Those that still live on the Venetian islands are mostly old-age pensioners. The Venetians that work in the centre (on the islands) take the train in and out every day. It would perhaps be different if the tourists were visitors who knew art and art history, but they have no idea what it is they're looking at. I doubt that many tourists would be able to give a rough date for Giotto, without looking in his/her guidebook; as for Cimabue, I doubt that many even know how it's pronounced. Why do they come here??? They come, and then they complain about the cost, the heat (no air-conditioning), the rats, the mosquitoes, the bad plumbing, the mould and the damp. Who can blame them?
