the IC7300; the panadapter screen behind me is coming through my SDRPlay receiver
@ Ah, that explains a lot. Thank you very much. And keep up the good work. Polished and blooper videos are both appreciated and each have their place.
I am SO envious of your soft ground. When I'm anywhere away from home I have to bring a cordless drill and an auger bit to drill a hole in our NV rock hard ground to insert my portable vertical. And, I'm surprised you can get away with even your minimalist antenna in an HOA neighborhood!
Yes, soil is my friend here for sure. And I agree, I have been fortunate so far, no one has made a give deal out of my wires.
I run SDRplay as a "panadapter" as well what SDR switch are you using ? Great Vid BTW ! I wonder what that antenna would look like with the feed point down low and the end of the radiator up high..
I use the MFJ SDR switch, which of course is no longer available. Searching for a replacement and have my eyes on something new to market. If its any good, I'll be doing a vid on it in a few months.
Hey Bob, could you let us know what would happen if you use this same wire with Chameleons 25' whip. Would the length of wire need to be changed? Would performance increase? So many things a new video could answer ;) Thanks Bob for all your great videos, I'll stay tuned!
Thanks for the video. But $225 + shipping for an EFHW ... yikes.
Can you run your antenna wire diagonally across your property? That would give you the longest length. I bought this antenna, it came in last week. I also bought the 49:1 UNUN from Chameleon in the weatherproof enclosure to be able to leave it outside. Haven't tried it yet, maybe this weekend.
The diagonal would give me some extra length, but I don't have any way to hang it from corner to corner. If I put something up here in the HOA...that would draw a bit too much attention. Good suggestion.
Nice content sir. Curious, you mentioned 3 wspr transmitters, do you disconnect these from their antennas or have some disconnect switch while you’re transmitting on your hf rig?
I don't run the WSPR at the same time as I'm running SSB or FT8 because they are using the same antenna. But I do use an antenna switch to take the signal from my IC7300 to my WSPR transmitters.
I have the older 40-10 CHA LEFS and it has been my POTA workhorse. If I can get the transformer into a tree, that's what I prefer to use. It's taken a beating and keeps on ticking. Great for winter activations as the excellent band agility means you can just sit in the car with no need to get out for antenna adjustments.
Thanks for the confirmation of what I am seeing....great antenna.
Try an elevated 80m 1/4 wave earth radial on your normal 40/10m EFHW I tune my parks 40/10 antenna on 80m with that set up. ft891 50w into a Z100 tuner. Seems to radiate pretty good to work any keen park chasers/hunters.
Sounds like a great suggestion. Thanks.
Great video.
Thanks for stopping by for a look Steve.
KI5GTR timestamp 13:18 Les, 73 Nate
"it's not a tuner" Arnold Schwarzenegger (probably... Somewhere...) /s
Sorry to be Spammy McSpammypants. Some day I'll learn not to comment 'til the end of the video and just get it all in one. I'm not positive, but I think the "trick" is that the wire is actually a little short. An EFHW for 40-and-shorter should be closer to 66ft, I thought. Exactly why that makes the difference, I'm not quite smart enough to know, yet.
Rules of thumb is 66' but you've to consider the construction of the 49:1 --> toroid diameter, type of wire and how even the wire is installed on the toroid.
@@Chameleon_Antenna Everything depends on everything! 🙂 I really appreciate that you guys engage here, by the way!
I like Blooper Bob!!! LOL 😂. I’m glad to see this antenna is getting you access to bands you normally don’t get.. 73, Bill KC2KNA
That guy may show up again from time to time. Thanks for the view and comment.
I know this experiment is specifically tunerless, but given that 80 was a mere 4:1, a radio with a built-in 3:1 like the FT-710 could probably make that work. It wouldn't be a GOOD 80m antenna at that point, but it would work.
Absolutely, a tuner could bring that 80 meter into a usable range.
Yes. I was surprised the SWR was 4:1 on 80 meters.
Yes indeed! In the case that you need 80M - any internal tuners will tune 80M with some reduce performances it you'll get on the air!
I was trying to figure out what you were holding and how the camera was following you! It was the tripod all along! The angle made everything but what was in your hand basically invisible. I thought for a moment it was a drone!
Its called a Insta360 camera, and it does crazy stuff. The selfie stick must disappears through the software I use to edit the video later.
@@HOAHamRadio Yeah, I guessed that might be the case -- there's actually just a little bit of distortion near you that seems to corroborate that idea.
Always great videos! Love it! 73
Thanks for the positive feedback @Krispin291, always appreciated.
@@HOAHamRadio … and placed my first order from your site!! 👍
I think most of us think about it the same way you do. 2 or less I take it as resonant and dont care if it technically fits the definition.
Sometimes I say stuff out loud that isn't technically correct, but its how we roll. Didn't think we were the only one.
And this is how it should be! The quest for a 1.1 SWR prevent MANY operators to actually enjoy the hobby! Very often, moving and installing in a straight line, avoiding self coil and overlapping can remove about 0.5 SWR on the final readings!
Another great video and the more raw presentation did not detract. A well planned and informative video.
Thanks for the feedback. I second guess myself when I do things like this, but sometimes its nice to just go simple.
Are you using an antenna relay? What is the clicking/contact closure when you transmit?
