5 JAZZ DRUM GROOVES THAT YOU MUST KNOW | free .pdf download!
The lows are just louder, but not much more difference. meh
Very good, man!
You do absolutely nothing with your left hand on the snare and toms until you can do that in your sleep. Lol. That’s what I’m working on now. Ooof.
Melodious tinkle ftw
Very helpful mate, thanks ..two questions please ..at what height do we have the snare in relation to our body .. and ... should it be set flat or at an angle ? I'm not playing with a kit, just snare and brushes only... best regards from Australia .. Charlie .
I’m just starting my jazz drumming journey. I absolutely love playing and your videos are helping me become better! Thank you for your help, your videos are easy to understand and cover a lot of ground.
Thank you for this video!
What is that thing on the snare drum closest to yourself?
This video was everything I needed for my young drum set players starting in jazz band. The PDF is stellar , too. Thank you for this incredible resource
Thanks for this video it’s good to see someone that actually gigs with their recommended gear Thanks for posting. By they way are those Roger’s or Ludwig Drums
Hi! how do you use your feet when playing jazz? I think for the hi-hat you keep your heel raised while for the kick you don't. Thank you for your videos!
Hi from Ireland Zac. I very rarely comment on the tube but just wanna say that I love your vids man, very informative and fun, (please don’t stop making them! ) Also outstanding playing man. Keep up the great work! ☘️
Which Istanbul ride is that? Sounds great.
I’ve never been a UA guy but I like their plugins. Nothing against the hardware either. However I don’t think using the modeling changes anything with the “current”, as it just uses the DSP to process the incoming signal before it hits the DAW. Am I wrong here? Any documentation on that claim?
The difference is actually pretty monumental to me. The Super 8 sounds so much fuller in the lows, has a more open and airy top end, and the whole kit just sits in space better.
Great video... useful insight as I transition back to a full time jazz setup after years of playing rock
The Istanbul cymbals sound so earthy and warm. A very well presented lesson.
I love the cymbals but I never understood the term, "earthy" when it applies to sound or food. "Dirty"?
I likebthe paiste professional 24" bag. Killer build and also the warwick rock bag, another beautiful bag!
For a beginner: do you recommend a snare drum for brushing or can be used any drum? Cheers Roger
This is gonna sound crazy. But I'm listening in a treated room and good monitoring (atc's), and there is a pretty big difference. Its hard to describe but the super 8 to me definitely has a "color" to it and its something that I was shocked that it was as big of a difference, there is a high end subtle push and forwardness to the super 8's that I love. Before this I wasn't sure if I wanted to get these preamps or just the built in pre's. Now I'll get a little cheaper interface (without built in preamps) and get these pre's! Thanks!!
I completely agree, I have this unit. it's more 3D and open, smoother top end, and more punch. definetly more of a dense signal.
I'm a newbie on drums, just started a couple months ago.
Excellent! Thank you sooo much Zac✌️🇦🇺
Really great video! An approachable introduction to such an important foundational element of drumming regardless of style
Great video! Been tempted to grab the copperphonic 6.5, I have a Supraphonic 6.5, wonder if you have any experience with that drum by comparison? Not sure if they would be too sonically similar.
I have the 6.5X14 Hammered Copperphonic with matching hoops and I also own a couple of supraphonics. I like the sound of both however the supraphonic is brighter and the copperphonic is darker I play all styles of music and I have degrees etc. I would definitely have this drum in my arsenal for Jazz /Fusion/Latin My Black Beauty was always my go to but ever since I purchased this drum last Christmas this is what sits on my snare stand you should also check out INDe Drumlab and their Oxidized Copper Drums. Josh the wonder used to design products for Ludwig so please check them out. That one is my favorite copper snare I currently own 4 of them
Wonderful Jazz instruction series you have; love your teaching style and straightforward, right-to-the-point exercises. Little hiccup for me was that my counting started to swing a little which started affecting hit timing! I have to be mindful to keep it militantly straight time. And it's pretty cool to be developing some independence and to be able to sense, manage and keep the straight time and swing time elements separated, sort of from outside yourself! Really, really helpful and spot-on instruction. Wish I lived in in-person lesson distance.
What size and model is your Istanbul Agop ride cymbal please?
Superb video 👏🏻
serious question, can we use brushes with match grip? because it is difficult to change the habit of playing Welcome to the Jungle with Match Grip for decades.
All this time I've been drumming Welcome to the Jungle. In my heart I'm actually into jazz.
I can see the RE20, but what are the other mics being used?
Thank you for the info ❤ you are great 👍🏼
Yesterday i overheard someone say something about the "mann im mond" german for "the man in the moon". Its the name of a german lullaby. (I dont know if it exists in egnglish too). Anyway, ever since then the lullaby ("la le lu nur der mann im mond schaut zu") got stuck in my head and thanks to this video i wanted to try and play a swung version of it on the drums. I sat down and figured it out in half an our or so. Ive only been drumming for 4 months. Your tutorials are absolutely amazing and super helpful. Thank you !!!
Great video, one notch above my current ability but it’s a good stretch. Great teaching!
Porthole …nah man Rest of hit sounds nice Lose the porthole
can you do punk rock???
Thanks! This was a helpful video. I appreciate the slow and progressive pace of your instructions
You should try comparing Agops and Istanbuls, if there's any difference.
did you not demonstrate the beat without swinging?
You tells us about Agop. But where's Mehmet in the story? They started together you problably know....
Love the ride, what’s the model and weight, sounds great!
Its The transients for. The apollo don’t quite catch the transients as well and makes it feel ‘less big’ and less (dare i say) open than the hardware.
Hi Zac! If practicing with a metronome at fast speed, do you keep the 2 & 4 or switch to 1 & 3?
just heard my dad and his friends jam out in the garage and got inspired… i’m no good at drums and this is so difficult but I really wanna try!! Thanks for making this vid
Keep up at it bro. One time I'll give you that I got from my dad is to play slow. To play something fast, you have to know how to play it slow. Playing slow also helps with clarity and making sure that you're playing the notes equally spaced. You practice with a metronome and slowly progress faster. That's one formula that every great drummer does
What really helped me was the understanding of the melody. I try to always play from something. Bob Moses taught me this.
Loving this jazz soloing content, been focussing on comping and wasn’t sure entirely what to do in a soloing/trading fours context. Are you releasing a more in depth jazz drums course?
Your "History of Istanbul Agop" is a total BS. Agop did not continue making cymbals alone. He and the other Cymbal Master of late Istanbul Zidjian faktory Mehmet started together the cymbal brand "Zilciler" then after a short period change their name to Istanbul Cymbals producing cymbals signed by both Agop and Mehmet. After Agop died in 1996 the Brand split as "Istanbul Agop" and "Istanbul Mehmet" between Agop's sons and Mehmet Tamdeger because both Mehmet and Agop had equal rights for the brand name.
U r welcome..now I must practice
10 thumbs down.
You have 10 THUMBS!? Thats incredible!!
Thanks 👍
I tend to overthink my tuning at times. Your video really helps lessen my thinking about it. Thanks for sharing!
