HAMster Amateur Radio Group
United States
Приєднався 26 лют 2019
When the Group was founded in 2006, we originally were hightly active on HF and 2 meter Simplex operation. We grew as a 2 meter FM Simplex Group through out central Texas. In late 2009, much of the Group focus shifted to what is known as VHF/UHF Weak Signal. Not to be confused with QRP. This is SSB/CW/Digital/Meteor Scatter and EME. In 2011, this became the Groups primary focus. For the past 4 years, we have devoted ourselves to educating fellow HAMs on Weak Signal Activity, Station Building, Operating Techniques, Antenna design and more. We speak at local and regional clubs, we promote and host an Annual Lunch & Learn. What better way to grow the hobby, then to promote it and generate excitement for VHF/UHF Operating. HAMsters are about promotion of this exciting aspect of our hobby.

HAM Talk #18 - Entry level radios for VHF weak Signal & Amanda K1DDN of HAM Nation fame
Happy Thanksgiving to y'all.
Why or How did I get into Ham Radio? Ive been a prepper since y2k and I worked for Cellular One back in the day when we installed cell phones into vehicles. I worked for Motorola, and then for several radio stations locally as a disc jockey, Was an emt-i and firefighter and used radios back then too. Was a. Red Cross health and safety director. Always enjoyed radio stuff so ham radio was the next step.
we have a S.E.T. and I made it to see the show Sams gotta make it too LOL :) Georgia changed it up and separated it two weekends this time. We activated the Peach County EOC in the next county near mine. Im the District Emergency Coordinator. We had no idea what we were doing but had a good time doing it LOL :)
Lot of ham gear but no ham talk. This demonstrates nothing except your taste in music.
It's an amazing shack, and he has posted numerous videos of th shack in action. this was a simple video tour. KEEP IT UP GREG I LOVE THE SHACKS YOU HAVE BUILT
Great show ya. wow that rover is one mean machine! Greg, your station is stunning , looks great.
Thanks Dale
Fun episode with lots of action shots and tons of contacts. Fun to hear Bob K2DRH and Greg on 6. I have worked Bob on 6 sideband here on FM29. I am trying to activate a POTA park on 1296 this Saturday.
That would be pretty cool, a bit far for us to try and work you unless fantastic conditions. 23cm intrigues me for so much activity during contest, there is very little local activity. I am looking in the future to start a morning 1296 round table.....But that will be in a few more months down the road.
@@N5XOHAMsterWeakSignalGroup i live in a city with lots of +100 foot tall RF reflecting buildings that allow a 360 round table discussion without moving beams after finding the perfect beam heading. I activated the POTA park on 23 cm yesterday with 10 contacts: 8 cw, 1 ssb, 1 FT8.
love seeing how fast Greg works and sometimes gets tongue tied. He's way better than me. Maybe idea for a video sometime show what logging software everyone uses and how they log a contact. Ive yet to use any logging software as I don't do any contest.
lol amazing the number of antennas on Andreas rover LOL. Also amazing it doesn't burst into flames when she transmits with all the rf and wires in that thing LOL :)
What was the purpose of the verticle slot that you bored out? I have the same antenna and it is water logged as well.
Hi. This allows any rain water to drain out of the metal shaft. Without that slot bored out, the metal base will hold water and the antenna will eventually stop working.
Roger that makes sense. I have a Dremmel tool with a cutting bit I will do that on mine as well. Thanks for the prompt reply and 73's DE KQ1USA
It provided a route out for the water, between leakage and condensation those antennas are very prone to collecting water. I pulled one down off a tower some years back and after we pulled top cap and drained, we got over a 1/2 cup of water out of it. Keep the water out and they are affordable and high performing antennas.
I worked Bob on 6m SSB back in July 1999. I wish I had gotten a QSL card.
I met him about the same time, my first contact was June 1999, we had a nice long chat on 6 meters and found some common interest. Had numerous 6 meter chats in early 2000's and enjoyed face to face several times....But was an awesome guy, and I am sorry you did not get a QSL card from him. He and Bill W3XO were iconic mentors to me and I valued the time I got so spend with them both
I got ten dollars on Andrea taking greg LOL :)
I'll not bet against that :)
Hi yall, great video I will check it out a few times.
