The Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 came back to St. Louis on September 11, 2024 on its tour of the Midwest. I was able to get some footage both leaving the 12th Street Yard in downtown St. Louis and it passing through Carondelet Park in South St. Louis. I also had my GoPro out and got some shots of it blasting me and my car with steam as it was backing out of the yard, and trackside as it passed by...

On May 4, 2024 three friends and I took on the Hincapie Gran Fondo in Chattanooga, Tennessee. We did the 80 mile route which had some pretty epic climbs in it. Total elevation gain was over 5,600 ft and featured two of the hardest climbs I'd ever done! It was a really well-run event and I feel good about accomplishing it. Registration came with a nice jersey and a Road ID band, and lots of othe...

Katy 2023 Bike MS Fundraiser

On August 19, 2023 I set out to see how far I could go on the Katy Trail on a Specialized Turbo Vado 4.0 with a range extender. I was able to go 141 miles between 4 am and 8:30 pm, at which time I broke my range extender cable and decided that it was time to throw in the towel. I did this as a bike-a-thon format where I asked friends and family to pledge per mile for how far I could go in one d...

Bikepacking the Katy Trail 2022 Part 1
Hello! thank you so much for this! It looks like the link is broken. Any chance I could get that spreadsheet?
Hmm, it appears to work for me but I'd be happy to send you a copy. Please email me at the gmail address for user dherholz.
Awesome video! Is there some sort of license you need to fly a drone over the yard or are you just allowed to?
Fantastic job gentlemen!!
What a great trip! Thanks for including me and documenting it.
David, thinking of going there next week after Gravel Revival this weekend. Did they welcome multi-day parking at Coler?
We had reservations at the campground which came with gated parking. When we did the high country route I believe we just stayed in the campground parking lot. I'm not sure if we needed to get permission to do that--it's been so long I can't remember. They were very friendly though, I think if you just reach out to them and ask, they'll help answer those questions. On the other side of the bike preserve I remember there was a lot that was not gated, that I think anyone could use...probably overnight too, but I would check.
Nice rig! Except the speakers.
So where is it headed now
It's taking the long way home to Cheyenne via Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Arriving back home in Wyoming in late October: www.up.com/heritage/steam/schedule/index.htm?os=io.&ref=app
Is electricity available at most trailheads?
No, not at most, only a couple that I found. Most have no electricity/lighting at all and a few don't even have plumbing (compost toilets). Bike charging can be a bit difficult on the Katy in my experience. I did a video on an ebike trip on the Katy and showed a few options I had found.
What speed did you average? And what assist mode did you stay at ?
My moving average MPH was 13.1. I tried to stay in level 1 as long as I could, but I would go into level 2 as I got longer into the ride and was feeling like my legs were fading. Once I knew I was done, I put it in level 3 to make it to the town where I my wife was going to pick me up. www.strava.com/activities/9727610470
Oasis of amazement!
Trademark is pending. Don't go putting that on T-shirts and coffee mugs now without the express written consent of major league baseball.
Didn't see Ben at the end. Were you able to stick together?
No, he ain't got time to wait around for my slow ass. I think he's Benjamin Buttoning and getting stronger every year...
Well done 👍👍
Thank you 👍
Was doping allowed?
EPO smoothies for all registered riders!!!
Just ordered a Creo 2 and it would be cool to add a column to your spreadsheet for public plug ins
Congrats on your ebike! Your idea is a good one, however I don't know there would be too many trailheads that I could mark as having a "public" plug in. Most of the trailheads that had a bathroom facility had no power at all. A few had exterior outlets that had a locked cover on it (Pilot Knob comes to mind), and one I remember had an outlet only inside the bathroom itself, meaning you'd have to park your bike in the bathroom the whole time! I charged in Hartsburg in a little park just off the trail (the gazebo had an outlet) and the Meriweather Cafe in Rocheport, which is awesome, were very friendly when I asked if I could charge there. Mokane had an outlet in the pavilion by the ball fields. Bottom line is charging isn't as easy to come by as you might hope. Most of the trail is fairly remote and most places just don't have exterior outlets free for the using.
Thank you so much for this great tool and the advice!
Absolutely. Let me know if you have any Katy questions.

