As a drummer- When I lived in LA, the only biz worse than Music was acting. I can't imagine, if you are not union, it makes for really hard times. So once I moved from Branson to the Tampa area. Gigs were hard to find. 2010-2012), There are millions of musicians in FL. Snowbirds that move there, blow the dust off their instruments and put a band together. They won't pay anything I found the best gigs to look for- Corporate Jazz/lounge gigs. Clone band acts like, Elton John, VH, Metallica, etc, etc. They pay as good or better. There are a few big booking agents that cover Tampa/Orlando and then South FL. Constantly watching Craigslist ads will give you an Idea where the best action is. The Villages and on up to the Flagler area are best for gigs that play bike rally's and private parties. I'm in the Chattanooga area now but if I were to move back to FL, it would be So FL. Lauderdale and Miami or up in JAX., just my opinion. But there should be plenty of work between Tampa and Orlando for you.

The compitition is stiff in Nashville..the money..I went and it was after our producer told my singer “We have plenty of great guitarists out here, but if you need him he better not let me down”!! Well I went and I felt more than confident about my skill factor..then the day before our session we went downtown to Music Row and hit a few bars.. it was the same in everyone..band playing for tips for session time..I never witnessed that before..let alone how good they were..it made me rethink my talent..I talked to a guitar player on a break and he said it was hard to make it anywhere above what they were making in tips, until your discovered..or go back home..needless to say I put on my blinders after that did my session and waited for what the feedback was going to be from our producer. I was elated to say the least when he said my singer did the right thing in bringing me along because I had my own distinct playing style..that’s my Oregon originality style!! Glad you settled in BadBrad!! My daughter moved to the Orlando area last year!!

I got an unexpected BMI royalty check. Turn out a cable TV channel, somewhere played a show called The Psychic Friends Network Picnic. Said show used a snippet of onebof my songs. Strange and they never asked me.😊

I just played a jazz gig in St. Paul in June. Played 3 sets and talked to people for a little while then the bartender walks up and hands me $300.00 in cash. I thought wow I didnt even have to ask anyone to get paid. How nice! Definitely have had it go the other way though. I have some stories myself. Really like your style of presenting a video. It's very down to earth and real. No BS. Good luck in Florida!

I studied commercial music in college. In my orientation, a professor laid it out. “If you’re going to make a living playing music, you’re rarely going to love what you’re playing”! And when you don’t get paid for a gig you don’t really get into, just salt in the wound!😫 I love this guy🎸

I played in a cover band back in the 80’s we played an out door job at the end our bass player went to get payed. A bunch of guys started surrounding our van band with the gun racks in the back windows of their trucks. So we got out with out getting paid because that was a party down by the river 😜. So lesson learned always get at least half the money up front.😎

Hello Brad! I hear you, 'collecting' is probably one of the worse parts in making Music, because we musicians are poets and collecting has nothing to do with playing music, but you have to learn how to do it. Usually, the ones who have the bigger budgets are the ones you 'll have to chase in order to have your check. Normally, 'poor' people know the importance of money and surviving, so they kind of try their best in order to pay you, and also, are the most generous.Nowadays, if you ask 'what's your budget, for the work you need me to do?', watch them run like ants!
Thank you for sharing your stories, lots of musicians can relate! Take care!

I read where Tony Iommi said "if you go into music.....learn one chord. Then learn a second chord. Before you learn a third chord.....get a lawyer".
Seems to me that the only way to make real money in music is in publishing. Everyone else has their hands out taking their cut, stealing, scamming, etc. The biz seems to attract some of the very worst in management and promoting, using naive youngsters who love to play.
I think of all the big names that have been bankrupted and stolen by tens of millions of dollars....Billy Joel, Ted Nugent, damn near all of Motown. Too many to list.
    It's a jungle out there.

We'll see how far and hard I will need to get for this one, but I won't play the next gig on the 21st unless I get money from the 3rd. Or at least an email explanation.

I’m new here Brad? Appreciate your hard work and all of the great intel you provide to all of us! I grew up in Nashville, left in ‘78 with a family move. As you’ve said, Nashville is a different animal today? Back in the day, MEL Tillis took his tent to Branson and story goes “I’ll leave a light on for ya” to his fellow music stars? He was “the Kreskin of the time” and what followed was the flood gates of old school “Real Country” acts fleeing the sinking ship? Now when I hear a player say “hey I’m headed to Nashville to make it!” Better off making your bones somewhere else where someone gives a crap! You seem like a good guy, wish you the very best buddy, once again, appreciate all that you’re doing here! I am following your new chapter to Florida, wish you the best!

I can tell you those agencies live and die on their contacts at the brands. It’s hard to bypass them entirely and some are better than others. The key is to work with the #1 person (owner/founder) which usually means footwork at conventions. I’ve had your same experience and it’s usually due to sloppy attention to detail from lower rung employees or last minute demands from the brand. it will test ones meddle for sure as the pay ranges is vast - from three to five figures - while their urgency can be the same level for both
