Great video Zach, thanks for sharing! In my experience getting students to really understand the incredible importance of playing good solid quarter notes can be a challenge (playing quarter notes on the ride on your own can get boring). Also, I big problem I see is that students are too concerned about learning how to play drums and not so much about playing MUSIC. So, great master drummer Carl Allen taught me this: play your ride and SING THE TUNES. The whole purpose of practicing is to make the ride feel good, and a big part of it comes from CONNECTING THE RIDE TO THE MUSIC. Plus, if you practice your drumming AND the music at the same time the results will be so much better and deeper! Thanks for you channel!

Thanks for the video. But , one question: what should I do with my left hand? I come from rock music and a beat that doesn't requires you hitting the snare as loud as possible feels very strange😅

I dig your videos. I have a 22" AGOP ride. thats all it says, but the writing and labelling is with green ink, not black. Do you know what that means or signifies? it sounds pretty similar

the vintage sounds like a "normie" cymbal. which is exactly what i want. no swishing, no annoying overtones, no infinite sustain. i've come across a 23 K sweet ride, and i feel like it's in the same ballpark. the agop traditional jazz is a great crash cymbal. not a ride, despite its marketing..

That vintage ride sounds amazing! The Istanbul one doesn't sound bad at all - but the vintage ride just has that buttery smooth quality to it.

I like the 20 inch Istanbul agop I got a 20 inch 30th anniversary and is crushable. I also got 3 - 25 in cymbals that are all crushable. Agop 30th, Agop signature, and a Royal Cymbal Craftsman made by Paul Francis. He calls it The BEAST.

Hello Zac. I'm not a drummer but I heard a really nice big band arrangement of Woody Shaw's 'Sweet Love of mine' on UA-cam which credited Zac Covington as the arranger. ua-cam.com/video/HdMFMqpI4H0/v-deo.html I was wondering if this arrangement is for sale anywhere and if so where? Alternatively would it be OK to transcribe for my own band.😊

Thanks for the upload and detailed info. 😀I have been thinking about one of these bags but it concerns me that you've basically had two of them and both times ( if I'm not mistaken?!) the base has split in the same place? It sounds like you carry a lot more cymbals though- I would only be carrying hats, a 20/22" ride and a 18" crash plus sticks so maybe it would hold out longer. My question is- is this a weakness overall in the bag or just purely because you were carrying more stuff inside it? I would be buying from a UK distributer so if I encounter the same problem, would Mono help me out? I am assuming they are based in the US.

I've been playing for over half a century. I've never stopped using a metronome. It's like the conductor of an orchestra. It relieves the player of some of the concentration necessary to stay in time. If your rhythm starts to wander withOUT a metronome, you have no reference to help you "get back" into the meter. But turn the click on, you've got the perfect drummer that never varies in time.

I have cymbals from the present day, from the 80's and the 60's. My personal taste does not rule out any cymbal that is in good shape and sounds good, regardless of history. However, you compared a bright Zildjian Avedis (now known as A-Series) ride to a dark Istanbul Agop Traditional Jazz ride (one of my favorites). This is kind of like, "apples to oranges". I would have preferred to see and hear a comparison between a dark Zildjian K 20" ride made in Turkey vs. a dark American (EAK) 20" ride. This is probably not economically feasible, but it would be nice. This isn't a complaint, just a request. Thanks! Again, a wonderful video.
