As a former ICU Charge (now retired) it makes me so angry when I hear stories about the treatment, in particular, of new grads, but also the sometimes callous behaviour of preceptors in particular. One of the first things I did when I took over my unit was to introduce a leadership team to mentor junior nurses. I'll take a step backwards here and explain that the unit was a mess with some absolutely toxic bullies. On my first day, I had a meeting with ALL off duty staff where I told them of my expectations around how we worked with our patients, and with each other. Everyone had to sign on to those expectations, and if they didn't want to they were gone. Three didn't, and left effective immediately. Within two weeks, another couple left. At the end of the shift they left, one of my juniors came up to me in tears, and said "Charge, thank you. If they hadn't gone today I was going to hand in my resignation, go home, and commit suicide. I'm glad she didn't. I've always believed that, as nurses, our first focus is our patients. We treat, or should treat them, with dignity, care, respect, and compassion. So why not do that with our colleagues as well? We instituted a program of juniors being paired with seniors for at least three months. Everyone was exposed to additional training with RT's, CRNA's, Equipment Techs, ECMO Perfusionists etc. Eventually the team grew, and the professionalism of all of the team, and standards grew with that. Everyone was set-up to succeed, and they did. End of this rather long tale, when I resigned, the young junior nurse who had come to me in tears stepped up to take over the unit. She, and the rest of the team are absolute rock stars in my eyes. Also, thank you both for highlighting the issues, and mistakes you've both been exposed to. To all new nurses, whether it be in ICU or any other area of nursing, remember this: "You don't know what you don't know until you find out you don't know it. Always ask questions, always question the answers. Embrace your mistakes, and learn from them. Tell others about the mistakes you've made, as well as owning up to them when you make them, because by sharing what we learn we grow, others grow, and patients get better treatment in the end.

If you wanted to get more granular, your loan calculations are average. You also have to consider that you are not borrowing the full $200,000 at once and you may be deferring payments for 3 years. If you break the $200,000 into 8 semesters that's $25k per term. Term 1 will compound interest for 36 months, term 2 will compound interest for 32 months, and each future term will compound a decreasing amount of interest by 4 months. Now that's considering you start paying right away. Considering overall compounding and deferred payments, your principal starts out at $221,948.84 with a payment of $2,584.19 and a total cost of loan of $84,554,51. So if every payment is made on time the total payback amount is $306,503.36. You could amortize each loan separately as well to see the individual interest payments. One other thing to mention are tax deductible 529 savings plan contributions. For 2024 you can deduct up to $18,000. Furthermore the distributions are tax free and grow with tuition increases.

Universal healthcare would be a disaster. You wouldn't be making the salaries you make now. Just look at the salaries Scandinavian and European countries that have universal healthcare. The quality of healthcare would suck because the government would have to ration the healthcare. I lived in Canada. I had to wait 6 months to see a specialist. Many people died waiting to see doctors there. Unless you've lived a country with Universal Healthcare, you don't have a clue what you're talking about.

I have 3.6 cumulative gpa, 3.88 for nursing pre-requisite class and 3.1 gpa overall in my just science classes in biomedical. I got A’s in all biology , anatomy, gross anatomy, chemistry all A’s except organic 2 I got a B+, bio chemistry B+, physics 1 and 2. B+. I don’t think I’m smart enough for graduate school so I’m not sure if I should go for it. What’s a good indicator if one can go through graduate school because I’m not confident in myself at all. Thanks in advance.

Also, I’m wondering if I am smart enough to go through graduate school. I don’t think nursing school is going to be as challenging as my biomedical degree, but who knows. I will find out in 2 months.

I got accepted to the accelerated program of nursing school and I’ll start in January. I’m really considering Crna school afterwards and it’s an interesting video on best ways of study tips. I did not know the method I’m using is actually science based so I’m glad that I found it by me failing and realizing something was wrong with my studying.

  • @billykhoury4038

What I found about on my last semester in my bachelor degree is that when you record the lecture and listen to it then write notes is the best way to study. I do spend more time doing so but I manage to understand the concept way better and makes it easier to recall. When I was taking biochemistry I struggled with doing well in the class because I relied on simply memorizing information which it did not do me well because the exams were based on understanding the concepts and implementing it in real life scenarios. I changed my studying habit with my professors suggestion and it changed everything for me. I was barely passing with a C on each exam to getting A’s in most cases. I was taking genetics, biochemistry and animal behavior in the same semester which I should have done but it was a good challenge.

Thank you so much for posting this video. I'm a first semester nursing student with the desire to become an ICU nurse and have gained so much insight and encouragement from this video, especially the parts about "ego death" and "stop worrying about yourself being good enough and perfect and worrying more about the care you provide". Thank you for this shift in focus. I needed that.
