Note: This video was re-uploaded to resolve issues with the audio levels on the original. This is an honest review of the Dygma Defy based on several weeks of use. It has a solid build with the best sound and feel, with some of the best hardware out of the split keyboards I've reviewed (at the time of publishing). The RGB underglow is amazing. The built-in tenting is the best I've tried. But, o...

The Best Type of Keyboard for Programmers (feat. Moonlander Mark I)
One tip regarding the SM7B: It should be positioned as close to your face as possible. It is not intended to be used at that distance. If you are worried about the mic blocking your face, you can use a directional mic like a shotgun mic
Loved your intro. :-)
They said the same thing for mechanical keyboards and suddenly good mechanical keyboards got around $100. Some things don’t add up.
@15:48 I totally agree, and if you want the tent, I recommend you buy a pair of door stoppers, and use them as the support for the tent while keeping the cluster flat.
Thank you!
trackball is the way for mouse, after 2 weeks you 360 better on it then a normal mouse. it take a little time to switch but you will be happy you did
How about a new layout like Dvorak or NEO 2?
how do you make a bracket or curly bracket?
I've had the moonlander for 3 years and it's really phenomenal but the voyager looks like it fixes all my minor issues with moonlander. I initially thought the tenting being limited to one option is bad but realized that without the palm support it be just the right height and angle. It's hard to justify spending almost $400 to get it when have the moonlander but I'm really considering it
Man wish i could afford his.
If you haven't already looked into tenting, there is a tenting kit for the Moonlander that makes it way more comfortable to type on - it's called the Platform. Tenting addresses the pronation issue that causes a lot of RSI. I'm guessing there should either be a version of the Platform that works with the Voyager, or a way to get the magnetic mounting of the Voyager to work with the Platform. It's expensive (ZSA stuff is expensive, but it's worth every penny), it's heavy (I realize this defeats a lot of the purpose of the Voyager) - but tenting is a total game changer. If you don't go with the Platform, look into tenting with 3d printed tented stands, a beanbag solution like Ben Vallack shows, or even just stacking stuff on the desk to put the edge of the keyboard on. Tenting is the reason behind keyboards like the Dactyl and its offshoots. For me, I started looking at alternative keyboard layouts and keyboard options when I got some RSI issues in college. I switched to the Dvorak layout & started using a split (ish) keyboard with a domed, somewhat tented layout for the keys (the one I used in college was the PS2 version of the Microsoft Ergonomic - and recently before getting the Moonlander, I used the newer Microsoft Ergonomic 2019 version. I now type with a mirrored version of the ISRT layout that Ben Vallack has mentioned, on the Moonlander with the Platform (tented probably somewhere around 40 degrees). I mirrored the ISRT layout because - coming from Dvorak, the vowels feel to me like they belong on the left hand, for a right hander that mouses with the right hand. I also put my number pad on a layer on my left hand, for the same reason. I really feel like a lot of what most people feel as RSI from computer use is actually due to the pronation issue of traditional *flat keyboards. My guess is: you can really type all day, likely on just about any keyboard layout on any kind of keyboard - if tenting is incorporated. The pronated, flat position of "normal" keyboards squishes your tendons in between the bones of your forearm - which are criss-crossed when pronated, giving your tendons less space to move. The problem isn't using your tendons, it's the pronated position - and is exacerbated with crappy keyboard layouts that cause your fingers to have to work harder than they really need to. This is just my experience, and my speculation on root causes. I also use a trackball (the Ploopy Adept), and I have it tented somewhere around 30 degrees - they also make "ergonomic" mice that are tented, but I really think using fingers for a trackball (not your thumb, don't make that mistake) to move the cursor is more ergonomic than moving your elbow & shoulder like with a mouse. I do think the deeper you go into layers and optimizing / minimizing finger travel, the fewer keys you really need - and I think somewhere around 36 keys is plenty for anyone willing to really dig into the power of layers and the 'tap dance' features of ZSA programming (and QMK, where it comes from). For anyone who hasn't dug into tenting, check out Dygma's vide on tenting: ua-cam.com/video/pUKoB95aEc4/v-deo.html Godspeed.
I've been dreaming of a Glove 80, and then I saw the Cherry Blossom switches!! Literally everything I want in a keyboard! I'm gonna get one someday!
Bold of you to assume that my time is important
What is this keycaps at the end?
I'm one of the pre-orders for the Raise 2 and it's been great. I only wish it was a 65% or 75% compact instead of a 60%, I really miss the arrow keys on my Keychron K3 Pro.
What is the return or enter key?
Coming back to watch this after getting my Raise 2. Tenting is superb. Best solution on the market IMHO. Bazecore has been fine for me for wired updates to the config. I don't use a superkeys or home row mods though.
yo the logitech mx vertical is the BEST mouse and I game on it no problem!
From ergonomic point of view, don't use a keyboard with wrist rest!
so bad the layout is read only
It took me a while, but after rewatching this masterpiece a few times, I finally noticed the "over 9000" meme on your screen at the beginning of the video-haha. Great one!