The best improvements I've made to my mobile setup over the years are--1. Bond all metal surfaces to one another to lower noise and 2. Drill a hole to mount an NMO connector on top of the roof of my truck. Magnet-mounts are convenient but don't work nearly as well. I do have a rover system with rotatable beams for weak signal as well. 73 DE WA5RR
I agree with you 100% - Which is what I covered regarding bonding the body and bed together and on the frame. I've seen a noticeable improving with such. I am not a fan of mag mounts at all, but some times a needed evil. The good news is it's not hard to bond them electrically to the car body at the radio location. The problem with drilling it's, just something I am hard pressed to drill a hole in a 70K plus car/truck and it's also out of the realm for many to do. Then you have cases like my and my wife's truck where we are 90% glass on our roof. Thanks for the comments.
Nice antenna design presentation. Ok. Sam wants Field Day rules changed, JD wants more evidence of humanity than digimodes provide, Greg wants other hams to use sideband more, Andrea wants hams to call CQ more/require less online assistance and a viewer comments that we should take sides on this divisive issue. So stop and smell a rose by any other name still smells as sweet. Call it what you want but radioactivity is fun.
We are q diverse group
Ummm.....N connector typically good to 11GHz, SMA up to 18GHz. N can carry more power, but for Meshtastic, the power is negligible.
Meshtastic is one of the few times I recommend staying with the attached antenna - the low power incoming and outgoing can be consumed by even a short length of feed line.. I agree with you on N's and in past episodes we have gone over connectors, impedance, insertion loss, etc.
the chocolate mint crawled away LOL
lol poor Andrea the motor lodge sounds like a bad place LOL
chainsaw massacre, hotel california, maybe psycho LOL
She has more adventures a month then most of us do in a life time :)
fcc wants to take away 900 MHz. be sure the lora wans you have don't use 900mhz. will this be an issue?
Yes we have been watching this closely. I have 2 900 MHz repeaters as well as the Meshtastic....so right now a little concerned about the potential to lose this......and as normal I have seen nothing from the ARRL on it......I hope they are on this and I am just missing the information.
im from the south we might mispronounce eff tea ate :)
yep I do what greg has with grounding surge protectors aka polyphasers and still unplug during lightning storms or when not in use like sam mentions
yep ga copper is good its upstate from me
OMG Sam!!!!!!! she's actually here. I can't believe it LOL :)
Havent seen anyone in the swapmate last Friday and Saturday talking about Meshtastic.. Also Medina country has more users in SA.
I did not either....but other than a little activity from the HAMsters I have not heard of any activity or planned....And to be honest I have no idea if anyone else or clubs are doing anything.
@@N5XOHAMsterWeakSignalGroup need more mesh nodes😁
you guys should record your hamster club meetings and post them online too. :)
We started doing recently posting the training portion of the meetings in the show...Not always but on topics we believe will be of interest to others. you have given me the idea of live streaming our club meetings and we may start doing that in the next month.
I know I look much better than I used to my hair is so much shinier and my skin much softer because of sharing these videos.
We are happy to help, by the way we learned in a very recent study performed just 5 seconds ago that those who share 500 times absorb the fountain of youth and live forever.
Good morning, I enjoyed the program. another great entertaining and educational episode. Meshtatstic seems to be a great EMCOM tool. In addition to coax loss, Connectors is another loss concern Greg clued me in on . I have had experience like Greg mentioned, Six open and no phone and cw happening but FT8 is active. I agree, digital should not be on the same playing field with phone and cw. looking forward to the next episode. 73
Enjoyed the segment about FM simplex. Learned a lot. The loss chart on the different types of coax was very informative. And I one Million percent agree with the notion that digital modes should have their own SEPARATE categories for contests-by themselves- and not be counted with other categories in any way, shape or form. IMO the digi modes have their place, just like HTs; but not in contesting unless it's a contest specifically for them alone. I don't know if anyone else noticed and I haven't done any specific research yet, but in the raw scores for June VHF, it seemed the overall number of entries was low. That could be a number of factors I guess: summertime/vacations, the ARRL-LoTW issues, etc. Great show though. Keep up the great work. I know there's a lot that goes into it. 73! Michael-WA5AZQ
Thanks for the feedback Michael We will be addressing most of your comments this coming July episode
Why do people dislike FT8 so much? What is the value to FT8 and what are the negatives? I have no working knowledge of FT8. Would like to learn more on it or more on why I should avoid it.
