- Also in this episode: I dodge wolf attacks and brave crossing the Swiss Alps!
I'm following in the footsteps of the original tourists: the 18th century posh boys who participated in a travel tradition known as The Grand Tour.
WATCH PART ONE HERE: • The Original Gap Year ...
Stay tuned for part 3 where I visit Venice and learn about an 18th century Italian tradition that had Englishmen shaking in their boots...
This series was written and edited by me, Mary McGillivray. It was shot by Scott Burgess.
This trip was co-funded by the European Union.

These are so well put together and presented, great job Mary!
This is so professionally done- it could have been produced by Netflix or something. Great job!!!
Thank you!! I put a lot of effort into this series and I'm so excited for you all to see it!
I saw the Venice episode first. Thanks for making these!
this is such a wonderful series, looking forward to seeing more!
Great video! I have read a book called "Ladies of the Grand Tour" which documents the prejudice men showed towards women escaping the domesticity of their home to seek out adventures in Europe. It's interesting to read the impressions of british women traveling throughout France and Italy.
It's also very interesting to read Samuel Johnson and Hester Thrale's account of traveling through France. Johnson commented that France overall seemed much poorer than England, and that France didn't have a "middle class" as England did. In the french countryside, everyone lived in dilapidated houses of poor construction, much different than the English countryside. Frances Burney's travels in France is also very interesting to read as well :)
Stay tuned for a special episode on some women Grand Tourists!
This is so good! Can’t wait to see more 🎉

Thank you so much, I’m so happy to hear you found me via the algorithm!!
As an undergraduate in Geography, that's brilliant 👏 😀
How do you rate the 18th century maps I'm using? 😂
Excellent
So interesting to learn about something vaguely mention in several books
The Grand Tour has had such a huge impact on European history - it comes up everywhere!
I’m loving these soo much. 10/10 1:16 made me laugh so hard 😂
If you’re laughing you’re learning
🤌🏻
They weren't just "English men". Hundreds of young Scots made the "Grand Tour" and brought the enlightenment back to Scotland and the UK.
Why say "England" when you can be inclusive and say Britain or the UK?
A rich woman talking/complaining about how rich men of the past Complained about Tourism as she Tours Europe. Ok.
Cheer up. The real Alfred Deakin (that's him in your picture, isn't it?) would have been impressed with a woman who has an MPhil in History of Art and Architecture from the University of Cambridge, and is making that history accessible.
