loved this video! my personal favorite is when tourists complain about other tourists while at the same time completely dismissing the idea of choosing a more inconvenient means of travel or lesser known locations. Also complaining when something in Italy is "dirty" or not picture perfect - like, you do realize this country is just a normal country? People live here, too? It wasn't built for you to look at lol

I used to live in Roma and I never measured a column but I measured other things especially in Bologna, an insider joke that Italians know about bologna

I keep having to remind myself; since my first hitchhiking trip to Europe in 1968, the population of the world has nearly tripled, the numbers of tourists to Europe has more than tripled, while the number and size of the great attractions has remained unchanged.

An excellent, witty video, Mary! I was apprenticed to a painter in Florence in the late 1960s, and have lived and worked in Florence for the last 35 years. Tourists have definitely ruined Italy. The vast majority of residents don't live in the historic centres: the centres have been made into a Disneyland by the tourists. Florence has a population of around 350,000 people, while over 18,000,000 tourists come here every year and swarm through the streets, churches and museums. By and large, the Italians despise them, while depending on them for their income. Venice has a population of 120,000 people, but all but about 20,000 of them live on the mainland. Those that still live on the Venetian islands are mostly old-age pensioners. The Venetians that work in the centre (on the islands) take the train in and out every day.
It would perhaps be different if the tourists were visitors who knew art and art history, but they have no idea what it is they're looking at. I doubt that many tourists would be able to give a rough date for Giotto, without looking in his/her guidebook; as for Cimabue, I doubt that many even know how it's pronounced. Why do they come here???
They come, and then they complain about the cost, the heat (no air-conditioning), the rats, the mosquitoes, the bad plumbing, the mould and the damp. Who can blame them? We residents put up with it because it's where we live.

I live in New Hampshire, so I feel you Rome. We get too many friggin tourists too. We should feed them to the lions like the Emperors use to do!

That's not true, people do change but in some cases it would be more similar, and some cases the complete opposite.