Coder girlie here with almond shaped short to long nails. How does it work with nails? I use a logitech ergonomic keyboard and am looking at the dygma defy/raise or something like it to learn how to game. i can't use a flat keyboard. Just cannot do it.
I went from learning to touch type to going down a deep rabbit hole on your videos. I don't know how it happened but I like it
I saw someone mention that on TikTok and I can't stop thinking about it whenever someone brings up the price of anything: "the prices of necessities and luxuries flipped" it used to be that your TV was $500 but your rent $50 and you could pay for college by working at the fast food joint. Now median rent is $2000 but people still can only save money by reducing luxuries even though it's nothing compared to necessities.
Holy shit this was useless.
I want 150 keys.
wtf is that. we need 30 dollar split keyboard from temu
Great review as always! Looking at the defy and glove 80 currently. Using the 360 as of now.
Informative as always! Keep up the videos bud.
Ich hätte die gerne noch länger beim Tippen zugesehen. Sehr gute Videos.😊
Ohh it's for handicapped people
20:24 What if she watches this video?
Came to cheer you up a bit. I bought voyager year ago because of your awesome review on it. Helped me to decide. So just to confirm - your content is the one the helps others to make those decisions on which keyboard to buy before prior try. Thank you!
IMO if you wanna go for an ergonomic design you can't beat Kinesis, that's really why you buy a Kinesis that's the entire focus of their company and what they pour all their R&D into, otherwise they're crap keyboards with cheap switches and keycaps, what you're really paying for is the ergonomic R&D from Kinesis and on that arena they reign supreme
As someone who has DeQuervan's the thumb cluster is a nightmare for me to use. Also 4 of the rubber padding on the bottom of the feet have already detached just after 4 months of use. Overall I don't think this is the keyboard for me. I have a Voyager on the way and I hope its small size and closer thumb keys help me alleviate some of the RSI issues which the Glove80 couldn't help with.
Thank you for this video. That you talk about the key configuration software was great. I'm actually now rethinking the voyager.
Hey, I've had a look at your Voyager keyboard layout on Oryx and noticed that you dedicated you F and J keys to home row mod for shift. If you want shift on the thumb cluster you could add a hold action on where you have your return key, because how often do you need to hold return? This is what I have done anyway.
Hey Big dog thanks for the review. Can you suggest a number keypad to add to this configuration because I like to have it for other work I do. Thanks.
Have you tried Azeron Cybog keypad and CharaChorde
You can get the zip set for your moonlander. I mean the flatter keys.
Are these, like the glove 80 or Voyager or Kinesis, good for dealing with tendinitis? I’ve really been developing more pain in my tendons which is likely due to my desk being higher and arching my wrist. I feel like split keyboards are the only ones for me that will keep my tendon flares in my hands with their ergonomics. Any thoughts?
13:10 I have seen some controller software that lets you set up profiles. IE Launching a game? Swap to the appropriate game style profile. Is this an option & if not should it be?
Thanks for the great video. I've been looking for a better keyboard for many years, but I was trying to find not only split programmable keyboard but also wireless. And finally I found and use for over a year now which is Dygma Defy I love it so much that I am currently waiting for Dygma Raise 2 which has different layout than Dygma Defy and is open for extensions (which currently don't exist). Both have great integrated tenting and I love first one (second one not arrived yet). The Moonlander and other split keyboards didn't conviene me due to being only wired solution and their tenting kits if exist are a lot bigger. I was also wondering about Glove80 but seems that build quality is not there yet. How do you like its build quality? Maybe you will compare Dygma keyboards with this ones in the future.
Why oh why are you going to the net and calling yourself Dygma :D Jokes will write themselves :D
I still dont know to get a glove80 or defy. If ergonomics is my first priority, so I should choose glove80 without doubt?
Ferris Sweep is super cheap and don't need diodes so no need to solder small surface mount parts. I also modified mine to work with Vial which in my oppinion is one of the most powerful qmk configurators out there.
I prefer the regular Kinesis Advantage 360 over the glove 80. I prefer the fact that it has different sized keys on the thumb cluster. Also the tenting on the Kinesis feels better imo.
I watched a ton of videos and did a lot of research to find the perfect keyboard for me. Your videos helped me choose the glove80 and I literally can't imagine life without it now. I'm a full time software engineer and this has been one of the best purchases of my career! Thanks so much for the great videos and recommendation. Can't sing my praises of the keyboard enough
I always had a feeling that heavier switches made it difficult for me to type all day...thanks for confirming my doubt.
The quirk you encountered where you have to be focusing on another app, or terminal capturing your keypresses - Karabiner-Elements can probably overcome it. It's scarier to configure, as it requires a JSON config file and you'd use terminal commands to launch apps - it's not as friendly for non-coders. Not sure if Raycast would be able to circumvent the terminal issue either, but it's probably a much easier to configure than native MacOS method.