I might be off on this (disclaimer) but I’m going to give it a shot. FT8 was designed as a weak signal mode, created to be used to determine propagation conditions. To me, that’s the plus side. It’s surprising how far very weak signals can travel. An indication for potential communication using other modes (I.e. analog). The downside is, I believe there is an automatic mode allowing you to make connections while you’re away from your station. Some would call them QSO’s because, technically, two way communication between stations happened. People will go after WAS or DXCC using FT8 and it can happen in a reasonably short period of time. However… There are those of us who have committed to two way communication between two people, as the definition of a completed QSO. To me, automatic FT8 is like you buying a nice sports car (your radio) then hiring a driver (your computer). You wave goodbye to the driver as he takes your car out for the day while you make quiche. When the driver comes back with your car, you tell the world what a great driver you are. Not really the same as you acquiring the skills to be a great driver and maybe making mistakes you have to fix. Put another way, self driving cars might be a hit with the nerds among us but I’m pretty sure it will be a long, long…long time until we see self driving race cars more popular than human driven race cars. I’m not opposed to digital modes as long as there’s a human at the controls. I’ve been tempted to try QRP EME and meteor scatter. I live under a major east to west flight path for commercial and military aviation so airplane scatter is a possibility. Those would be great situations for digital modes. As someone trying really hard to get Mobile DXCC (currently 75/100), I’ll be d@mned if I give credibility to “FT8 DXCC”. ARRL’s website lists ~38 Hams with Mobile DXCC compared to ~370, for example, who have QRP DXCC…no easy feat! If FT8 interests you, go for it. …just, please, don’t tell me about “your” accomplishments. I know the difference. 73 de WB3CFN
I have never used FT8 before. It does not appear you all are fans of it? Why?
I will refrain from replying to this until the show - so stay tuned to next months show.
Ok I may be creating a fire storm with this question. Lol .. as most know I just got a new Tram1481 base antenna it is from ground 50 feet in the air .. now here it comes I have people telling me you got to ground it oh god you got to ground it ... OK my pipe iS 4 and a half feet underground in the ground.. no concrete but has support it isn't going anywhere that's for sure .. but have a guy telling I still have to ground it .. even the pipe is 4 and half feet underground to me that Should be enough ground.. am I wrong or do I need to get a 8-foot grounding rod and beat it in the ground and run wire ?
New to your channel - Love the energy and the content.
Thank you and welcome to the channel
people don't have to have Mike Fright im a friendly guy LOL :) when sam was talking about their cert team.
that chart greg shows of the different feed lines and how much power you get out of the 50 watt radio is a big deal. Amazing the amount of loss you have using smaller cheaper coax.
I consider feed line the most vital part of a station......It all starts with the feed-line and antenna
greg listing the stuff he has on the presentation he's giving. .......geeez Will you adopt me Greg LOL :). If Greg adopts me and Sam marries me were gonna be one Big dysfunctional ham family LOL
Sure, will petition the courts for the adoption tomorrow. :)
id like to learn more about the icom 9700. have jd do a talk on it. Im curious if I buy one do I need the gps clock card for it?
Unless your going to be doing narrow band digital modes on 23cm the radio standalone is fine. Honestly once the radio warms up if your only operating 23cm the fan never comes on because TX power on 23 is only 10 Watts. I have two 9700's and use both of them stock with the exception being I did add some ceramic wool over the reference oscillator RF shielding can for insulation. That alone stabilized the frequency considerably as the fan cycles on and off when in 2/70.
Only if you are doing some EME or such....I have had NO drift issues with either of mine mobil or the QTH
wait sam is divorced? marry me@@@!!!!!! LOL :)
yeah!!!!! another show was just outside picking blueberries and it started getting hot so came inside and low and behold y'all posted a video
SO HOW COME YOU ARE NOT SHARING THEM????
Just found your channel as I’ve been looking into getting into weak signal VHF. It’s good to see some young women enjoying the hobby as well. Thank you all for your time and effort to get some great content on the channel!
We drove 12 hours each way for 4:05 of totality, clear skies Indiana. Long distance 1296 record with 8 band Pluto+ SDR: 18.5 miles sideband contact with 78 milliwatts, 10 element yagi. Pluto+ was under $300, less than 1/10 cost of IC905. It fits in a cigar box.
Technically we drove 86 miles to see the eclipse, but as we were up at our ranch for the entire weekend. and the Monday eclipse....I guess we can't count that :). Unfortunately we were not able to view the eclipse at all, it was 100% cloud cover for the entire day.
M Lisa's setup is just fine and is more portable than most. As long as it gets you on the air and works who cares.
Scotts got what I want. WOW what a setup!!!
We are going to try and do a full video interview and tour or Scotts station in the near future.
I was lazy I just watched the eclipse on tv. I switched between channels to see what was covered..