Very astute of you. I use an MFJ SDR relay switch to protect my SDRPlay receiver during transmission. The large waterfall display you see behind me when I am making voice contracts comes from SDR Uno software. It is the MFJ relay that you are hearing clicking in the background.
@ that’s awesome. I’m using a DX commander, but as you know, verticals receive everything incredibly well, especially noise. I’m going to use a long wire on the ground for receive and the DX commander as my transmit, but I need to get an antenna relay set up. 73
I have been running the CHA LEFS 8010 for a couple of years and it is phenomenal. Friends that run it report the same. de WN7D
I've heard this for years as well...now I know first hand!
Blooper Bob is like me. That portamast keeps me thinking. I tried out the KJ6ER new champion yesterday, looks good too. But then blooper Bob does this. Thanks again. KZ4OY. 73/44
Ah, so I created a dilemma for you : ) Nice to have so many options.
This Antenna gets good reports. I do not use one but am a fan of resonant antennas . The cost for this EFHW Antenna is a bit high but then again everything is these days. Best of luck getting it up permanent.... Thank You
If I'm successful with the perm set up, I'll be sure to share it with everyone.
@@HOAHamRadio Thank You !
Get out your box knife and lets see whats under that wrap.
: )
We've several pictures on our FB or telegram pages...
Hi Bob, I need 80 - 20 M bands for WA state EmComm from a small inter city lot (RFI high) or running portable. The best antenna for home and portable has been the CHA EmComm III Portable. I run mostly NVIS within a 40 to 300 mile, day and night, envelope and often work Asia to Europe depending on conditions on all open bands 160 - 6 M, with and without a tuner, all below 2:1 without except for 160 M which is still below 3:1. For $35 less, but 10 foot longer, you could be on 80 without that extra 130'. I would be interested, after seeing your numbers with a LEFS8010, how a well an EmComm III would be performing from your location as an inverted L(?). I don't know how to send you an image of today's swr sweep or I would. Thanks for all you do! 73 Herm, W7HRM
Hmmm. I'm gonna have to consider the EmComm III now....
My compliments to your drone pilot. Rock steady. 😉👍
A little secret, its me with my 360 cam : )
Good to know. I just fired my drone pilot. 😂
Great video. I am curious if you have looked at the matching unit to determine if it is in fact a 49:1. Could it be a 64:1, that would be interesting for conversation. Thanks so much.
In the last video I was curious about it and whoever runs Chameleon's YT said it was a 49:1
It's a 49:1. We tried with a 64:1 years ago without great success.
Where is the right channel audio ? Left ear sound only. Next time maybe check before you post.
I'm not an AV guy so this stuff gets past me sometimes.
I would love to see someone cut the wrap off and show what the magic is on this UNUN. Looking at another one they make they use 15 turns instead of 14.
I was definitely questioning that original claim, and I am intrigued. I had an LEFS for a while but I never saw SWRs like that. I wonder if the elevated feed point makes the difference.
Not sure about the elevated feed point, but I may find out in the next few weeks. I plan on trying to install this at my QTH permanently, and if I can pull it off, it will require the feed point to be low to ground. If I can pull it off, you'll see it here on the channel.
@ look forward to it. I bet the soil composition is in your favor too. Nothing but clay and shale up here.
@@BallJarSo Yep, I have an unfair advantage there for sure. Rarely do I have trouble getting good SWR with a vertical and a mediocre attempt at ground radials.
YES - Elevated feedpoint for 12M, 17M and 30M GREATLY help! I've PROTOTYPE #1 and #2 (without the heat shrink) installed here at the QTH in Phoenix since the last 3+ years and they went through several monsoons, extreme heat 110°+ for weeks, rain and everything else - they're still up and kicking!
Ok, rookie question, how does your camera do all that panning and zooming. It appears you aren’t running the camera remotely. Nick KJ5HSL
Looks like a 360 cam. You can pan tilt and zoom in post or even post in full 360 and then you can pan at home.
Yep, 360 camera; edit the video in post shoot and you can do all kinds of crazy stuff. It lets you be a 1 man production crew.
Great video Bob!!! The LEFS 8010 is my second-best antenna in the mass amounts of antennas I own. I sent you a Telegram question can you give it a look and give me your feedback, I value your opinion!!! Thank you, Bob. 73!!!
Now I'm thinking I want to find a way to install this permanently at my QTH. Would prefer the TDL but that gets some attention here in the HOA.
Thanks for all of the information. Just did my first radials for the Gable antenna I bought with your discount over Christmas. I used all of your parts and they worked as you stated. I am a relatively new HAM. Got my HF radio hooked up in late October..
Really glad to here this is successful for you. Welcome to the ham community!
OK, it's been a while. Any more thoughts on the VRURC battery bank now you've had more time with it ???? In my mind I can almost see it at 5 watts/qrp/cw with the FX-4CR but 20watts SSB I'm not so sure of. Your thoughts on that as always appreciated. I just paid Yu's invoice for the FX-4CR :)
Temporarily Offline has a few vids on the VRURC where is sees how long it will last with his IC-705. I proved out it would work, but never pushed it to its limits. That was the extent of my testing. I primarily use my Shargeek Storm 2 because it is so much more versatile, and has more power / capacity.
