    I have a quick question If I had someone executive produce one of my songs, and he provided his input on adding harmonies, etc., and coached me on how to lay out the harmonies, and he also included a few harmonies himself with his voice. If I were to remove the harmonies, he did with his voice and release the song without his voice on it is he still entitled to songwriting royalties? We do not have any document or contract in place.

    • @theartistguides
      @theartistguides 29 днів тому

      Difficult for me to provide an exact answer, but generally if the other person is just singing harmonies then they wouldn't be given a songwriting (publishing income) share, unless maybe they fundamentally changed the song melody. Therefore, it makes no difference if you release the recording with or without their vocal. However, if you do release their recorded vocal then it is usual that they would be entitled to register as a performer on the recording with a Collection Society in your country that collects copyright income relating to recordings only (not song income). For example they could register with PPL in th UK, or in the US it would be with SoundExchange. This is how session musicians get royalties for recordings they have performed on if the recording is played publicly. How would the contract look with a producer and what would they be entitled to if I am the one that writes, compose and sings; also helps arrange song and always pay a one time fee for their work ? Learned a lot with this video thanks so much.

    • @theartistguides
      @theartistguides 29 днів тому

      Thanks for your kind comments about the video. In the scenario you have outlined, the contract would be quite straight-forward. The producer would not have any share of the songwriting (sometimes called the publishing income), but usually you would give the producer a share/percentage of the master recording income (i.e. the money that comes from distribution) in addition to the fee.

    If I paid to an audio engineer to record my song. I own the recording.

    • @theartistguides
      @theartistguides Місяць тому

      Yes that is usually what happens. However, you should always clarify this before beginning recording because there are occassions when artists, engineers and producers all have different expectations and ideas of what they believe is being agreed. A simple conversation at the start is much easier than a complicated disagreement later on.

  • @nomad1517
    @nomad1517 Місяць тому

    I also feel people limit themselves with the rockstar thing. There are so many avenues in the industry. Not saying quiting a solo career. But to pay the bills, I'm sure there are better ways to make a living in the industry.

    I feel people want to be remembered as somebody who made a difference. Or had major influence on others. Not so much the wealth. I'm sure wealth is a big part. But more of creating an experience that will be remembered and studied by others. I guess greatness has a lot of facets. So it's hard to quantify it.

With our teaching and coaching we encourage focusing on making great music and being a great artist. We want artists to give us their truth and their sound. How good can an artist become and how far can they take it? It's an adventure and a personal journey. Building an audience, marketing, promotion and all the business side is vitally important if you want to make any money, but everything starts with the artistry.

    i think a word that would appeal more to artists would be a “concept” rather than brand.

    • @theartistguides
      @theartistguides Місяць тому

      Thanks for your comment. I appreciate your thoughts on this. We've tried various ways to describe "branding" when teaching or coaching artists over the years, and you are right that "concept" is a good word as well. I often use it when teaching, although it usually requires further context and explanation. For most people "branding" is more generally recognised as the topic we are trying to explore. I agree, it is imperfect though and is off-putting for music creatives. With our strategy and methodology of artist develpoment we also have other topics such as artistic voice and sonic identity which we treat as separate ideas, so the word "concept" for us would be more of an overall description that can be used to help describe all of these things. We are very grateful for your thoughtful comment on this. We wish you all the best.