if minimizing overnight sleep is it reasonable to complete in 2.5 days?
Hello! Yes, depending on your physical abilities of course, it is possible to do it in 2.5 days. If you actually go end to end (Clinton to Machens) it's 237 miles, so like two 100 mile days and one 40 mile day. That would be a big effort. 100 miles on the Katy is quite a bit harder than 100 miles on a road bike because of the slow crushed limestone surface. If you start at Sedalia (where the western most Amtrak station is) instead of Clinton you'll save 35 miles off those totals. And if you end at St. Charles, you'd save another 12 miles over going all the way to Machens (it's pretty desolate between St. Charles and Machens). So it kind of depends on how you define "complete" the trail, but even if that means end to end 237 miles, it's possible, but again...it's gonna be tough! Definitely don't try to do it in the middle of hot summer!
To prove it's possible, here is a video where I biked from Sedalia to St. Louis (past Machens) so about 220 miles over 2 days. But again, it was hard! ua-cam.com/video/4GB3hCn1Ilw/v-deo.html
Thanks for sharing your trip David I’m sure those memories will stay with you. It looked like you guys were spending a lot of time making water, but hey, it’s the Grand Canyon, what else is there to do except enjoy the experience and make water! Take care!
Yeah, the water filtering time was honestly some of the highlights for me. Sitting around relaxing and talking, but also working as a team to make sure we all had what we needed to survive the next day! It was a great way to bond with the friends. Thanks for watching!
I plan on doing a similar Bike MS fundraiser this summer and was wondering how you collected donations. Did they simply pledge verbally and then donate to your ride on the Bike MS website? Thanks
Yup, that's exactly what I did. No one reneged on their pledge and several rounded up, so it worked out pretty well. I had great results with this, much better than just asking lots of folks for a donation, which is what I had tried with little success for many years of doing charity rides/runs. Good luck with your fund raising!
Great tool, I've done the katy several times. However, always looking for more in depth planning processes... I not been able to download and an excuteable copy of it to my computer. Obviously my computer skills are lacking, help....
I'm happy to email it to you as a traditional attachment. Send me an email at dherholz at gmail dot com
What type of bike did you use? Are the trails routes too extreme for a gravel bike? I have a trek dual sport 3 and was wondering if good tires on it would be efficient for the race?
Howdy! So the Berryman FAQ says "Any non-motorized, non-electric bicycle is legal for the race. We encourage MTB's. The 20hr and 8hr courses will include some technical roads or trails that will be difficult for most riders to traverse on a hybrid, gravel, or road bike. " I would agree with that. I *could* have done the biking the year I did it with a gravel/CX bike but there would have been times it would have been a bit uncomfortable for me if I didn't have a fat tire and front suspension. The more technical parts were short though, so you could probably just hike-a-bike for those stretches and not suffer too much on time. So I'd agree: MTB is your best choice, but a gravel bike could get you through, (provided it wasn't overly muddy and assuming the bike trails are pretty similar year to year).
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Congratulations!!! Thinking about doing this!
thanks for the video guys. it is very helpful to see the details of the terrain.

Just curious is you happened to remember on which date cable was up on 2023. Was June 22 the first day of the season?
According to the chats I had with my hiking group, the cables went up on or around 6/14/23. That was late in the season due to the large amounts of snow California received early 2023. As you may have read, normally they try to get the cables up the Friday before Memorial Day.
@@dherholz I appreciate you looking it up! It's not that late considering the amount of snowpack. Applying for open lottery this week!
@@junhoryutube good luck!
Thanks for this. I'm headed there in two weeks on the Breakaway. I'm going to do the Deluxe version of this (12 people)) after watching this. Was there a malaria warning? Did you put on insect repellant?
As I recall insect repellent was recommended but we've been there 5 times now without repellent in the Dec - Feb time and have never had a bug bite. No malaria warning that I can recall. Enjoy your cruise!
Thanks. We had no issues in Belize a couple years ago either. @dherholz
My husband has slight mobility issues. He doesn’t use any devices to get around. How rough is the terrain. I think he would only have problems on rocky areas. He really wants to see Ruins
@@tammylockington4855 I don't think it would be a problem for him.
Great video. Thanks for sharing the spreadsheet. We will certainly use it for our planning. Any suggestions on what time of year is best for the trip? I’m leaning toward a fall trip, thorns be damned… But spring could also be appealing.
Yeah, I'd say April, May, September, or October are your best bets. Summer is quite humid in Missouri and can be pretty miserable. Also be aware Missouri State Parks turns off the water in winter so be aware of that. I've done the Katy end to end probably a dozen times and had a flat one time but it was a double flat situation due to thorns. Run tubeless and/or bring two or more tubes would be my advice. Be prepared but your odds of making it without flats are pretty decent no matter the time of year.
I've always wanted to visit Nashville. Now that you've spoiled it with these lovely shots, I guess I don't have too. Thanks Dave!
Well, normally I'd say my amazing drone shots mean you don't have to visit the city, but Music City really lives up to it's name and the drone can't quite capture the energy and sounds of like 20+ bands playing in a few blocks on a Monday night. It's amazing and you need to visit it in person. Thanks for watching though!
Okay, I'm back in. Thanks Dave!
Does this excursion start and end at the same spot?
Yes. This excursion, and I believe all ship excursions, leave and arrive back at the pier.
I find it easier for me to adjust to the dark than wear a lamp but, hey, I wasn’t there!
Interesting thought. You're probably right, your eyes would adjust and you'd be better able to take in your entire surroundings and not just the area right in front of your headlamp. Still, it's probably a little safer with the headlamp because the trail is at times narrow and not always super obvious even in daylight.
Thanks for all taking a turn with the camera. I’m getting a good idea of what it will be like! What date did you start? I’m planning April 2024. Geez great flow on the filter.
We started down on the Tanner trail on 9/22/22 and came up on the Grandview trail on 9/25. If the Colorado is going to be muddy, I'd recommend having multiple filters, and multiple squeeze bags (if using a Sawyer Squeeze). We found that by letting the river water sit in a bag for 30-45 min to let the mud settle, then carefully pouring the top water into another squeeze bag and filtering that, it would go much better.
Nice work! I did this a few weeks ago. It’s weird how photos don’t do this justice, it’s quite a thing in person. Scale is immense.
Yeah, I think the best shots I got were the ones where I pan the chest mounted gopro to the side of the cables and you can see that steep angle. Pictures you just can't quite appreciate how steep that is.
Great job Dave! Nice work raising all that Milan for MS. Sounds like quite an adventure.

