What a great property. A shame it’s abandoned and left sitting. Why is it the state of Florida has their priorities mixed up? This camp should still be operating full force. The politicians in Florida have no clue what they’re doing.

I’m from the general area and I swear Birmingham seems so much bigger in person than it seems on video. I mean it’s like 1/7th the size of the Atlanta metro, but it still seems big in person. Looks like a place of 50,000 people on video when it’s actually like 200,000

You should check out the Eureka Lock(complete, not operational, easiest to go by jon boat to the north end of the lock, GPS 29.376820, -81.900432) and Buckman Lock(operational, GPS 29.546131, -81.727723) are both part of the Cross Florida Barge Canal. There is also a Inglis Lock(GPS 29.024293, -82.616676) and Lake Rousseau Dam on the west coast that were both part of the CFBC project. The Inglis Lock did operated for many years, but fell into disrepair and there was not enough boat traffic to justify keeping it operational. If you look at Google satellite imagery you can see the path of the canal as a green arching strip(GPS 29.075434, -82.119341) south of Ocala where millions of trees were cut down. From there is make a dew west path into Dunnellon where another lock was to be built. There was also another lock planned east of Ocala, just south of SR 40 called the R.N. Bert Dosh Lock. Dosh was a big proponent of the CFBC as such the SR 40 bridge over the Ocklawaha was named the R.N. Bert Dosh Memorial Bridge.

I lived a couple miles from this place in 2014, I had just moved there. I sat on the bench by the waterfall after riding my bike I was very tired. 19 years old. Middle of summer. An old man who was very friendly like most people are around there sat down to talk to me. He had grey hair and sunglasses maybe late 60s or 70s. To make a long story short he tried to violate me. He exposed himself and I had to run away from him. Traumatic experience

When I was young in the 50's the structures were plainly visible driving on highway 301/441. They were built for the first barge canal started in the 1930's. Which brings up the question of why was a second canal started & never finished? If you want to explore another government debacle visit the Solid Rocket Propellant plant outside of Iuka, Miss. Billions were spent for equipment & buildings then abandoned when 95% complete. Why?

I live about 15 miles away from Sugarloaf, and used to ride around there often during the 25 years I was in the sport of bicycle racing. The Loaf might not be big, at around 1/2 mile or so of climbing, but it supposedly maxes out at 12% incline. I've gone as fast as 56 mph down it on my bicycle. Yeah, not for the faint of heart.