You're very welcome!
Congrats on finishing it, and thanks for sharing! I did it 3 times: 2013, 2014, 2015. In 2015, did it with my son who was 14 at the time...fun watching it with my son, brought back great memories, thanks again! Just moved back to CO August 2022. Signed up for the Copper Triangle 2023, hope I have the legs and lungs! lol! Take care!
That's great, thanks for watching and congrats on doing it 3 years in a row! I kind of feel like that one is a one and done for me, but who knows. It was a great experience. I thought I was going to do Copper Triangle this year, but looks like that will have to wait until next year maybe. Good luck with that!
@@dherholz Thank you sir! Be well!
I love my team, but why’d they make the stadium look like a hollowed out courthouse?
Brilliant.
Thanks!
Great video and well narrated. You did great job showing the different scenes and descents. Must take a lot of practice to hold the camera and/or fly the drone while riding. Just curious how you trained for the high altitude, breathing, etc........Congratulations on your accomplishment again.
Thanks for watching! Holding a GoPro while biking isn't too hard. The image stabilization is so good, the video almost always comes out great. The audio...well, sometimes not so much if winds are high. Flying a drone while biking is a challenge! I just try to get it lined up in a parallel direction to me, and then with one hand on the handlebars and one hand on the forward/backward stick, push ever so slightly forward, keep it in that exact stick position, and hope somewhere in the middle of the shot is something usable--me & my group riding through the shot.. As far as high altitude goes, I don't think there is much one can do to prepare for that, other than just being in the best biking shape you can. I find high altitude to be a factor only if you push yourself to go too fast. Once you start breathing fast, you have to recognize that and slow down because if you don't, you'll have to stop for a bit to catch your breath. The good news is I find that after I stop like 30-60 sec, my breathing is normal again, and I can continue. Basically you just have to not let yourself get too aerobic. We did go out 2 days early and did a few training rides, but I don't think that's nearly enough time to truly acclimate, I've read that it takes like a month to really get used to the high altitude. Slow and steady is the name of the game!
Very cool. Thank you!! I have a suggestion for improvement. Maybe have a separate start time for each day. I know I try to time my arrival at my hotel around check-in. On days that I might only ride 40 miles (which would be 3.5 - 4 hours), that could have me arriving before noon if I start at 7:30. If I start at 10:00, take breaks and lunch then I would be arriving around 3:30-4:00.
Thanks for the suggestion. Perhaps I didn't point it out, but you actually can override the default day start time just by typing the time you wish to start in the cell. Each individual row calculates the ETA time based on the ETD time from the cell above, based on the miles of distance between the above row and your average predicted MPH. But you can always just type in a date/time in the ETA cell, and everything below will calculate based on that, up until you type "Overnight" in the break cell, then it resets the date/time of the following row according to the next date and the default start time from the top (which again you can override). Let me know if you need more help figuring that out, I'd be happy to help.
